Dear People with Commenting Issues,

I'm afraid I need to clarify a couple of points you don't seem to be understanding.

First, commenting isn't mandatory, if you don't have anything to say, you can choose not to. Yes, authors like feedback and all that, but I'm speaking about general post and the fact that nobody gives a damn about your thoughts on yaoi. When you post something on the net, there will be people reading what you wrote, please keep that in mind. Do whatever you want in your own journal, but some relevancy on your comments is appreciated, thanks.

Second, commenting on a BNF's LJ or a big community with "first", "first page!" or some variation thereof doesn't make you cool. It makes you look like a stupid moron with no life that spends their entire day refreshing their flist just to post stupid stuff like that. Sometimes you make me feel like I missed a memo where LJ news announced they were going to give out gifts for the people who do that. Really, what's the point? People [usually] write because they have something to say; you're supposed to read the post, not advertise your stupidity about thinking that getting there first deserves a prize. I hardly doubt anybody wants to know how obsessed you are about reading somebody else's LJ that you need to express your joy at being able to hit the "comment" link before anybody else does.

And please, if somebody beat you to it, you can delete the comment, you know? Because it's even more pathetic when you miss [and that's saying a lot].

No love,
Bolboreta.

This rant originated from the fact that sometimes I wished I were wrong. Also, my apologies if I really killed the English language, it wasn't intentional.

Seconded.

I hate that "first post" stuff. Goes right up there with people who sign posts with, "I have nothing to say, but I wanted to leave my name on a legendary post!"

I must say I've never so unlucky to come across something like that (I'd have to sit on my hands not to wank on it, that's for sure). It's like both my points combined, a true nightmare! I mean, I've seen post that translated to simply that, but do people actually have the nerve to write it? *is starting to think she's way too self-conscious*

Check out journals for "famous" people like the girl in Alaska that murdered her mother and things like that. You'll see several comments along the lines of, "Just wanted to sign in a legendary post/journal/whatever!" like they really believe they're carving their name in the Alamo, not just leaving a comment in some shitty journal where some tech could erase everything in five seconds.

One example. Too lazy to go find more.

And, yeah. There were a ton of those in Rachelle Waterman's journal, but those posts were all deleted.

Oh my God, yes. I hate that with a passion. It's seriously like the stupidest thing ever and makes me ragey every time I see it.

So much word. Especially with the commenting thing... people do that every post on Pottersues, and she actually gives a prize to the person with the most first comments every 100 fics (or used to; don't know if the new gal will or not).

Really? I suspected something like that; I wasn't completely kidding about the memo thing.

Yeah, I think she found it amusing that people would take such pride in being first.

Huh, when I used to follow it (...two years ago, wow), she would delete posts that only said "first comment."

She did/does (don't know if the new gal does), but the person who gets first comment will usually reply to themself with OMG I G0T FIRST COMMENT!1!!1 Usually it's several people vying for it at once, and some of them will append "First comment?" to the end of their post, then be all disappointed if they don't get it. Some folk also go "OMG YAY FIRST PAGE!1!!" in their comments. It's actually not that hard to get first page anymore, as much less people comment than they used to.

Pottersues II just isn't that funny. :(

Rather bland, isn't she? :/ I suspect even if the transition hadn't been announced that I would've found myself going "what happened to the old Pottersues!?"

... Because really.

And this is TOTALLY RELEVANT to the complaints of first post OK? Because I don't know why you'd even consider wanting to bother, these days.

Yeah, she doesn't make many snarky comments; the old Pottersues would take the time to outline WHY the fic is bad in a snarktastic way. The new one seems more inclined to let the fics speak for themselves, which is a little bland.

OMG FIRST COMMENT??

I'm right with you. The first time I saw it (reading the shoebox project, I think) I thought 'uhm, why?'. I guess that's one of the mysteries I'll never be able to solve. And the variation (omg top ten? first page?) it's even worse, if that's possible.

Sometimes, I wish I could be a BNF so I could sit and delete all those FIRST COMMENTS as they come in, and make everyone think they're first and...yeah.

Why can't people comment with something worthwhile instead of getting my hopes up that there's some sort of interesting discussion going on?

[info]bolboreta

Exactly. I don't think I'd even enjoy deleting the posts... I'd be way to angry about getting them on my email to even do that!

You could also screen them all, so that each person believes they're first, then unscreen all at once.

God yes. See also: 'OMG, I luv ur icon but I dunno what teh answer to ur question iz!' in font finding communities. It's such a common comment that I've never asked a question in the community because I'm sure I'll never get an answer.
