So, I found out about this due to someone posting a link to it in a totally unreleated community I belong to on LJ:

OHNOES! MY SNAPE MPREG FIC COULD MAKE LJ LOTS OF MONEYS. D:

Obviously, the announcement isn't what I'm posting this for. To me it just seems like another situation of a proposal taken out of context and twisted by certain parties to incite paranoia where there needn't be any.

Oh no. I'm posting this for the delicious comments. Yes indeedy. Plenty of folks are spazzing out, but some are trying to find a silver lining, and some are trying to point out flaws in the whole shebang.

ETA- [info]allika: "Aw, Jesus, I'm scared now. I've just finsished '1984', so this is especially creepy. EVERYONE POST THIS EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!

So remember, Big Brother is watching ... your hot hot Sailor Moon/Linkin Park/X-Men/My Little Pony/Malcolm in the Middle/Care Bears crossover lemon.

Ah! AH! AH.......AHAHAHHAAHAHHAHA!!!!!...ha.

I'd have to say that it's small penance for what LJ usually has to put up with - the teenibloggers, the fen, and just plain...teh stoopid. Let 'em make their monies. For God's sake, you pay them to let you use up to 100 more PIXELLATED SQUARES TO EXPRESS YOUR INDIVIDUALITY!!!111 then you're normally allowed, so really, what's letting them rake in millions because you're going to be the next...I dunno, Neil Gaiman, or something.

"Snape MPREG fic...saving the world, one blogging server at a time!"

This whole wank reminds me of that stupid "OMG BUSH IS GOING TO BAN ANIME" petition that made the rounds a year ago or so...and the "OMG BUSH IS GOING TO BAN LOLICON OMG" topics on 4chan...which both turned out to be total bulldoink. Besides, this proposal doesn't even cover fanfics or other written material.

WTF?

This is EXACTLY the kind of stuff I rant about on my LJ! This is why I say that we are in a Dark Age! Those who oppress the masses, limits their intellegence and hinders the progress of humankind are the ENEMIES! These fat cats are only interested in lining thier already fat pockets with more money. They don't care about freedoms, creativity, and *gasps* intellegence. This treaty would only cause distrust with the Internet, the most reliable and convenient method (so far) of communications. I would not want to have my creativity, my honest, hard work 'copyrighted' by another whom I already paid for using their webspace! It's asinine! I have copyrighted stuff posted online, and I don't want that webhost or any other hosts to trample my rights and plagiarise my stuff! I write a bunch of fanfic, I have fanart, and I do original work as well! What has this society become if we are censored and our hard work is stolen!
And I better stop now before I make myself sick with rage! I submitted a "letter!" I think I will write one out and send it the old fashioned way - but maybe I'll photocopy a thousand of them and send all of those too! I pimped out a link to this entry, and I hope that everyone else does, too!
Thank you very much, herowlness, for posting this! You are one of the few lights still illuminating our Dark Age! Thank you, and keep on shining!

Sarcasm or no?

This is all over my flist and my reaction is basically, "So?"

Do these people really think the Evil Masterminds of LJ are going to sieve through the MILLIONS of posts on LJ in search of their little nuggets of fanfic genius?

Please. They're too busy rolling in the mountains of gold created by all of those people who would rather buy pixelations of flowers than the real deal.

ICON LOVE!!!!1onr1

On that not, does someone mention this site? Someone on my flist was ABSOLUTELY spazzing about this early this morning, and they redirected that site, where two things make me go o_O:

× it's most recent view of the treaty is from Sep. 2005
× in the form letter it says: " Next week, representatives at WIPO will decide whether to hold a diplomatic conference to adopt the treaty in early 2006."

Personally, I'm convinced this is old information and people are getting fussed up about nothing. Or the people sending out the form protest are effin' (hahah!) retarded.

Am I incorrect in assuming that, even if this is true, this really doesn't mean shit in the grand scheme of fanfiction? I can't get my Harry Potter slash published anyway, and so, neither can any unscrupulous person at LJ who might want to steal it (for God knows what reason).

Besides, if you baleete, your intellectual property isn't on their servers anymore. So what's the big damn deal?

Strangely enough this might have come out of an article in the Wall Street Journal the other day. Apparently publishers are tapping fanfic writers for fairly decent contracts. Cansandra Claire got a mention. The title of the article is "Rewriting the Rules of Fiction."

OH NOEZ!!! Forget the fanfic, Livejournal can turn my boring ass life into a made for tv miniseries! And that would be horrors (for everyone else).

Actually, we don't need to worry about them stealing the intellectual rights to our fanfic, since we have no right to our fanfic to begin with. I find it funny when people get huffy about others stealing their fanfic ideas, cuz, you know, kettle, pot, black.

(Frankly, most of the stuff on LJ that it would be legal to sell is also completely commercially useless. If LJ wanted to steal ramblings about how character X is a misunderstood wooobie, they could legally sell it, but who wants to buy? )

Now, see, what's funny to me- I wouldn't post important (to me) creative work on LJ in the first place.

Fanfic, as much fun as it is, does not count as "important creative work".

You're right, though, the comments are delicious. Gertinator brings the sanity, mandarin226 pipes up with "persecuted TV fan" line, and numerous others puzzle over a (non-existent) US law, from their galaxies far, far way- AND. THAT'S. JUST. THE. FIRST. PAGE. *uncontrollable sniggering*.

On a side note, I'm very disappointed that this isn't actually a mpreg Snape fic wank. *shakes fist-of-thwarted-fandom-doom at gusty*
