Hey! You! Yes you, over there!

You are not special or being cool just because you say "ZOMG BBM is stupid but I haven't seen it because it's like a love story and I hate Westerns and everyone just likes it because it has teh gay anyway so there".

You are being a fuckhat. Please take note of this and do something about it. Like actually go see the movie before you start insulting fans, kthnx.

Man, if I sat around insulting every single work of fiction that I had no desire to experience, I'd never log off the internet. ...Not that I ever log off the internet, anyway.

Okay, this has always bugged me, and I figure it's as good an opening as any, but what is that in your icon? I always think it's some sort of weird glowing pine-leaf, but I'm sure I'm entirely wrong.

I've bitched about the movie, but mainly because I indicated that I had no desire to see it and promptly had people descend on me and say "But it'll be good for you!"

So, uh. I think that insulting the fans=just fine, when any indication that someone doesn't want to see the movie apparently makes them a stupid idiot who doesn't know their own likes or dislikes.

Word. It's Firefly/Serenity all over again. I finally did see BBM but I was underwhelmed and I know it partly had to do with my entire flist shoving "this is the best movie in cinematic history!" down my throat.

Exactly. I read the short story, which convinced me that I don't want to see the movie. Being told that I am denying myself the best movie love story ever (Me: "Did you just dismiss Casablanca like that? Bite me.") and that it will enlighten me will just make me want to slap you.

Telling me that it's because I'm a homophobe or a spoilt little post-Stonewall dyke who doesn't understand how much it sucked to be gay in the mid-20th century has, in fact, resulted in there being one RL person I don't talk to any more.

But I don't insult the fans unless they do that kind of crap.

What I really love is people calling my queer cred into question because I haven't seen it. Someone in a conversation we were having said something like "it's our movie." Um, no, not really. Most of the gay people I know don't need to be told that it's difficult to be gay and that it was even worse in the 60s and 70s, that being gay means making tough choices and that hiding your love away leads to Bad Things.

If anyone NEEDS to see this movie because it's "good for them" it's the average American who doesn't understand how damaging homophobia can be because they've never really thought about it. Those of us who have actually been there or have friends who have already know it. [info]darkrosetiger and I didn't see Crash either, because, um...we know that racism is alive and well and living in LA.

I'm not spending what little money I have for a movie that's a genre I don't like, starring guys I don't find interesting, telling a story I don't need to be told just because it's about teh gay. And frankly, anyone who insists that I'm letting the team down because I didn't see it is insulting me, so yeah, let's not get into a game of who's being more insulting.

I hate the "it'll be GOOD for you!!" logic applied to entertainment. :P "But you'll never grow as a person if you watch Sailor Moon all the time instead of reading Pulp Comics!!!". Right, cause personal growth has everything to do with the manga you read.

As I told my friend, I liked the movie, really. I just have no desire to watch it ever again.

I do agree with you that it is frustrating to see people bashing BBM right and left just to swim against the tide, so to speak, or because they'd be different than the adoring masses. Then again, it is equally frustrating to have a movie thrown at you at all time, flooding your flist along with mediocre icons that seem suddenly to be on every journal. People, glorify the movie all you like, just don't shove it down my throat.

I must say that the more I hear that movie discussed, the less I actually want to see it. I don't particularly enjoy any of the aspects of the story (and teh ghey is not an aspect of the story, but just another attribute of the characters), and frankly, I'm just tired of hearing about it and how great everybody thought it was due to the fact that there were pretty boys having sex.

So, if anyone doesn't want to give a damn about the movie, it's their right. It's just a movie, after all--hardly even the greatest one in its genre. There are movies that deal with homosexuality better, some that tell far better love stories (and in better ways), and yes, better westerns. These are all givens. After all, in six months, we will have moved on to the next topic and damn near forgotten this film.

That's peachy. But considering it doesn't fit well into any of those genres, what's the point of this argument, again? Sorry, but the only time Ang Lee ever made a real genre film was The Hulk, so trying to slap genre arguments onto BBM really doesn't work well and it's one of the things that's really starting to piss me off in these discussions (and funnily enough, one of the things that made me write this rant).

I'm not saying it's not your right to see the movie if you don't like anything factual you've heard about it (general plot, filming style, directing style, tearjerkers, whatever), but really, if you had seen it, you'd know, well, it's not a genre film, even if the overpaid critics are trying to pin it as some sort of stupid subversion of one. Just saying.

sorry BBM, boredom coma.

I have zero interest in seeing a film with boys I don't care about, in a "tragic romance" which I don't care about.

If I want good "hard to be gay back in the day" tragic romance, I'll wath The Sweeney... At least they can act and have a good story line.

Really Ang Lee was trying to remake the Butterfly Lovers only with cowboys instead of Tang Dynasty students... No thanks.

"ZOMG BBM is stupid but I haven't seen it because it's like a love story and I hate Westerns and everyone just likes it because it has teh gay anyway so there".

You know, this whole "I have the right to tell you it's stupid, even though you've seen it and I haven't" thing irks me anytime it comes up (and it seems to with great regularity, even before the Great BBM Wars of 2006).

I'm one of those people who loved this movie so hard I told people it "broke my traditional five-star ratings system." Then I made an ill-advised post about its greatness and my opinions about people not going to see it, which I regret at this point now that I'm a bit more levelheaded. Of course I don't mind if people give the movie a miss, and whether they do so out of political or artistic or fiscal reasons or because they heard a rumor the main characters are placed by mimes or whatever, it's none of my business.

However, I will still never understand the idea of insulting something, or someone who likes something, when you aren't familiar with "it" yourself. I don't rabidly recommend things I haven't experienced; neither would I decry something I hadn't actually laid eyes on. Have an opinion on it? Sure. But not a sweeping proclamation of one like "it's the greatest movie ever" or "it sucks." That's a little hard to figure without laying eyes on it myself. IMO, anyway.
