No, not every slash fan is a crazed teenybopper writing about manginas; the reason you find that sort of fic so often is you go looking for it.

Yes, most of us realise that slash fic is just that. Fiction. We know it's not real. it's words on a page. Screaming that Kirk/Spock, Alucard/Richter, OT3s and tentacle pr0n demean and somehow condemn and insult IRL gay men is retarded.

P.P.S. Yes, I am aware that there are expections to all this here. Fort example, some slashfic is written in such a way that it's extremely lousy to the men involved. If the writer has an agenda they will push it. But not every slash fan is a nutter with an agenda. Most of us, I think, are pretty decent. it's just the insane douchedribbles are SO LOUD.

If they're really all that concerned about the perception and/or degradation of gay relationships, there's a lot more relevant things to get angry about than slash. Like the fact that gay couples can't get married, for example. Or the fact that so many people think that they're going to burn in hell for all eternity. Or the fact that there are people who think that gay people are responsible for everything from Hurrican Katrina to the war in Iraq. Or...

Yeah. Slash fen are pretty low on the oppressing gay people scale.

The thing I always want to know about this and can never get a straight answer from the wankers about is what if you're queer and you write slash? When I write Ashley/Sydney do I oppress myself? Or does it only count as degrading myself when I stick Merlose in there, since I'm bi?

Just to reinforce the point, it isn't only slash fans who have agendas. There's an awful (and I use the word advisedly) lot of fiction about dedicated to "proving" that such-and-such a character SO ISN'T GAY. When people let their emotions get the better of them in either direction, its the fiction that suffers.
