Neverending Waaaa~aank, aah-aah-aah...eh, you know the rest...
Some background--Pokémon was picked up by PUSA, who promptly fired all the original dub cast and replaced them with horrible, untalented "soundalikes". After fan outcry, PUSA recast, but still thumbed their noses as the 4Kids VAs who had played the parts for eight years. Neither side has yet to offer an explaination, but 4Kids VA Maddie (Meowth) Blaustein has taken part in a lot of fan discussions. Anyway, on with the wank!

You all remember SOVA, the group dedicated to getting back the original voice actors, right? Well, now Habunake (who some of you may remember having a picture of Fat May in his sig) has started SONVA, "dedicated" to keeping the new voice cast.

The wank comes when FabuVinny starts a thread asking Habunake "what are you guys trying to prove?"

And it bursts out of the floodgates from there. Habunake insists that PUSA has a better track record than 4Kids (even though out of three PUSA-dubbed episodes, there's already been major mistakes). Jonouchi insists that SOVA "tore apart the fandom," not offering any explaination. FabuVinny weighs in on the whole "going on national TV" thing that gave SOVA a black eye. Habunake comes back hating on SOVA for something no one can remember anyone saying.

And that's just on the first page! Later, Pie, the head of the SOVA, gets involved, then the whole thing gets locked. But it remains for your viewing pleasure.

Were the original VAs too expensive, and this was a cost-cutting measure? Or are the PUSA execs just complete morons?

According to Blaustein, there were never any negotiations, so PUSA never even *tried* to get the original VAs. Naysayers claim that 4Kids wanted too much, but I don't see how that would have done anything since they were officially out of the picture at the time, and the VAs would have gone into it as free agents.

The very idea of Pokemon VAs that suck more than the original dub cast makes me want to curl into a ball and whimper.

Not that the original dub wasn't entertaining. It was. But because it was so delightfully over-the-top bad.

Agreed. James was the most fabulously awesome dub character ever, next to the whatthefuckery of Samurai Pizza Cats.

Me and my roommate were talking about this just the other day, in fact...

Having been one of those people who 'grew up with pokemon', the idea of them replacing ANYONE... jessie, james, brock, ash, MEOWTH... it's mindblowing. They've been such an iconic part of my later childhood, I don't think I could watch any episodes with new voices. I'm not saying they're BAD- not by any stretch of the imagination. It's just... well. I've come to know and love those voices. Why do they feel they need to be replaced at all, you know? :/

Besides, losing Jessie, James, & Meowth's VAs would kill me. Different voices saying THE MOTTO? No. No way. Do not want.

Sadly, we've heard it. And it's not very good. Some of the new voices are all right, but the motto doesn't have that flair that it's supposed to have...

No no, one SOVAer wanted to, and all the anti-SOVAers tried to point to that as "See what they want to do? They're going to give us all a bad name for liking Pokémon!" and kept going on and on about that one point even though the sane members of SOVA were against it.

I've been friends with Pie for countless years and I totally supported her with SOVA thing when I heard about it (and gotten flack for it, too).

I had no idea there would be this much drama over it. It kind of boggles the mind.

When did our fandom get like this? It's so incredibly against the never-give-up, love-everybody, happy feel-good nature of Pokémon.

*headdesk*

A fandom.. that WANTS the old dub. A fandom... that wants... ANY dub..................... no... no... if there's one thing I HATE about being a Pokemon fan in America, it's that because the original is cmmerically unavailable (they want to keep it appropriater for t3h CHILLLLLLLDREN), peopel jsu tuse dub names, dub terminology... anytime they do find out a bout a change,r msot of the time there's only a small outrage... What the fuck? When Sailor Moon was first butchered here, sites popped up detailing every horrible edit... Pokemon only has Dogasu's BAckpack, a great site, but... ARGH... Fuck it, I don't car eiff I sound elietist, i'm using original Japanese names for all things Pokemon and thats it! (Though Idon't ahve to say "Pcoket Monsters" because Japan uses the abbreviation too)

Huh? What on earth is wrong with fans wanting the version that they knew and enjoyed? As you said yourself, the Japanese version isn't easily available in America, so it's not surprising that American fans would like the version that they, y'know, watched.

Fuck it, I don't car eiff I sound elietist, i'm using original Japanese names for all things Pokemon and thats it!

It's not elitist to prefer the Japanese version. What is elitist is implying that fans are criminally insane for not a) being familiar with your preferred version and/or b) frothing at the mouth because of the HORRIBLE HORRIBLE O HORRIBLY HORRIBLE changes that were made.

In short, you are an elitist wanker who needs to learn how to spell. Perhaps all that time spent watching Pokemon in Japanese decreased your ability to use the English language properly?

I'll be frank. I'm amazed Pokemon is still running, period. I don't mean that in an insulting tone, but I find it mind blowing it still has episodes to dub.

I'm a voice actor freak, and I always find it sad when they replace someone. Well, not always. There are circumstances where I like the change. In this case, it's sad. They kicked off everyone who'd worked so long on the series. If one or two people left, it could just be the actors leaving for personal reasons or problems with them.

If what's being said is true, they didn't even bother to negotiate with them. Depressing. Even if you don't like the cast they had, that was still a job for them. I'm sure they have other work to turn to, but imagine working on something for 8 years and having to leave it behind. You know what I'm trying to say? I'm not sure I'm getting the message across very well.

I wouldn't wank over it, but it's kind of sad to hear about it.

I just want my flaming James back. I mean, as sexy (and boy do I mean sexy) as his voice is in Japanese, it's it's english VA that had me coming back to the dub. I also liked Meowth's voice because it's less... jarring in english. Not that I don't live the Japanese Meowth. Truth be told, the Japanese meowth sounds more like a pokemon that learned how to talk rather then a pokemon with a voice transplant.

Still, this is quite the wank. Will it ever end? I mean, even if the original VA's come back then half the fandom will wank about it because... I dunno but they'll find a reason. No one can win!

Seems to me that this TGB character was achin to start some shit, the way he ran in, triumphantly laying the verbal (typed) smackdown on someone for mentioning his *acronym* and calling it self defense. Then hung on to the very end, trying to stir it up more with his 'ignore' strategy.

And I can't get over the fact that these are adults. I can dig liking it, and posting to a forum, a little battle here and there. But woah. calm down.

Meh, I prefer the games. The anime is just BAD, and it NEVER ENDS. I tried watching the subs to see if they were better, but no. Just terrible. I supposed by I'm spoiled by my own vision of not-for-little-kids pokémon. Oh well.

That said, I'm annoyed that they kicked James' voice actor, especially. YOU DO NOT MESS WITH THE FLAMING GAY.

Have Butch and Cassidy shown up again? Because surely Butch's voice had nowhere to go but up...

(I shouldn't pick on his voice. I used to defend it against dub-haters, though I didn't have much of a defense beyond "Lighten up, he's only in three episodes and his voice is kind of funny.")

See, this is EXACTLY why I'm glad I never lived in an English-speaking country. My first exposure to Pokemon was in Swedish and I watched the rest of the series in Hebrew, making the Israeli dub the one I'm used to and loved to bits and pieces back when it was still good. And when I bitch and moan about how our dub sucks these days (Ash's VA hit puberty long ago and is just trying too hard, Max's was on the edge of puberty the entire eighth season and the kid they replaced him with is too young and sucks ass, we're on our fourth Meowth and he never sounded more ridiculous, and James' voice just got worse and worse and closer to Stuart's travesty after the original VA left, six seasons into the series), you know who cares?

Just me. Which is quite fun because then there's no wank to speak of. =D

...our James used to sound SO HOT. He was like... Kojirou with James' camp. Which means that he was SEXY and FUN all at the same time. AND HE PWNED ALL THE JAMESES IN THE WORLD. He could never pwn the original Japanese Kojirou (Miki is pure love), but he pwned everyone else. Oh, James, what happened to you? *sobs*
