Dear Friend/Fellow Fanfiction-writer,

Listen. I know you like my works of fanfiction. I know I should be flattered that you consider me to be "well-read, with an encyclopedia for a brain."

That said - no, I will not research or write your fic for you. There are two excellent tools I would like to refer you to in this case; Google and Wikipedia. They are your friends. They have served me quite well in the past, and I am certain that they can also be of great help to you as well.

No, arguments of "BUT UR SO WELL-READ AND SMRT!" won't float here. See, I do not have one thing that you really need in this case, which is a working knowledge of the French Language. No matter how SMRT you think I am, I have not yet had the opportunity to learn French, and I doubt I shall do so just to help you write your fanfiction. I'd like to for my own personal edification, but I'll get around to it in my own time, thank you very much. SMRT =/= polyglot. Sorry.

Another point that I would like to make is that a lot of the knowledge that you consider to be so encyclopedia-like in nature has come from researching my own fanfic. There were times when I needed to know just what phosphorus ammunition rounds do to the human body (it isn't pretty) or what the major constellations were called in ancient Mesopotamia. Again, I'd like to refer you to Wikipedia and Google. It's where I learned all this stuff.

I'm not trying to be a douche. This isn't information that I'm "withholding from you just to be mean." I really don't know French. I also think you're mistaking actual work, time, and effort for actual intelligence. Trust me, I could really use an upgrade in that respect.

It's hypocritical of you to think your ships are better or closer to canon than hers just because it's slash. Sure, the male characters have more interaction with each other (it's a SHONEN MANGA after all), but please, implying your pairings are more "correct"? Haha, no.

No, I don't care if my favorite character/the one I write best is available and wanted. I'm quite happy in the one I'm in and am really not interested in any others, thanks.

Look, I get the whole 'sheltered' thing. I do! I was there once too. Slash was definitely not my thing in those tender teenage years, but thankfully the internet was kind enough to let me mellow to the point where I no longer give a damn.

I was warned you had a problem with slash, yaoi, whatever, and hey, that's understandable being sheltered and all. Color me surprised when getting to know you, I find you love KH yaoi and all sorts of shonen-ai a lot. Oookay, that's not what I was expecting, but whatever. Maybe you got over it before you met me?

You know, it's A-OK to disagree with me. Really, it's fine! I don't mind at all, I assure you, and I actually consider myself a fairly decent person when it comes to arguments. I'll admit that in the comment you disagreed with, I got a bit carried away, but it was in the heat of the moment and I was hardly the only one getting caught up in it.

But you couldn't say it in public?

You had to track down my personal LJ, which I admit isn't that hard to find, it's true. And instead of leaving me a comment on this site -- where I made the one you disagreed with -- you sent me a PM on LJ?

Is that productive?

I understand the need to blow off some steam, and I really do understand that you disagreed with me. But this is more than disagreement. It's outright childish name-calling, and you didn't even have the spine to do it where I made the original comment, or even where anyone could see your disagreement? I have to wonder if any of the other commenters on that post got the same treatment, or if I got singled out for some reason beyond my imagination.

By the way, I don't even like children, and I never called anyone a "freetard." You could at least stop putting words in my mouth, if you're going to disagree with me even privately.

I'm sorry you feel so persecuted in your opinion that you can't disagree with me in public, but really, telling me to "go moo some more" and acting like I don't know children can be little jerks is actually quite uncalled for, thanks.

We were all sad when Gary Gygax died. Everyone knew his name, and he pretty much started our hobby, so we all owe him an enormous debt.

That said, where the HELL do you get off, bashing editions of D&D you don't like by claiming "Gary would have hated it"? Yes, "Gary", as though you were his fucking friend.

Of COURSE 'Gary' would have hated it. Of COURSE he hated new versions of D&D. He made D&D his way the first time, and he is damn well entitled to his opinion of anything that came after. I am also entitled to mine, which are as follows:

1) I like the new version of D&D.
2) You are a mouthbreathing assclown for name-dropping a recently dead guy in order to score a few cheap points in a retarded edition war on the internet, on a forum where some of the man's real-life friends post.

This KEEPS FUCKING HAPPENING and I am FUCKING SICK OF IT.

I have this slightly weird hobby of going to fanfiction.net and reading writer profiles. Generally, I'm mildly amused with occasional moments of being pleasantly surprised when I find out that someone else likes one of my rare fandoms. However, this last time I came across something in a profile that makes me want to reach through the screen and strangle someone:

"I wish people would stop writing gay/ lesbo stories on FanFiction. Jeez, if you hate them enough to make them gay don't watch/read it at all then!"

There are so many things wrong with that statement, I don't even know where to begin. Right now I'm too enraged to go into all the specific wrong.

Look, I know it's really hard to come up with good songs to make vids to, most of the good ones have been done to death already. And hell, sometimes a song just really fits a show and you've gotta use it. It's very possible to make a good vid out of a song other people have made vids with.

But for the love of Ceiling Cat, I am demanding you cease and desist with the Mortal Kombat vids. Please. I don't care if it's the original version, the Utah Saints mix, or the MK3/4 one that named damn near all of MK's 40 billion characters, just give it a fucking rest already. It is neither cute, nor original, and I've seen maybe three in about 10 years that didn't suck. One was a Sailor Moon vid from around 1996. There are many other catchy, fast-paced techno songs that would be awesome to use for an action video. Please use them.

This also goes for anything involving Evanescence. I'm looking at you, Final Fantasy fandom. SHIT IS NOT DEEP, sry2say. Please go on Pandora.com and expand your musical palette.

The defense of "It's just something we do around friends!" when you say something bigoted doesn't work WHEN YOU'RE IN PUBLIC! Yes, fancy that, the Internet is public. The presence of your friend doesn't suddenly make it a joke among friends.

Nor does the defense of "I wouldn't say it in front of [oppressed minority]!" work when you have no way of knowing if those screen names are black, gay women who just finished converting to Judaism, or idiot frat boys like yourself.

And finally, using bigoted words in public is not being fun and "friendly". There is nothing friendly about potentially offending people during their fun time.

Hey there, opinionated person in my fandom. Opinions are great. I have them, you have them, lots of people have them. The neato-torpedo thing about forums is that we can discuss our opinions and get to see how everyone thinks. It's all very shiny in a perfect internet world.

Opinions are not right or wrong; there are just varying degrees on a spectrum spanning from well informed to ignorant bliss. People are going to disagree with you and that's okay. That's what makes the discussion interesting. And an interesting discussion hinges on presenting your opinions in a respectful manner.

This last part, I suggest you duct tape yourself to as you don't seem to understand it.

You present your opinions in an incredibly condescending way, your replies to anyone disagreeing with you are scathing, rude, demanding, condescending, snotty, and barely within the etiquette rules of the board, and if someone dares to be as rude to you as you are them, you call it trolling. There is no way I could possibly agree with you publicly because I don't want to be a douche by association.

Your post count doesn't impress me. It just means you're a very prolific twat. And your hate on the show doesn't make you edgy. It makes you look like a bitter twat with too much time on your hands.

For the love of everyone you come in contact with, take up another hobby. I hear juggling chainsaws is very popular.

I realize the Transformers fandom is not the most enlightened of groups but this sort of thing just pisses me off. Putting aside the fact that The Gay is not allowed in the TF:Mosaic project (with, apparently, exceptions made for humor), I find it rather insulting to continually insinuate that the sudden discovery that the object of your lusts is actually a male is horrifying. Double points if they turn around and start hitting on you. It's an incredibly stale joke that has overtones of homophobia that I'm just not comfortable with. Note the comments below the comic as well--this situation is regarded as awkward or just flat-out wrong. There's even a few "robots in disguise indeed!" crossdresser jokes thrown in for good measure.

Does that mean the writer and artist of this comic are homophobic? Not necessarily. They're just going with a lowest common denominator joke, much like like the guy who did the Erector penis size joke last week. But stop for a moment and think about exactly why it's funny. You have one or more males participating in a manly heterosexual activity, lusting over or trying to attract a female (the stereotypical catcalling "headlights or gtfo" thing is canon for the Constructicons, btw, although so far they've only hit on inanimate cars). Then the "trap" is exposed, revealing that the male(s) have actually been participating in a homosexual activity by catcalling another male. This is found to be hilarious to the audience and humiliating to the male(s) involved. I'm not sure if it even works the same way for a reverse-trap, a female mistaken for a male by another female, but if it is the degree of humiliation is far less.

...am I overreacting here or is this legitimate? I realize the fandom's male dominated but they don't have to be dickheads about this.

I made sure the guns were powering up and stuff. The Stunticons were just supposed to scare them off, THATS IT. There is no reading into this, no hidden message, it is what you see.

Yes, well, while I see an alternative explanation that the Stunticon's violent approach could have been the trigger as opposed to their revealed gender, Mr. van Reyk seems to indicate otherwise. I honestly can't be arsed to go in and argue with them, but I'd say the intent on the writer's part is pretty obvious. Accidental gay is terrifying.

Dear RPG co-mod,

Look. This is a single fandom game. That application that I begged you all night to let me reject? That was for the main character of the series. It doesn't matter that you thought the player was nice. It doesn't matter that you're paranoid about not getting enough applicants in our middling-sized fandom. If you accept mediocre players, especially for the main character, you are going to get a mediocre game. If you accept players who are given several hours of 1-on-1 mod assistance in revising their writing but still don't understand, say, how to use apostrophes or commas or how to capitalize properly, you will end up with a game full of players who can't write.

I don't have the patience to hold people's hands every time they post, and you might think you do, but as the more experienced mod, please take my advice that you'll get sick of it faster than you think. This is what the application process is for -- to make sure that we and our playerbase, who don't want to have to deal with mediocre characters either, are all getting someone we can live with. If I'd known that with every single application we were going to have a night of drama in which you befriended the applicant and decided their app was the Only Possible App For That Character, I never would have suggested we start this game together. Yes, our fandom is not that big, but this is the main character. Have patience. Every single character slot doesn't have to be filled in a night -- it might take a week or two weeks or even two months, but someone else will come along, and I promise you, they will be better.

I am having a hard time discussing the fandoms I like because I do, admittedly, have a tendency to get defensive and hostile. (I am a autistic male in his early twenties.) but, when you get attacked and flamed on discussion forums like I do, it's some
times hard to deal with. I am a fan of Mecha, some Real Robot, but mostly of the Super Robot variety.

I have been growing very upset over the mediocrity of Gundam 00 and Macross Frontier. (one, I am of the opinion that Gundam hasn't been good since X, and that Macross has went to a dark and scary place since Zero.) I even sometimes go as far to say the only good Real shows anymore are Patlabor and VOTOMS, despite them being somewhat innaccessable, obscure, and not for everyne.

I don't know WHAT it is about Mainstream appeal, I'm just scared away by things like overly exessive fanservice, and things being different from my norm. In addition to a shitstorm that started because I have been very vocal about me feeling like Gundam 00 is no better than Wing, in addition to other thigns like poorly done Mobile Suit design. I just hate the characters. Setsuna F. Seiei is just Heero Yuy 2.0, Lockon Stratos, being the onyl character I could stand. Keep I mind I also hate Wing and SEED for the same reason, unlikable characters, and 00 feels the same. as for Macross Frontier, I am VASTLY upset because they focus on the Love Trianges too much, turning it into a borderly shoujo program. the special Ranka OP in episode 17 being one of the bigger offenders: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYIN256Yc_s

Basically with Gundam 00, it's the same problems that have been plaguaging the franchince due to Wing's Popularity+X and Turn A's unfortunate faulures, as well as the Gold Standard SEED Destiny achevied for the series, as I guess Real Robot is no loger "for me" anymore, as I have also been berated for Hating the malodrama of Code Geass. I miss the days of UC/X where the pilots were less whiney, and when they were, there was an awesome captain/father figure to set them straight, Brightslap etc.

Macross Frontier. I jsut feel a Macross Show should never had a focal point be a loli moeblob, and that the Valkyrie pilots (as well as the Valkyries and fightscenes themselves, are VERY lacking.) and again, focuses too much on teh shipz. I liked macross when it was about manly pilots like Roy Fokker and Max Genius, and Gamlin, and Kinryu, kicking ass, or awesome singers like BASARA singing aliens to death.

Then on the SUper side, I regularly get berated for not believing that TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGANN is not handed down on gold plates by God Himself. I am of the belief that TTGL is "okay at best" and like certain other Super Robot shows more. (Getter Robot (all of it's manga and OVa's as well.), GaoGaiGar/GaoGaiGar FINAL, Might Gaine, Gaiking Legend of Daikyu Maryu, Mazinkaiser, Kotetsushin Jeeg which I am still bitter that it fell off the radar directly because of GL fellatio. etc.) Let me make one thing REALLY CLEAR. I hate Studio GAINAX. after Gunbuster, they lost their magic, and only manage to have popularity with casuals because of EXCESSIVE FANSERVICE BEYOND BELIEVE and INCREDIBLY LOLWUT RANDOM PLOTS, be it through EVA mindscrew, or GL pissing over the conventions of Super Robot.

My MAIN gripe with GL, is the fact it seels itself too bad on it's OH GOD GAINAX HUEG
budget. just because it's pretty, doesn't make it good. Most of the characters are outright unbearable, the fight scenes have no structure whatsoever, the transformations/combinations are laughable, and it had the worst case of GAINAX END I have ever seen since END OF EVA,

I also don't like how it's fans act toward people who like other Super Robot shows. all this "GL is better than Getter Robo by default" talk for example. now, they argue that my opinions of Gurren Lagann are assinine because I hate the production company, and that I'm not happy if the show is not a quote "Monster of the Week Stock Footage Toy Commercial." I happen to like those things, Stock Footage, longer-better done Transformations, and Monster of the Week, are the very traditions that makes Super Robot what it is. You can't argue with Go Nagai's results! GaoGaiGar also had insane popularity in Japan, but since people love Gainax so very much, they have to bash things someone else likes better, because It's "Impossible for me to have a correct opinion" since I didn't like GL. Another thing I don't like it the ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER song/meme. It's a terrible song i my opinion, and tried to convey as much in a civil fashion, and I get called names due to the fact that "GaoGaiGar's music is terrible." which is Subjective. I just don't like Rap. Engrish/Japanese rap especially. they obviously don't like traditional Hot Blooded Super Robot songs, which GaoGaiGar's soundtrack is known for.

Am, I, Am I really the bad guy in this? they said that I was Fan Dumb, and specifically, I'm "The Purist" from the TVTropes FanDumb entry. yet I have liked things produced after 1999. I am avid Digimon fan (another thing they call me out on despite my hatred of whiney bishonen in Gundam and such, the difference is I like the Drama in Digimon, as I find it better written than modern Gundam drama. and Digimon has other things, like HOT BLOOD and such to make up for it's drama.) Like I said, I like the 2000 Super Robot Revivals, I liked Kotetsushin Jeeg, and another Grudge I hold with GL as I said, is that it made the new Jeeg series fall under the radar. I also enjoyed the more recent Patlabor OVA's and Movies, I have been very much enjoying VOTOMS Pailsen Files. Making icons of your own cosplay and offering them up for use by others? Fine.
Making icons of someone else's cosplay after first asking/receiving permission and crediting the cosplayer accordingly? A-okay.
Making icons of someone else's cosplay without asking permission, giving no credit (unless you count "Well i found the photos on a website, but I've lost the link, sorry" as credit), and then insisting on your own credit? NOT COOL.

Okay, I predominantly write in RPS fandom, which makes this a pretty pressing issue, but I've seen this in fictional fandoms as well, and the emperorsteele wank made me feel the need to reiterate this:

NOT ALL OF US THINK THE PEOPLE WE WRITE ABOUT ARE REALLY HAVING SEX. IT IS NOT ABOUT THAT.

Yeah, there are tinhats. There's crazy in every corner of the interwebs. But it isn't about someone really being gay and buttsexing their best friend/enemy/tentacle monster. It's about imagining the 'what ifs' that we find interesting or titillating and writing them to share with other people who find them the same way. Repeat: fic does not say "this person is gay" or even "this person could be gay", it says "what if they were gay?"

For that matter, WE ARE NOT AFFECTING YOUR CANON BY DREAMING UP OUR OWN. Boys don't magically start having sex with one another in the pages of your favourite manga because we like to write scenarios in which they do. Ballplayers aren't gonna bring a whole new meaning to the words 'high and tight' because someone writes them doing so.

We're not (all) delusional here. These aren't always reflections of what we think is real, or even what we think should be real, and they're not too likely to impact your enjoyment of said fandom object whatsoever. So for the love of God, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?!

Dear project manager,

You're a friend of mine, and you know that. And I know you have it rough these days. However, that is not going to stop me from pointing out all the bs you've managed to come up with.

Yes, I do realize people have real lives (I have a job! I KNOW!) and that shit happens. And I know bugging people after a deadline is due is tough. But dude. WE'VE BEEN DELAYED FOR THREE MONTHS, and our project has been ongoing since November of LAST YEAR, and it's supposed to be due in MAY. If you're just going to let everyone slide, why even bother with a fucking deadline? And as the leader, YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE THE ONE DOING ALL THIS SHIT ON TIME. Don't fucking extend the deadline because you suddenly can't make it when the only reason you have is ~*~procrastination~*~ when some of us did manage to finish on time even with school and jobs, when you... didn't have those. And don't you think it's just a little embarrassing that we had to delay the release date when we already had PAID pre-orders?

"But it's just fandom! We're only supposed to be doing this for fun!"

I agree, it's supposed to be for fun. But does that mean we don't need deadlines anymore? Not even when you've already been given several months to work on it? And don't you think things change, even a little, when you get a lot of people involved?

It's a huge, ambitious first project. I know. But a little perspective, here? I offered help several times. I was denied all those times. Then it turned out you can't make it in time, after all. Did you ask for help? No. I asked repeatedly if the most important part of the project was done yet a month ago. You avoided the question, avoided me, then asked one of the members to do it less than a week before the final deadline. Seriously, what? What if she had refused? Then we'll have to delay it even MORE, and that's just. Ugh.

So now, I'm the bitch because I should be GRATEFUL!!ichi!1niisan!1!! that it's done, instead of being irritated since we could have organized this a lot better. I AM glad it's done. However, if you're starting another project, I am definitely not joining unless if you manage to straighten yourself out, or if you find someone else who's willing to straighten YOU out.

I MUST have REASONABLE reason to hate someone's favorite character?

Well, from my POV; those topic of "Who you like/hate and reason why you like/hate him/her?" should be dropped or banned from discussion. Because it causes more problems than actives the decent discussion without wank of people get defensive "OMG HOW DARE U LIKE/HATE HIM/HER".

Yes, I replied the topic that I hate a female character A. Reason? To me she is annoying. And many of fic that turn her sue horrify me.
Comment replied of what I said; "She is annoying isn't reasonable reason of why you hate her. It's unfair to hate her base on bad fic."

I go WUT? After reading reply 3 times.

1. Because of she is your favorite doesn't mean she is not in my hate list. And not all people must like her as you like.
2. Like, dislike, hate is kinda personal feeling. Like taste people have different of taste. I hate pink, do I have to tell you why and must be reasonable at all?
3. As I said, first that character annoys me. The sue fic just make me more dislike her. I don't base all my hate on bad fic in the first place.
4. Please don't try to convince me to like her. Because it'll turn to opposite result if you annoy me enough. I won't magically turn 180 degrees to like her suddenly for the "reasonable reason" either.

Yes, I know I promise to upload the EP up after I can get it subbed by subbing team. (Who are very friendly to me <3)

Yes, I fucking know and download the said release already. But you know what?

1. I'm not the member of sub team.
2. I have life other than watching and uploading anime. Work 40+hours/week + 5 hours of Japanese class. Ya know. And with the ridiculous deadline coming, I can't focus over anime and fandom for sure.
3. My network is PITA. DL and UL rate turn to 0.0 kb/s after 9 PM. Which is the most of time I'm in front of my com.

I'll do it as fast as I can but since you are NOT asking me nicely, maybe next month or month after it if I have a good mood and TIME to do.

I'm kind of amazed by the number of doofii who seriously think that RP'ed character traits mirror the character traits of the player.

Oh god, whine whine, Pup C is in a suspect and not wholly healthy relationship with Pup X, their players must be deviants - they even acknowledge that it's suspect! Scream! Panic! Flame! RELEASE THE HOUNDS.

By that 'logic', anyone who plays Beyond Birthday, Hannibal Lecter, the Joker or Vicious should be under SWAT surveillance in case of sudden ludicrous homicidal mania.

Why are people so dim? I'm not my PCs. I do not possess a keyblade and pipes like Billy Zane, a sword longer than I am tall and silver hair down to my ass, the ability to turn into bats and out-sass any given Belmont, or eeeeeerie poweeeerrrrssssss of any sort. This should be obvious.

(This falls into the same category as 'just because X is a fic kink I like does not mean I would do X in real life'; the BDSM kinks I read, for example, are a lot more hot-fudge-with-pralines than anything I'd actually do IRL.)

On the other hand, it is just as annoying when someone claims that they're just playing their characters if they've chosen arbitrarily to make them all jackasses, or it's extremely clear that they're cut-pasting a bunch of their trains, likes and dislikes onto a character and using them as a canon-sue or stand-in for themselves?
