Dear yaoi fen,

Don't be so fucking self-righteous. You're writing porn, not kickstarting a social movement or singlehandedly winning worldwide marriage rights for homosexuals. Stop accusing people of homophobia/blindness to what is OMG SO OBVIOUS/kicking puppies in their free time just because they don't like the same kind of porn you do.

Dear anti-yaoi fen,

Don't be so fucking self-righteous. It's fine to not like yaoi; what isn't fine is when you direct HUR HUR HUR GAYS SUCK AND UR STOOPID comments at those who do. And stop whining about persecution. You are not being persecuted. Persecution is when you're jailed for saying what you believe. Persecution is when the Fannish Inquisition tracks you down, goes to your house, and trashes your computer. Being insulted by random people on the Internet is not persecution. Yes, there are raving, idiotic yaoi fen. There are also raving, idiotic anti-yaoi fen. In fact, I think you might be one of them.

Just die. All of you.

But what are your thoughts on yaoi?

I'd like it a lot better if it weren't for its rabid fans and detractors. It's like Jesus, in a way.

And soon, Anne Rice shall see the light, and write an entire book about her thoughts on Yaoi.

The day the yaoi fans and the anti-yaoi fans stop catfighting will be the day hell freezes over and pigs learn how to dance.

I must ask, what is a "fen"?

I believe it's a bizarre pluralisation of "fan", used in place of "fans" for reasons passing understanding. Perhaps a false Latin derivation, like the ever-bizarre "octopi"? Dunno.

In any case, it's also used in the domain name, as in "journalfen", though I confess I've never heard it used outside the LJ/JF circles.

It derives from old science fiction (literary, not TV/movies) fandom. I can't remember the actual etymology at the moment, though.

I don't know *why* it came about, but I assumed it was like plural of man = men.

I have a friend who insists the plural of "penis" is "penii." I love her but it's really hard not to punch her in the face when she says or writes it.

See, I use "penii" facetiously, but, then, I have this thing where I understand that it's not correct and, y'know, a joke. And all.

The plural of "scrotum" really is "scrota" though, because I used to work with a guy whose last name spellchecked to "scrota" and I have never been able to stop giggling about it. *is twelve*

Yeah, as a joke it's okay. I pretend the plural of "anus" is "anii" as a joke (except watch someone come along and tell me that actually is the plural) because it sounds funny and, like you, I have the sense of humor of a 12 year old or a frat boy. But she really does believe the plural of "penis" is "penii" and that's just sad.

I personally like "mongii" as the plural for "mongoose."

'Cuz that's just wrong in any language.

Well, not everyone's for yaoi or anti-yaoi, so no. Though I do have a very disturbing mental soundbite of George Bush saying, "You're either for the yaoi or against the yaoi."

Very, very disturbing.

I know, I was just being silly. My own thoughts on yaoi are (a)that it's a perfectly harmless and fun way to spend one's time, but not that exciting and (b)that it looks like a most awkward word to pronounce.

I suspect George Bush's thoughts on yaoi are less positive, though.

He'd never say that. He'd get tripped up on pronouncing the first yaoi, shrug helplessly in that way that he thinks makes him look charming and humble and then exit stage left.
