Top Gear Wank...
So, Richard Hammond, Top Gear presenter, is critically ill in hospital after crashing while trying to break the British land speed record for the new series of Top Gear.

Tragic, right?

Well, things start to get wanky on [info]livejournal_uk. Fairly one-sided for now, as possible troll [info]nyecamden gets shot down by pretty much everyone. Watch at how the conversation goes from 'all car drivers deserve to die', 'computers are modern and unnecessary too' to 'why should we care about celebrities?'

Then, like trolls are wont to do, here comes the obligatory one liner with disabled comments to stir things up a bit.

And, predictably, the community reacts.

Get well soon, hamster. ♥

I was wondering how long it'd take for the wank to start. *headdesk*

My sister's a huge fan of Top Gear and right now her MSN username has a 'Get well Richard Hammond' in it. I've seen it all day, but haven't had the chance to ask her just who Rich was, since she was away and whatnot and just now decided it Google it.
I am now more amused at the sheer coincidence of Fandom Wank having the entry right after I decided to figure out what was going on, than I am about the wank.
Although I'm equally amused that there's a Top Gear fandom.

That being said, poor guy. When I watched TG with my sis, he was always so funny.

I'd been watching this all day and wondering whether to report. It's not taken long for a hack somewhere to piss people off with a particularly arsey article. The comments are a gold mine at the moment (including a Mexican commenter with a fixation about penis size)

I find this all a bit cruel. The guy's adorable.

Even if it were someone I didn't like, I'd still hope they got better... just very slowly and painfully.

Poor Hamster. Won't be the same if he's not alright.

I honestly cannot understand this sentiment that risk takers deserve the worst outcome? I mean, if they don't accept the possibility of the negative I can understand, and, sure, I can accept a little less sympathy for somebody who puts themselves into those situations. Because, seriously, I can think of far more people who deserve to be in a horrific car crash than guy speeding around at 20 miles above the limit.

Yes, I've been waiting for this one to happen too; how long before people start with the Steve Irwin parallels?

Don't know a thing about the guy personally and I tend to feel that people who take such extraordinary risks are implicitly accepting the possibility of a disastrous outcome, so I hope he understood what he was taking on. Having said that, the news that he is likely to "make a full recovery" - albeit not a rapid one - is very welcome.

Nice to see that fellow-presenters Clarkson and May have behaved with a certain amount of sensitivity too. Good on them.

Okay, this is freaky. Everywhere I look I see [info]nyecamden - it's like she is stalking me.

First I noticed her at the Discworld comm a few weeks ago, can't remember why, but her goblin icon stuck to my mind. Then she ended up commenting on an entry of not one, but *two* of my friends' journals through random pollsurfing (as in she takes a random poll url and then just changes the identifying number of the poll to vote in random polls). And now she's on fandom_wank.

*boggles*

Here that 'pop', that's the sound of my innocence disapearing. I honestly thought this would not bring wank. Oh internets I shall never doubt your mighty powers of spooging again.

Richard is the name of my future hamster. He shall have hamster racing goggles, and a hamster scarf, and the sweetest hamster mobile money can buy.

My two other future pets don't know what they want to be yet, though I have a niggling suspicion that Cpt Slow will be a cool googly eyed fish. That or a cat. I like cats.

After hearing the news one of my first thoughts was "Just wait for the wank..." My actual *first* reaction was to burst into tears, cos mum had heard the news wrong (stupid ITV over-reactions. Grr) and told me that Hamster had died. But then I found out he had survived and had to sprint round to the train station to get into uni on time! Thankfully I managed to find another TG enthusiast and we sat checking our phones for news every couple of minutes.

And YAY for the improvement in his condition!

I’m not really into cars, but I love watching Top Gear. The great interaction of all the presenters makes it hilarious and I adore totally unPC aspect of it. Hammond was like a little yappy dog, jumping up, wagging his tail and getting told to “sit” by Clarkson and May. The three of them made a great team on TV and I hope he returns quickly.
