Comics, linkblogging, and WTFery
Okay, here's the deal.

James Meeley has a comics blog, in which he posts his various opinions, as comics bloggers are wont to do. When Fangirls Attack is a linkblog which cites articles that are relevant to the issue of women in the comics industry (as characters, creators, fans, etc.) Meeley's Blog gets linked there (it's the very last article on that page.) It also gets linked in Blog@Newsarama's Meanwhile column (don't look for the link, it's been pulled), which happens to be by Melissa Krause, aka Kalinara, who also compiles WFA with fellow blogger Ragnell.

Meeley responds as follows:

Please cease and desist linking to my blog. I do not need, nor want, your help. I will find an audience on my own. Thank you.

Kalinara deletes the link from Meanwhile, because she doesn't want to kick up a fuss there, but it stays at WFA, and Ragnell points Meeley to the now-updated-because-of-this linking policy. (Meaning, they link everyone.)

I care nothing for your ploicies. I don't care WHY you want to link me. I don't care if the "help" I get from it is unintentional or not. It's MY blog. Just as it's MY house. You can't come into it and do whatever you want. I just want you to stay away from me and leave me alone (because, as you so painfully wanted me to see, it's not intentions that matter, but the end result and the end result of you linking me, is you playing a part in my blogs development and success, no mater how slight, and I won't stand for it).

I don't care if I'm the only linkable blog left in the world. You made it quite clear I'm not welcome at your blogs, so I no longer go to them (this abberation notwithstanding). I except the same courtesy, as I don't want you going to mine. You are equally unwelcome there.

I don't care if my post would revolutionize how women veiw comics, save the industry and bring about a new golden age for comics, if it were to be linked here. I do not want it. It's MY blog, respect MY choice. Just as I respect your's that I stay away from your blogs (and by proxy, will not be linking them).

You hate me. You wanted me gone. You got it. But don't come tracking me down to use as fodder for your blogs. If you want me to stay away from you, you need to stay away from me, as well. So, do it!

And it keeps going. Meeley continues to protest his publicly viewable blog posts being made more public, or something, and the rest of the commenters, and much of the surrounding comics blogosphere, tell him to STFU. (I'm linking to Chris's ISB post on the matter because he pretty much links all the major responses, and I'd just be poaching from him anyway.)

Highlights include Meeley's explanation for why he doesn't want these particular bloggers blogging him: my "problem" is that two women who have professed hatred for me and made every effort to tell me "go away" are now invading MY space and have no intention of stopping, if it suits their own whims. Perhaps that isn't a big deal for you. It is for me, however. Kalinara denies any hatred, and to date there have been no citations for whatever the hell this is supposed to be referring to, so .

But there's also the following:

This isn't Soviet China. You don't force someone into something they don't want to do. Respect my right to have my blog promoted as I see fit. Considering this is a feminist-minded blog and that similar thoughts have been expressed in women's issues (like abortion, for example) isn't it odd that the women here are unwilling to grant that very same respect to others. Maybe I ought to start my own slogan: "MY blog, MY choice." Perhaps that might make my point reach people's minds.

Tell me, if you needed money for something, and someone who you knew was a terrorist offered to give it to you, would you accept it? I'm guessing not.

I built it from the ground up. It was my idea, my design. I funrish it (with topics) and maintain it (both with comments and it's layout). I make the rules there and I decide who gets to come in or not. The punks from this blog aren't welcome there, just as they made painfully clear I'm not welcome at theirs.

About the last bit, Tom Foss points out:

Actually, no you didn't. You built it based on the "Minima Black" template offered by Blogger. Building it from the ground up woult imply the construction of your own template; you built it from a prefabricated frame.

It's also pointed out that things like LJ's friends-locking help with the "uninvited guests" problem. ShellyS handles most of that. Tom Foss, again, probably has the best comment:

Hey, genius, you do realize that every time you post a reply, it links to your profile page, which links to your blog, right?

So every time you ask a blog not to link to your blog, you're posting a link to your blog on that site. So now, instead of one link to you on this page, there are four.

Okay, five.

Most of the comics blogosphere follows suit. I would kill for this kind of exposure. Hint.

There's wank on the Blog@Newsarama comment page, but it's not quite as juicy. Apologies if this all comes across as sort of one-sided, but... dude, LOOK at it.

ETA: The source of the feud has been located! (I need to read Wank Report more often.) Does it help him any? Take a guess.

And Guess who's been in a similar situation! Ragnell/Morchades' LJ has some word on her and the recent kerfluffle.

ETA 2: And he's bahleeted his comments from WFA and ISB AND taken down his blog! I think I got most of the good stuff, but did anyone get caps?

Yey! You posted this! I saw the links on Wank Report, read the whole thing, but I didn't have any time to do a write up. I think "Please cease and desist linkage" is the catchphrase of the future.

Really, because I have no idea what's going on in this wank but he just seems like such an ass for that.

He's a recurring poster, every two or three months he'll surface, and each cycle it gets worse. His ugly side first surfaced for me in the comments to this post (http://ragnell.blogspot.com/2006/03/wheres-my-adolescent-power-fantasy.html), but most of his arguments are deleted without any screen caps (http://ragnell.blogspot.com/2006/03/wheres-my-adolescent-power-fantasy.html#c114213815519372669). He also deleted his first blog at that point.

There's earlier stuff with Fanboy Rampage, and on GL message boards. He's a major Anti-Hal pro-Kyle guy.

I sort of would understand a bafflement on the part of James. Logic would dictate if someone dislikes you, they would stay away from your journal and certainly not do anything to promote it.

On the other hand, I so want to ask him if he's PMSing.

Maybe someone should explain to this guy that, actually, anyone can link to any public website they damn well please without asking permission. Because it's public information. That's the way teh intarweb works. Also, linking to someone's blog is not necessarily "promotion", any more than a review is necessarily praise. :P

I love it when clueless n00bs make up their own special rules of etiquette, which run completely counter to the existing rules by which everyone else operates, and expect everyone else to accomodate them. WTF?! We need a clue transplant, stat!

He considers linking to his site an invasion of his space and forcing him to do something he doesn't want to do? What the fuck?

It's not like people coming into your house and doing whatever they want. It's a lot more like you building an entirely glass house in a busy city, then saying only people you approve of can look at you through your transparent walls and/or tell other people where the idiot with the see-through house is.
