So I was trying to find a source for something someone said about Elisa Maza from Gargoyles, and stumbled across this:

i just

i just can't even

Look I know Disney has its problems and that the princesses are not always as feminist as one could wish, but way to both be factually inaccurate and dismiss any positive messages, dude!

The one that makes me rage the most is Belle. I mean what in the fucking hell! Belle is a fucking badass nerd, she fights off wolves with sticks and teaches Beast how to read and tempers him because she simply does not put up with his bullshit, and all she does is use her sexuality? Fuck, her sexuality is her only asset? Where the hell do you even get that. DO YOU EVEN WATCH THIS MOVIE. Belle is probably the least sexual woman in the movie, she's too oblivious to social norms to rely on her boobs and prettiness to bend things in her favor. ADFDKJHSADJFH *RAGES*

The others are pretty bad, too, though! Like Belle, both Ariel and Jasmine want to find adventure and love, and both of them do, through defying social expectations and rebelling against their fathers. Again, "beauty" is the "only" asset Snow White has, despite being a loving, caring, and kind woman who brings some joy and order into the lives of others. Aurora's prince apparently "owns" her??? >:\

I... don't actually have anything to say about the Cinderella one, but that is because I haven't seen it since I was like seven.

I just. UGH.

ETA:
AIMfriend: Cinderella was a hard worker
AIMfriend: She kept that house clean
AIMfriend: and did all the chores
AIMfriend: and waited on her family hand and fucking foot
AIMfriend: That girl wasn't just pretty
AIMfriend: She knew how to do shit

Me: yeah.

AIMfriend: She took care of EVERYTHING

Me: BUT GOD FORBID A DUDE FIND HER BEAUTIFUL AND LIKE HER

AIMfriend: And rose about the nastiness and jealousy of her family

Me: AND GOD FORBID THIS MAKE HER HAPPY

AIMfriend: They tried to put her down and they COULDN'T
AIMfriend: WHAT IS THIS EVEN

My mom's been kicking around the idea of a family reunion at Disney World for next year, since we haven't had a family vacation in quite some time (plus we've got cousins that recently moved down there). I'm kicking thirty in the ass and squeed like a 5 year old. To give you an idea of how long ago it's been since I was there, Tower of Terror hadn't even opened yet, and Tomorrowland hadn't been revamped.

I was always a huge Epcot fangirl just because I'm such a fucking nerd (I was gleeful for The Land, FFS. The boat ride in which you learn about agriculture tech!). But it's weird because it really feels like two parks smooshed together--as a kid, I was kinda bored with the "round the world" half, except for one of the Scandinavian ones that had the cracktastic boat ride with the trolls and shit. My fondest memory otherwise was the smoking hot foreign exchange student who worked the register in one of the Morocco giftshops, that stopped my 14 year old brain in its tracks. Otherwise, it was kinda meh. I'd imagine I'd appreciate it a lot more now that I'm older.

tl;dr: TEACUPS 4 LYFE, BITCHES!

We're lifelong Floridians, and our way of spending money when I was little was going to WDW and camping about once a month or every other month for the weekend (we didn't buy fancy clothes or name brand things - we went for generic groceries, &c because my parents were like "okay, we can spend $50 on cable tv OR we can use it for a night at Fort Wilderness" and frankly, the weekend away was worth it) - we rarely actually went to the parks, except for a few years when my dad got good bonuses and was able to get us annual passes. ANYWAY when I was thirteen, my parents separated and we no longer had the ability to go much - I've been maybe 6 times in the last thirteen years, compared to at least a hundred times in my first 13 years (the first time I went, I was six months old, with my uncle! - I've never been able to find out why he and his girlfriend felt like taking a six month infant to Disney, but they did).

So I guess you could say that I think very fondly of it, and the not going much ever after going all the time probably makes me more nostalgic than anything? But instead of being overwhelmed by the ~magic~ the last couple times I've gone, it's been really cool to look at it all meta-like and admire the Imagineers' work and how well they create atmosphere and stories and stuff.

Long story short, that's a lot of the appeal of Epcot's World Showcase, I think, the attention to detail and the stories told in the architecture and art design. The sciencey side has been given a lot more theming without as strong of a science feel, because they were losing visitors to the other parks, and it was too much of a Grown Up place, or nonsense like that (I've always adored Epcot myself).

But also, if you go to Epcot now, you should TOTALLY go during the Food & Wine Festival in the autumn or the Flower & Garden Festival during the spring. The Food & Wine one has these amazing booths all over the World Showcase with different food to try (though you have to pay at each one, which is expensive, iirc), and it's soooo much more fun as an adult who can legally drink the alcohol. The Garden Festival is amazing because they put so much work and creativity into plant sculpture and displays, and it's just fucking beautiful (one year I went there was a butterfly garden and it was the coolest thing ever). That's why I'm going in 3 weeks - for the plants. I'm also hoping to get some cool photos to use as inspiration in my paintings...
