Female lead? WAH, THAT'S BULLYING THE MALE LEAD.
Dear Fringe Fan-Person,

So you love Joshua Jackson, that's great. Really, that's just dandy, I'm happy for you but do you have to express that love for him by constantly bashing Anna Torv? Is it really necessary to big up Joshua Jackson by calling her a bad actress, complaining about her "ugly face," and going on and on about how stupid she is?

Yes, the fandom focuses on her a lot but that doesn't mean we "hate," Josh, it doesn't mean we ignore or devalue him and it certainly doesn't mean we're "bullying" him (bullying? Really? Most of us have never met the guy). Having a woman in the traditional action hero role and having her save the guy from time to time doesn't mean that his character is worthless (how dare that uppity woman have agency and take charge, I mean, how DARE she?).

If we do focus on her, there's a good reason for that: SHE'S THE MAIN FUCKING CHARACTER. The others are important, of course, but at its core, this is HER hero's journey, it's about HER discovering the secrets of her past, HER coming into her power, HER saving the world. If you can't handle the idea of a show with a female lead, kindly bugger off and focus your attention on one of the other kabillion shows or movies out there that focus on the menz.

No love,
Me and probably just about everyone else who follows the Anna Torv tag on tumblr.

Torv really is pushed to her limits as an actress, too. She's had to play what, three different characters now? And then one of the characters pretended to be another of them? And then there's the "Bellivia" thing...

(Whereas Jackson, for all that I like his portrayal of Peter, has been playing only the one version of him. The only person who comes close to having a job as hard as Torv is John Noble, and both of them deserve Emmy nominations at least, that they won't get.)

Yeah, there's blue-verse Olivia, Red-verse Olivia, Red-Verse Olivia pretending to be blue-verse Olivia, Bellivia and now Orange-verse Olivia. I'll admit, I found her quite stiff in season 1 but I've since realised that was a very deliberate choice on her part (blue-verse Liv is very stiff, staid and closed-off). She consistently blown my mind since then.

They do whine about John Noble but not nearly as much as they do about Anna. They seem to think the Josh is ignored "because he never got to play a double." Or something. I don't know. I think his character is necessary (he's essentially the straight man to all the craziness that goes on) but Torv and Noble have the showier and yes, more difficult roles.

I get the impression that they hate everyone who isn't Josh, which really makes me wish they'd just piss off and watch repeats of Dawson's Creek or something.

Well, everybody ripped on her stiffness in S1. And then realized that it was, in fact, acting, not lack-of-acting, and most of the complaints shut up.

I totally assumed that the carefully-controlled Olivia was excellent acting by Anna. And then Redverse Olivia sauntered onto the screen and I was all *FISTPUNCH* OH YEAH.

Uh-may-zing acting.
