I must say, I am truly astonished. I had no idea that so many people here were members of royalty. And what liberal monarchs too, to offer control of your kingdoms to so many subjects! It was as if the word ‘rein’ never existed! Perhaps the idiosyncrasies of my low-born, working class background are showing. How should a peasant as hideously revolting as me expect so many kings and queens to be familiar with the business of rearing horses or driving carriages? A monarchy of my own devising would be marvelously interesting indeed if I reigned in my horses as some of you people here seem to do. I imagine that is the reason no one can seem to use their keyboard properly. It must be very dark, wet and full of distressingly squashy noises where you are.

That vaguely reminds me of the weirdo I went to high school with who claimed to be related to the Prussian royal family, the Hohenzollerns, and so, he was the true heir to the German throne. He was also a Baron of Sealand, apparently.

I'd rather be Baron of Sea World. Then I would set Shamu free!

I APPROVE OF THIS IDEA.

But which Shamu? Aren't they, like, ten of them?

It feels like one great big inside joke that someone decided to make public, without giving any context.

I'm guessing it's the use of the word "reign" instead of "rein", which I'd venture seems to be a pervasive issue where the OP has been hanging out.

I was getting very frustrated with people misusing the words rein and reign. I've been seeing a lot of people on TVTropes use the phrase 'to give free reign' in the context of giving another person power over something, and I got so angry that no one there (or anywhere really) seems to understand that they are not using the word correctly that thought I would try to be funny with it. Okay?

What I'm getting out of this is that reign/rein is most tropers' homophone Kryptonite. Am I close?

Yes. Also, if I was going to reign in a horse, it would be very dark and wet. Get the joke?

You know, "reign" and "rein" is hardly the most annoying homophone abuse I've encountered there. I find a lot of the standard "you're/your" bullshit and it sets my teeth on edge.

I think it depends on your regional accent. I've encountered native english speakers who say them both the same way. Just like my husband says "pen" and "pin" the same way, whether he'll admit it or not. :p

Also, choke & joke.

I say rum & room the same. Accents are funny.

"Definately". I suspect that most "definitely/defiantly" confusions come from someone typing "definitely" with that insidious "a", and autocorrect changing it to "defiantly".

I confess, I have inordinate rages over reign/rein. Which is particularly stupid because people can actually explain why they think "free reign" is right, as opposed to your/you're, which is objectively wrong.
