Racism wank, Joystiq style
Over on Joystiq (yes, them again), Vladimir Cole posts a piece containing pics of the upcoming XBox 360 Blue Dragon bundle, which will only be available in Japan. A fairly normal type of post, but Vlad the Offender opens it with this:

If you're wondering why us round-eyes ain't gonna see a price break on the Xbox 360 this holiday, Japan might have something to do with it.

The commenters go off, some of them pointing out the racism implied by the phrase "round eyes", while others aren't nearly as offended.

"angry reader" calls for Vladimir's firing:

As a Japanese-Chinese American, I am highly offended by this post's lack of sensitivity. Not only do you use an offensive racial slur that is considered antiquated by the civilized, you alienate American history by ignoring the fact that "we round-eyes" also include a vibrant immigrant history that Asians have contributed heavily towards.

If Summa's accidental Wii overhype was ripe enough firing, this one is also without any second thought or question. I hope joystiq takes into account the readership. By keeping this bigot as a commenter, you tell us that IBM processors are worth more than our collective historical and contemporary contributions.

Monkeys replies:
Well, this post was by Vladimir Cole...you know the guy who pisses off 90% of Joystiq commentators.

angry reader's response:
Monkey,

That's no excuse for his insensitivity. He's a "professional" journalist that has a wide readership. His job standards bind him to professionalism that if violated, should justify canning. If someone on IGN or Engadget or CNN uses that term loosely, be it explicit or implicity, he would be fired immediately.

Once again, I cannot believe that some mainstream news source uses a term that brings up a two century history of explosive West vs East tensions.

Others chime in and promptly miss the point:

Yeah, describing a shape as spherical rather than non-spherical is so racist!

Grow up.

---

Uh.."round eyes" refers to white people Mr.Angry Reader. And really, calm the fuck down. It was one comment, was kinda funny, and it's such a small thing. Let it go everybody.

---

Angry Reader and Max Payne, calm the fuck down. It's ONE comment, Jesus Christ. It's barely anything. That's not even offensive. All asian people know their eyes are different than a caucasian person, so why the fuck are you getting so pissed?

Still more responses follow, and that's only the first page...

ETA: Don't know if I overlooked this the first time around, but it appears comments have now been locked "as the bulk of comments posted were off-topic." Heh.

And every fucking asian knows their eyes are different from other people's so why get so fucking mad? Oh, is it because a person who wasn't asian made that comment? Obviously. I think that is more racist.

Alas, poor logic. Defenestrated, dismembered, decapitated and dumped in the rancid river reeking of racism.

if anything, i took that joke as a sarcastic jab at ourselves. i think he was pseodo-referencing us from an outward persepctive of the, often but not always, finicky japanese consumers and their anti-american tastes.

"Pseodo-referencing us from an outward perspctive"? Zuh?

Also, Anne Rice? Is that you?

Doesn't make sense, that comment, does it?

So... do they think Japanese companies release Japan-only bundles and products only to spite American customers?

News flash, dear American gamer: the world does not revolve around you.

Putting aside the fact that it is considered a racial slur - as well as my bafflement over anyone wibbling over the fact - I just have to say...

Emo tears. Emo tears are pouring out of my 'round eyes'. Seriously. Is it offensive? I suppose. But someone needs to tell Mr Japanese-Chinese American to pull the stick out of his arse before logging onto the internets...much less the most wanktastic gamers' forum EVER.

You know... by trying to shame the OP by explaining how Asians (Chinese and Japanese specifically) have contributed to the Western world and done nothing short of shape a nation... AngryReader only enforces the stereotype that the Chinese believe they invented everything.

I wonder what his reaction would be if someone told him that?

I just have to quietly boggle, because I work at an IBM plant that makes chips for 360s.

I'm also boggling that by making a comment aimed at white America, it's racist towards other nationalities. I don't doubt that it's possible, I'm just pretty surprised.

*sigh* Thus proving that Gamers perhaps have the greatest number of guys who think that this kind of slur-slinging is cool and edgy. But then, I used to watch horrified in an anime irc channel as they "raped" each other in greeting, Asians and Caucasians called each other slant/round eyes, and joked about a member who lived in the (not really deep) south burning crosses in black people's yards and screwing his sister.

:( Come on guys, you're purpetuating the stereotypes/racial strife.

Oy vey. Who actually goes around calling people round eyes?

The only time I've ever heard anyone use it was my dad, once. He served in Vietnam, in the north (so no visits from Bob Hope or any of those organizations for him!) and he said that after several months/years, anyone with round-eyes instantly becomes attractive, simply because it's a reminder of home.

I boggle at the people quibbling that the comment isn't "that racist" so Angry should chill.

But on the other hand-

He's a "professional" journalist that has a wide readership.

Uh-huh. Really. Since when did that equal "sensitive and responsible" or better yet "unoffensive". Dude, obnoxious sensationalism is part the journalist job description. If it wasn't, Time magazine wouldn't still be in print. And Coulter wouldn't be so loved/hated. And Howard Stern...never mind...*would prefer to pretend Stern is actually an Alien. Or better yet a a bad dream brought on by bad clams*

But I suppose logic is too much to ask from Joystiq:(
