So I was trying to find a source for something someone said about Elisa Maza from Gargoyles, and stumbled across this:

i just

i just can't even

Look I know Disney has its problems and that the princesses are not always as feminist as one could wish, but way to both be factually inaccurate and dismiss any positive messages, dude!

The one that makes me rage the most is Belle. I mean what in the fucking hell! Belle is a fucking badass nerd, she fights off wolves with sticks and teaches Beast how to read and tempers him because she simply does not put up with his bullshit, and all she does is use her sexuality? Fuck, her sexuality is her only asset? Where the hell do you even get that. DO YOU EVEN WATCH THIS MOVIE. Belle is probably the least sexual woman in the movie, she's too oblivious to social norms to rely on her boobs and prettiness to bend things in her favor. ADFDKJHSADJFH *RAGES*

The others are pretty bad, too, though! Like Belle, both Ariel and Jasmine want to find adventure and love, and both of them do, through defying social expectations and rebelling against their fathers. Again, "beauty" is the "only" asset Snow White has, despite being a loving, caring, and kind woman who brings some joy and order into the lives of others. Aurora's prince apparently "owns" her??? >:\

I... don't actually have anything to say about the Cinderella one, but that is because I haven't seen it since I was like seven.

I just. UGH.

ETA:
AIMfriend: Cinderella was a hard worker
AIMfriend: She kept that house clean
AIMfriend: and did all the chores
AIMfriend: and waited on her family hand and fucking foot
AIMfriend: That girl wasn't just pretty
AIMfriend: She knew how to do shit

Me: yeah.

AIMfriend: She took care of EVERYTHING

Me: BUT GOD FORBID A DUDE FIND HER BEAUTIFUL AND LIKE HER

AIMfriend: And rose about the nastiness and jealousy of her family

Me: AND GOD FORBID THIS MAKE HER HAPPY

AIMfriend: They tried to put her down and they COULDN'T
AIMfriend: WHAT IS THIS EVEN

Thank you for managing to sum up almost everything that bothers me about that fucking picture.

(I say almost because the other thing that bothers me? It's fucking UGLY.)

...they were all looking for a man?

Uh, no.

Though I've always hated peoples' evaluation of The Little Mermaid. The old version was so very positive after all. What with her dying in agony for daring to want to be different and all.

Oh man, favourite princesses... Jasmine and Belle are definitely high on that list (speaking of people whose roles are made far more positive in the Disney version than in the source material), and you know what? Mulan. Mulan was awesome.

Sticking with the movies I actually saw...

I always thought Beast loved Belle mostly for her compassion, not her sexuality. Plus she was very smart. I mean, the story is problematic as heck if you think about it enough, but I don't think her character is where the problem is.

And it looks like the OP of this is saying Jasmine causing trouble for her father was a negative thing? These girls just can't win.

(Believe it or not I don't think I saw any of the others, or if I did it was so long ago that I forgot.)

OMG, so much rage about that casual dismissal of Belle. There are plenty of problems with the movie (i.e. He's a beast! I can change him!) but Belle is pretty awesome.

Not to mention how off-base he is with Belle! Wooooooooow.

Ugh, I loathe when people try to make me feel bad (or at least imply) that I'm a horrible person for liking Disney properties, especially the princesses. There is nothing wrong with enjoying them for what they are, even if they can be problematic. Very little isn't problematic in one way or another, and the important thing is to recognize that there are problems rather than ignoring them.

I'd go further into "why is it wrong to enjoy going to the Magic Kingdom, even though I'm in my late twenties?", but that's probably a bit too off topic. (It's on my mind, though - my dad's taking me to Epcot for a day-trip in three weeks, and I'm super excited about it, because I love the Garden Festival there, which is the main reason I didn't choose MK for the trip, which is a delayed Christmas present, and also because I think my dad likes Epcot more anyway.)

Wasn't a large part of the plot from The Little Mermaid about Ariel's wonderful singing voice, and that was how Eric would identify her/how he was bespelled by Ursula?

I mean, I haven't seen it in years, but I thought that was a pretty big part and possibly because her I Want song is one of my favorite ever.

Seconding the WTF across the board for all of them, especially Belle and Jasmine. And heck, even the classic princesses are admirable in different ways... I like how the Princesses run the gamut in terms of personality types, everything from sweet to rebellious. I hate to see them all dismissed so completely.

Also boggling over the whole thing about Belle "saving a prince with her sexuality" thing. Besides the obvious point that everyone's brought up - SHE'S SMART! SHE'S A FIERCE GQMF! - am I the only one who finds it a bit problematic to boil the whole "saving him from the curse" thing down to sex? I mean, the curse is very clear: the Beast must learn to love her and earn her love in return (it's unclear whether platonic love counts, but for now we'll assume it's romantic). Since when does mutual love boil down ONLY to sex and sexuality? Yes, it *can* be a big part of a relationship (though not always), but... I dunno, the idea that "learning to respect and deeply care for a person and want to be with them" is somehow equivalent to "here, let me offer up my body to you" is somewhat repellent to me. I can't explain it.

Oh, and heck, the whole "saving a prince with sexuality" thing is bogus anyway, because Belle? HAD NO IDEA THAT WOULD HAPPEN. She didn't start throwing herself at the Beast to save him or cure him or whatever. She made a genuine confession of love that just happened to cure a curse she really had no idea about. But you know, god forbid she have actual real feelings for the Beast and want to express them.

Excuse me, I'll mop up after myself now.

... in addition to all the other WTFness... okay, I haven't watched Disney's Sleeping Beauty in a very long time. So I don't want to flat-out say this guy is factually wrong, but... there wasn't anything about betrothal connected with Beauty's situation. I really don't remember that figuring into things at all. She gets cursed out of spite on the part of Maleficent, yes -- because Maleficent was not invited to the child's christening when the other fairies were.

Am I forgetting somehow that Disney distorted the fairy-tale by NOT having her and all the rest of the kingdom sleep for like 100 years before a prince finally comes along who can release her (and the rest) from the spell? Because otherwise, even if this guy was correct and there was a betrothal involved before she pricked her finger and fell asleep... the prince who rescues her A HUNDRED YEARS LATER can't have been her original fiance.

(Linda Medley's prologue to "Castle Waiting" did a wonderful, sly commentary on the fairy-tale lack of realism of the princess being kissed awake and suddenly immediately falling for, and riding off with to marry, a total stranger. So I'm not saying that Sleeping Beauty doesn't have its problems as a story. I'm mostly just stuck on how it seems like this guy is talking about some version of the story that is really not the version in my memory.)

Disney just can't win can they? The princesses are supposed to be terrible anti-feminist role models, but if anyone mentions the source materials can be just as problematic all you'll probably get in return is a "Disney ruined fairy tales forever!" rant.

AND ANOTHER THING...

Did this person neglect to realize that a lot of the time, there are other female characters helping the princesses out? Is it still sexist if there are female characters saving other female characters?

I mean, the main agent of change in Cinderella's life was the Fairy Godmother; if anyone was doing the "saving", it was her. And while my memory of Sleeping Beauty is spotty, weren't the three (female) fairies helping Philip out, i.e. he could not have succeeded without them? There certainly seem to be plenty of Disney females who are getting off their butt and Doing Important Shit, even if it's not always the princesses.

Belle? SERIOUSLY? Next to Mulan she is my favorite Disney female because she has such courage and strength and faces things that many of the men in the movies can't or won't. What she may lack in physical strength she makes up for in quick wit and out-thinking her opponent. I'm not saying she's perfect but I will ALWAYS adore this song -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeDPySP4nIw

Not to be corny but I'd always listen to that song when I was little and feeling down over my little city life where I felt like an outsider.

Ehhh, am I the only one who gets super squicked by Ariel giving up her voice to win a man? I mean, I am very aware that the original Andersen tale is far worse, but that's not actually saying much.

On the other hand, I know I'm not the only one who gets squicked by the way Snow White's story gets resolved.

Which is to say: I'd like to see a version of that graphic that makes legitimate critiques.

So much fail on the image makers fault that I am just going to drop this:

The Second City Network's "Advice for Young Girls from a Cartoon Princess which address's the problems with Disney better.

Someone posted this on Tumblr about a year ago and had a really cool response to it. Unfortunately, it's somewhere in the mire that is my "liked" posts.

You know, I've got my own issues with the Disney princesses (in particular Belle, actually, but relating to her entire song about wanting to see the world and go on adventures and how she sort of... gave up on that), but... my biggest problem here is Ariel, because she didn't get her legs for a man. He was tangentially related to start. She just wanted to be on land, to live like a human — and having to find live was a part of the price she paid, not what she was paying for. And the other part of the price was losing the voice she loved to sing with. Ursula was just trying to go for the massively improbable. (I'm surprised, though, that there's nothing mentioned about her being fifteen.)

Although, re: Belle, I don't exactly recall her seducing the Beast. I mean, oh yeah, snowball fights, SO SEXY. I'd assume he's referring to the ballroom scene, which was a culmination of everything that came before, not the turning point itself.
