Dear Ryan Sohmer:

This is how you write a fantasy webcomic that actually treats its female characters like people and not vehicles for the male author's characters' desires. By the way, it also manages to be funny and epic without breaking its own rules and spiraling into meandering, Robert Jordan-like plots.

Considering dropping you like Dominic Deegan,
Keleri

His other comic, Least I Could Do, has featured rants on how women should starve themselves to look more fuckable to him his mary sue. The anorexic woman being berated then agreed with his mary sue.

That comic bugs the fuck out of me.

I'm still sort of 'did he really say that as a for their own good argument?'

Well you know it does take the word of a man for us women to know how to run our lives and take care of our bodies. I don't know what we'd do without them!

It's just a crazy coincidence that the final goal is his exact preference.

Ughhhhh. I had LICD blocked out as kind of a rampaging id situation, but the suck is bubbling up from the depths in LFG as well.

The couple times I glanced at that comic, it struck me as some awkward dude's idea of what a hilarious, suave womanizer's life would be like.

I guess I shouldn't saw "awkward", because awkward people can be perfectly nice. Rather, it looked like a Nice Guy™ writing himself as one of the "assholes" he envies.

I don't know why I did, but I'm... oddly glad that this was the worst I found.

God, I'm so desensitized.

I do believe the punchline for the entire comic should be read as "...that's not what your mom said last night!"

As if literal mother-fucking were the height of hilarity!

Ohh, Now I remember why Least I could Do sounded familiar. LICD is the one that keeps advertising on my webcomics and features nothing but boobs in the banner.

I'd say I'm good as long as there aren't any annoying comic relief characters or meandering side plots about trippy crap like imps that live in sand worms, but the art in that one is actually good gorgeous. I'm sold.

Oh, and while we're talking about awesome fantasy comics with real female characters, can I also recommend Darken? It's due to end sometime this year, but it was still totally worth the entire day I blew reading the archives.

I'm a little late to the party, but I recommend Digger. It's also supposed to be ending soon (I think?), but it's well worth the archive binge (And the art does get better).

Also, +1 to the down-thread Richard hate.

Ugh, it makes me sad in the midst of all the wallbanging, because once upon a time I loved LFG. I still check it, but now it's mostly in an "Are they out of that sandworm yet?" sort of way. WHY has Benny not been allowed to do anything awesome since she started fucking Cale out of the blue? The surprise pair-up didn't even bother me in and of itself, but now it's like that's all she's good for. And don't even get me started on Pella.

Thanks for the rec, though; I'd never seen this one before. Shall be reading it now!

So much this. Benny's dialogue's dwindled to almost nothing lately and while there was a point where I liked Richard I'm really wishing he'd go away for a while now.

No kidding. Even taking away the sandworm BS, lately it's been the "Oh Look, Richard's Doing Something Wacky With Body Parts" show. It used to be funny; now it's just dull.

And seriously, creators, I don't care that Benny and Cale are fucking. No really, I don't. Yes, okay, another shot of her waking up naked next to him. Yes, I get it. Fine. Just let her do something besides standing on the sidelines worrying about the stupid elf.

Blech. Apologies. I guess this has been bothering me more than I realized.

the "Oh Look, Richard's Doing Something Wacky With Body Parts" show

Admittedly I've never read the comic, but the way the fans seemed to worship Richard's ever-so-clever douchebaggery was a major sign to me the comic would head down that road, if it hadn't already. (The "dickrolled" comic that everyone seemed to think was the coolest thing ever being a huge example of this.)

No, I totally get it. I've been wondering where the Bloodrage-raised part of Benny's gotten off to for a while now.

From what little I've seen Richard always seemed like Black Mage from 8-bit Theater except not nearly as funny.

But then my experience with the comic what when I read a post I think on Fandom Wank about a fan who loved the doll she made a of LFG character a little too much.

My theory is Pella's there to fangirl for Richard and get her hands bloody with serious "no-name" atrocities so that Cale can remain "pure"wangsty. Killing one "innocent" boy (who isn't really there anyway) to restore a city? That's for the HERO to do (and angst about later)! Killing several innocent gnomes secretly in an unfunny way to change their mind to sign on with the aforementioned wangsty HERO? Eh, send in the Scrappy to take the hit and the brunt of the hate...

Yikes. I stopped reading LFG because it spiraled into "hey look, guys, Richard's doing... The same thing he always does, and the same thing Black Mage and many other characters have done before, but I guess it's supposed to be still funny!". Apparently, this was a good call.

I've stubbornly refused to read LFG, because when I decided to take up WoW RPing, I elected to play a fairly matter-of-factly horrible undead male warlock and not take things too seriously. Little did I know that by making this choice, I had apparently stepped into some kind of Webcomic Reference Vortex. By the time I figured out who "Richard" actually was, I was so sick of hearing about him that I vowed never to read the comic, ever. I guess I made the right decision.

Plus, Ryan Sohmer hit on my friend once in a convention dealer's room and it was kinda weird.
