Dear PotO fandom,

I have fondness for you. I really do. You're cute and wide-eyed and a little deluded, but I like you nonetheless. Maybe I don't like you all the time, but usually, we're pretty good friends.

But for the love of god, if you are going to write anything about a book/musical/whatever based on opera, research a little about classical voice. Some of the things you say about opera in general are just... boggling. And yeah, okay, maybe Leroux had a few problems himself (a twenty year old singing title roles? Are you shitting me?), but it doesn't mean that you shouldn't be somewhat knowledgeable about what you're writing. I mean, I saw a fic where Christine sings Carmen, for goodness sake.

Just, a little research? Please? And knowing if the opera was even written at the time the story took place is a good idea, too.

I'm not expecting you to be required to write a paper on the history of opera before you write fanfic. That's stupid. But you generally like this music anyway, so a remedial education wouldn't be too horrible, would it?

Love,
Me

PS: I know that Christine is supposed to be the perfect Marguerite, but can we use an opera other than Faust once in awhile? She'd make an adorable Gilda. Just sayin'.

O_o Carmen? Really?

Yes! Christine would be a great Gilda! (And Zerlina! And Pamina!)

Yeah, I don't even know. It was bad. I mean, okay, Micaela, sure, but Carmen? No.

Christine would be awesome in pretty much any Mozart lyric soprano role, really. And Susanna would be ironically appropriate. Especially considering, y'know, she's little and pretty much a baby vocally and she should only be doing that kind of stuff at that point in her life anyway. /issues I have with the story

This is true; people forget that Christine is super super young for an opera singer. I always classified her as the young pretty up-and-coming lyric soprano. (Though I do wonder at the fact that Leroux mentioned that she sang the Queen of the Night...)

Should I ask where you're reading this, or should I spare myself? ;D

Whoa, I don't remember that mention. Really? Uhg. I mean, I'm twenty and while it is a role I'll be singing in maybe fifteen years, I can't do it now. And Christine's a lyric coloratura soprano (or, well, that's what I tend to classify her as) and she wouldn't be singing the Queen anyway (or shouldn't - every lyric coloratura I've ever met has told me their voices don't really move fast enough up there, since that's where their fullness tends to be).

The Carmen one? God, it was forever ago - I'm pretty sure I found it on the Pit, though, so yeah.

My understanding is that some (many?) companies have sopranos sing Carmen these days -- not that it matters in this case, as it is a mezzo soprano role and would have been sung by such then, but the confusion is perhaps understandable. (Aside from it being a teribly popular show and therefore the reason that it was chosen. -_-)

It's just an unlikely role for Christine of all characters to sing. It's probably well within most sopranos' range, but still. :|

Yeah, but even then, it'll be a dramatic soprano or maybe a soprano getting on in years whose lower range has really darkened enough to pull off Carmen. Or a freak like Callas.

PotO = "Pirates of the Opera"? Oh, "Phantom of the Opera".

Although I'd like to see a musical about pirates at an opera house.

Oh, I'm glad it wasn't just me whose brain went along those lines.

Pirates of Penzance usually is produced by smaller or starting opera companies. I know my local opera company produced it a few times when they were starting out in the 80's.
