Terry Gilliam has mentioned in a new interview that he has no interest in directing the last two Harry Potter movies. He then proceeded to slam the first two. Relevant quote:

MTV: Another no-brainer hit film would have been making a "Harry Potter" flick, and J.K. Rowling fought with the studio to let you direct the first movie. So would you ever direct one of the sequels?

Gilliam: Warner Bros. had their chance the first time around, and they blew it. It's a factory job, that's what it is, and I know the way it's done. I've had too many friends work on those movies. I know the way it works, and that's not the way I work.

MTV: What would your "Potter" have been like?

Gilliam: Alfonso Cuaron's ["Prisoner of Azkaban"] is really good, but the first two I thought were just shite. They missed the whole point of it; they missed the magic of it ... Alfonso did something much closer to what I would've done.

Never ones to let insults to the franchise go quietly, fans on both The Leaky Cauldron and Mugglenet are wanking steadily. A sampling of the comments from each:

Mugglenet:
auror1470: Boo-hoo....he is jealous because he is not getting a piece of the millions the movies are grossing....All the directors have done a great job...do they follow the books to a "T" no...but they are still great movies...

H_J_Potter: WTF?! It's a good thing he's not directing, because PoA was SO screwed..How dare he insult SS and CoS! >:O!

cool_varzz: what a screwed up man ,he has the odesity to talk about HARRY POTTER films when he knws shhh about film making, whereas the HP FILMS are huggggeeee....i think hes doing a favour on us by turning the offer down and not screwing the films...WHAT SAY PEOPLE??

DUI_King:Terry Gilliam, shut up, just because you were in Monty Python doesn't mean you even know what your talking about. The first two movies were the best movies in my opinion, what magic did they NOT capture? POA is the worst movie out of the 4 so far, it had no main correlation to the book, crappy freeze frame ending, and shifty side plots. The werewolf? please it looked like an overgrown badger. As for him directing a movie on Harry Potter, I'm thankful he was passed over, otherwise we'd be getting Harry Potter meets Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas... don't get me wrong I loved F and L but it doesn't quite stick with JK Rowling's writing style..

AnnaBlackwell i have to sy that im glad that this guy did not direct movies one and two becuz movie threewas not very true to the book :(

Leaky Cauldron:
cody: Gilliam is a sore loser and a loudmouth. Who cares what he thinks. We've heard all this before.

Angi: Thank goodness WB said no to Gillian, we don't need a Dudley Dursley directing a Harry Potter movie!

lauren: can someone say sour grapes?

He's certainly just jelus, alright.

Okay, so Terry Gilliam, the man who made Brazil and Twelve Monkeys, 'knws shhh about film making'? And is a Dudley Dursley, whatever that's supposed to mean in this context?

(If Mr Gilliam is keeping an irritating little brat with a Messiah complex stuffed in the cupboard under his stairs, I'd quite like to know about it)

Still, it's good to be clear on these points.

Wait - you mean some people actually think the first four Harry Potter movies didn't suck ? This is possibly even more batshit than the shipping.

"We were somewhere around Hogsmeade on the edge of the Forbidden Forest when the drugs began to take hold."

Yeah, I see no wrong here.

missed the whole point of it; they missed the magic of it .

Thank you, Mr. Gilliam, for articulating what I have been trying to say for a while. I just couldn't come up with the phrasing. Movies 1 and 2 felt...flat. Like someone turned the cameras on and people did stuff in front of them. PoA is, I think, the best of the films, because Cuaron actually went cinematic with the thing.

he is jealous because he is not getting a piece of the millions the movies are grossing

Yeah, because he really needs the millions on top of the other millions he already has.

The first two didn't have the right feel.

I still liked them but it wasn't what I pictured HP to be like and find that PoA to be the best one out of the four.

Terry Gilliam, shut up, just because you were in Monty Python doesn't mean you even know what your talking about.

Right. Directing some of the most memorable films ever and being nominated for Academy Awards in directing is just nothing.

DUI-King is just full of The Dumb, innhe?

Man, I totally agree with him. The first two movies were some of the shittiest I'd ever seen. They were passionless, artless pieces of shit.

Not that the last ones were any less artless, y'know, but at least they were entertaining and had a bit of kickiness to them.

The effort it took for me not to tell these people off-

Well, I'll just post what I would have said here:

Listen, you fuckers, just because you're generally ignorant about films does not give you the right to diss Terry motherfucking Gilliam. Rent BRAZIL, 12 MONKEYS, TIME BANDITS, maybe even BARON MUNCHAUSEN and we'll talk, ok? You should be grateful Gilliam was even vaguely interested at one point. And the next person to mention how much money the first two films made gets a knife in his eye.

Wanked a bit there m'self, sorry.

I did find myself agreeing with Terry mostly- I don't think the first two films were *bad*, but they were visually flat, overlong, and missing the spirit of the thing. (And a brief note to Chris Columbus: the skies in England are sometimes grey.) I actually think GOBLET OF FIRE was where they got it right, but PRISONER was an important step on the way.

This is actually the first I knew about JKR wanting Gilliam to direct, and actually getting the studio to at least hold talks, so that's definitely a point in her favor.

As if I needed another reason to love Terry Gilliam.

I really disliked the first two HP films. I wasn't entirely happy with PoA, but understood what Cuaron was trying to do as a filmmaker. In any event, PoA was a huge improvement over the first two, and I enjoyed GoF .

I still would have loved to see Terry Gilliam's interpretation of the Potterverse. Even if he had only directed the first one, he would at least have set a different tone for them, one that I think would have been more in keeping with what Rowling was doing in the books. Instead of the mind behind Brazil and Time Bandits, however, we got the one responsible for Home Alone. And Home Alone 2.

Terry Gillam directed 12 monkeys? Holy shit I wish he did the HP movies then.

Um, yes, because Harry Potter books are the best things in the world and aren't flawed at all. Therefore any movie based on them that happens to be crap is crap because it isn't exactly the same omgz0rz, and not because of the original material.

Also. "Based". "To make or form a foundation for". Implying that it's not supposed to be a carbon copy anyway.

Ahahahahha. I love the way that DUI_King seems to feel that Terry Gilliam went 'I was a Python boy therefore I know what I'm talking about and the first two HP movies were shite'. What does Monty Python have to do with it? The type of films they made cannot be compared to HP seeing as they are in to completely different categories.

But yes, I did like PoA the best. The first two were just filled with bad acting and horrible cheesy scenes and the fourth was too choppy and reminded of someone telling a story continually going 'and then...and then...and then...' Also, I really didn't like that it gave me the feeling that they would have rather titled it Harry Potter and Hermione Granger and the Goblet of Fire. There were a lot of things I really didn't like about PoA but I probably liked it the best out of the four.

Terry Gilliam, shut up, just because you were in Monty Python doesn't mean you even know what your talking about. The first two movies were the best movies in my opinion, what magic did they NOT capture?

Yeah Terry Gilliam! You were only part of some of the most lauded and successful comedy films of all time! And you've only directed some brilliant films! What the hell do you know about film making, and what makes a good film? Nothing, that's what! Leave film criticising to the people who really know what they're talking about! Random Harry Potter fans on messageboards!

Also, the first line of that quote really, really reminds me of Vicky Pollard.
