Minor Penny and Aggie Webcomic Kerfluffle
Penny and Aggie is a webcomic that updates Monday, Wensday, and Friday. It deals with teen issues in highschool between the popular and unpopular crowd and is a pretty good read. A recent string of strips deal with the issue of teen sex and Wensday's strip is left on a cliffhanger.

Wank occurs in the forums containing cries of double standards, stereotypes, teen sex, who should be blamed and sexual preference with a side dish of propper bathroom manners. It's died down a bit, but as the potential to ignite once more.

Marshall's reaction to his pent-up girlfriend, Karen, busting in on him in the men's gym shower stirs up some surprised reactions at first. All is going smoothly until poster StarKruzr comments that:

What is with this bizarre and oft-repeated concept in this forum of a red-blooded American teenage male being "scandalized" by HIS GIRLFRIEND coming into the shower with him? ...If Marshall is reacting like this, he either has the sex drive of a brick or is gay...

Highlights:

ivy-chan: I dislike the assumption that if a young male is presented with a naked young woman, all rational thought goes completely out the window and everything escalates to sex, and if this does not happen, the young man is clearly gay. (Leaving out asexual altogether, which embitters me in a different way.) Marshall has made his feelings on this matter as clear as possible, he doesn't want to have sex, he doesn't think he is ready. Shockingly, I knew a few guys in high school who were going to be celibate until marriage. They're rare, but they're around, and still amazingly not gay.

Tarlia:If the roles were reversed, and she was "scandalized" by HIM coming into her shower, would you assume she was gay or had the sex drive of a brick, too?

What is it with this assumption that all straight teenage males MUST want to have sex?

Fen:And I hate Karen. Why? Cause I find myself in her former stereotype(the Chubby girl, that dresses unfashionable and gets mocked. oh, and wears glasses) and I'm doing fine by myself. I'd never become like she is now, a greedy, attention-hungry, snob. And she can't be chubby. really. Look at her clothes. She mostly stuff that only look good on perfectly slim people.

Ever since she lost weight she's lost every moral value she had. And I really can't figure out how Marshall and her could form a couple.

StarKruzer:He's being presented with his girlfriend, who is naked, and whom he supposedly is attracted to, and she's soaked from head to toe with him in the shower. "WHAT are you DOING?" is not a normal reaction to this, WHATSOEVER. Perhaps "Karen!" or "Honey!" followed by nervous laughter. Not... outrage.

No teenage male is going to be "morally offended" by his girlfriend doing what Karen did -- unless he is asexual or gay.

Your gender-equality indignance is misdirected, trust me on this.

Ollie, have any of those guys expressed clear interest in women? Have any of them even had girlfriends, or are they still stuck in nerdy celibacy (and I use this term as "lack of ALL sexual contact including KISSING) which, because they can't escape from it, they must embrace as part of their identity as a way of gaining control over it? ...

Marshall, had he been a straight, NORMAL teenage male, could have seized upon this event to show Karen what he WAS comfortable with in terms of sexual activity, be it "heavy petting" or any number of other things that could have been quite satisfying for her. We didn't have to see it in-frame, either -- obviously.

StarKruzr:( in response to Fen on Karen loosing moral fiber) Has she decided that it's acceptable to kill people? Has she decided it's now acceptable to cheat on tests or steal? No. She was trapped in a mental and emotional box which you AND I understand quite well and is currently dealing with the consequencs of being freed from that box.

iRobot: It's not right for a guy to pressure a girl into sex, what makes you think it's okay for a girl to pressure a guy into sex? Double standard much?

There's more in the comments.

Well, he could start by locking his bathroom door...I know if someone got in the shower with me, no matter how close I was to them, I'd be all "WTFGetout!"

They're in a gym, so it's not his bathroom door that's locked. It's the communal-shower-stalls-area kind of place.

I like the point someone made: if the roles were reversed and the dude was busting in on the chick's shower time and pestering her constantly about sex, there would be outrage and prophecies of impending rape.

By the way, am I the only one who gets really annoyed by Penny and Aggie all the time but still just can't stop reading the damn thing?

I'm worse with Kevin and Kell. I think I actively dislike it now, but I can't stop reading it.

Sometimes I can get into K&K, and sometimes I'm over the whole herbivore/carnivore thing.

I'm waiting 'til the little baby bunny eats the entire family.

Yeah, I'm the same way.

The only reason I'm reading it is because when I first read it they had the guest artist, I thought Marshall was just a really butch chick and squee lesbians.

Nope. I do, too- I keep hoping they'll eventually follow through with their "Penny might have a crush on Aggie!" hints. (Unlikely, but still.)
The art annoys me, too- when the *artist's* advice for telling two people apart is "this one has shinier hair!" then you have issues with character design.

And yet I can't look away!

Those are two different characters? No wonder I was confused. (Just went and read bits b/c of the wank.)

Augh, that's definitely how they got me, too. I showed up during the bit where Aggie had that dream, too. I was hoping Aggie might at the very least turn out to be bi . . .

When it started, it was really about Penny and Aggie's rivalry. I think that with the addition of so many new characters, the story has neglected that. I hope they get back to it in the near future.

I keep getting confused by the story - not because it's very complex, but because they like to make the dialogue/story presentation "edgy" and I'm like, "Wait, what are we talking about now? What just happened? Don't switch scenes in the middle!"

Most of the previous storyline completely flew over my head. What was Christian girl trying to do and why? What was that riddle? Why was Aggie so bothered by it?

YES. OMG that plotline confused the hell out of me. They like to tell the story in silent pictures too, which leaves me all wait...what? Huh?

As near as I could figure out was that Christian Girl doesn't like Happy Riddle Girl for some reason, and she(Christian Girl) made a flyer pretending to be by Happy Riddle Girl, saying that she(Happy Riddle Girl) was disguising BOMBS as those riddle box things. So Happy Riddle Girl would get into trouble for this and/or be ostracized or something. Apparently Christian Girl has a very odd sense of humor. I'm not sure what Happy Riddle Girl is supposed to have done to her.

But then Happy Riddle Girl found out about it(when they were making the flyers/putting them up? o.O ) and cried and Christian Girl laughed.

I, too, would like a bit more clarity in the storylines.

...Actually, wait, I think parts of that were wrong, after re-reading the strips. But I'm pretty sure that the Christian girl was just trying to be mean to the box girl(because the girl putting up boxes hangs out with Penny). Dunno if she meant the flyer she put to be taken seriously and have the box girl get in trouble/whatever for it, or if she was just being sarcastic about her... I THINK she meant it to be taken seriously, because she had the other girl faking the handwriting and all. And Aggie was upset at the "being mean for no reason, to someone who hasn't actually done anything to you" side of the Christian girl. Like... "Maybe this isn't someone I want to be friends with, if they pull stuff like that." And it looked like the Christian girl was being nasty to one of her friends, the one who was involved, but didn't really want to be, as well, BECAUSE the other girl didn't want to be involved.

Oh, GOD, no!

I admit to being confuzzled at the "Why isn't he all 'Hells Yeah! Let's fuck!'" reaction? Hell, SHE'S not sure what she's doing there! It's not like they're even alone there!

I'm not sure if I see StarKruzer's point about Karen getting pretty and therefore turning into a giant bitch (her popularity rivalry with Penny was gross).

And yeah, less Marshall being OMG scandalized by naked woman than naked co-worker he's dating jumping him in a public restroom.

Fair point, I think, about double standards regarding male and female sexuality. Though the male spectrum has nobody to blame but themselves for the image of young men as virile and eager.

Dude, my bf would do the same thing if I hopped in unannounced, and certainly if it were in a public-type place like a gym. (And no, he isn't gay, although god I wish he was bi.)

Sometimes guys don't want you to see them in an 'un-sexy' pose, like scrubbin' the scroat. Or maybe they are taking care of business by themselves.

Ohh! I was just thinking about this wank last night.

I love the undercurrent of Karen hate because she's fat. They had a wank about that a few weeks ago, along with a poster who were glad there were no girls like Agie around in her High School because she'd crush them.

*sigh*
The bords are like being back in Highschool, but I love the comic.
I still want them to do a gay storyline.

Because, like, people have right to react to their problems DIFFERENTLY than you, rly. EVERYONE in your same should do *just* the same thing you do.

No, acting like a complete bitch doesn'tm suit me. So, to Hell with you and your "bitchy girl who hates whoever doesn't agree with her" stereotype, kthx.
