TDS Wank: It's not just for LJ anymore!
So Comedy Central now has message boards on their website, and against my better judgment, I decided to mosey on over and take a look at the board for The Daily Show. And, to no surprise, I found a somewhat lengthy thread entitled: It's official. John Stewart has SOLD OUT!

7steven has issues with the spelling of Jon's first name Jon Stewart's interview with former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft this past Wednesday:

John, John, John...

It's ironic that a "fake news show" has proven to be FAR MORE honest and complete and informative than ANY other news source in America. But man, you have been SUCH a flat out pussy lately. So, how was kissing Ashcroft's ass? "Seat of Heat???" You MUST be joking! You MUST rename it to the "Creampuff Seat." You wasted the Seat on the damn Mets/Cardinals game WITH JOHN FUCKING ASHCROFT??? And let's not forget James Baker's Seat of Heat question that you knew he wouldn't answer before you even asked it. Then you let him skate right out of it. Who gives a rat's ass if he likes Bush Sr. or Jr. more? They are both full of shit and EVERYONE in the WORLD knows it. Couldn't you have asked him something like "how do the Saudis funnel money into Bush hands?" Why do Seat of Heat questions have to be so stupid, irrelevant and pointless and meaningless? Do away with that filler segment. Your show used to mean something. Well, maybe Fox will pick it up after we stop watching it. My goodness, is your only mission to sell books for your guests? It's obvious that that's the only reason they come on your show and that the republicans have scripted segments. If they won't agree to open questioning, SCREW THEM! There are LOTS of other people out there trying to sell books. How about Noam Chomsky? Do you realize that your credibility is eroding AT LIGHT SPEED??? All that you have worked these 10 years for are getting pissed away in just a couple short months! You break my heart, John. What a betrayal! We trusted you and loved you and this is how you repay us??? Such a republican thing to do. WHAT a disappointment. :(

Some people agree.

antiradio: I completely agree with you. TDS has become a platform for the conservatives now, and they are not being challenged at all on the show. Ashcroft was given no challenges at all, and neither was Baker. And yet: when Lou Dobbs was on the show and made the point about the middle class going down for the count, Jon refered to him as Karl Marx. I think this is clear evidence that TDS has been co-opted by the conservatives and Stewart is going along with the program, but as you say in your post -- everyone can tell he's sold out big time. To let Ashcroft and Baker off the hook as he's done is just crimminal in my opinion. TDS RIP in my opinion. Something is very wrong with this show now.

JohnSmith3: Yes the "Karl Marx" comment coming from Stewart was a bad sign... what does he think he has to act like Colbert? Colbert is what doing a spoof pretending he is Drug Rush Limbo?... and that is comedy?

7steven: Yes, the Marx comment FURTHER eroded my faith in Jon. I am not sure where Jon stands at this point but ripping Marx is a BAD sign. Jon, I miss OBJECTIVE reporting. You WERE my man. Come on back, willya?

The first argument comes when turmeric replies to meloomis, and 7steven challenges hir TDS knowledge.

meloomis: I am 100% with you 7steven. (See my earlier post, just after the Ashcroft ass-kissing.) TDS was at one time a beacon in the darkness - something to encourage those of us who refused to be manipulated or intimidated by neo-con scum. Now it looks like Jon is itching for Tony Snow's job. I'm fed up.

turmeric: youre just missing something that did not exist. jon was not 'with' the anti-iraq-war protesters, he made fun of their methods.

you guys are all deluded about what the TDS was all about. i dont know where you got the idea, but its a bit silly to suddenly criticize jon for 'changing' when he didnt change ; you did.

7steven: Um, have you seen the Daily Show before??? Jon may have mocked RADICAL anti-war activists but if you believe that he is NOT anti-war himself, you have OBVIOUSLY not followed the show! I'm really not sure how you can say that the Ashcroft (and other recent big republican fish) segment wasn't a "change" from how Jon would rip his conservative guests' a new one in the past. ESPECIALLY A GUY THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH ATROCITIES AS DRAFTING THE PATRIOT ACT! No, the Jon from last year would have HOUNDED Ashcroft and asked such questions as "So, how did it feel to strip Americans of their basic civil liberties in the name of their own protection when there really isn't much of a threat?" And do you honestly believe that prisoners that are supposedly getting tortured are just being subjected to music that's not as loud as it is in the Daily Show studio? Well, I guess I'm torturing myself continuously in my own car on a daily basis. Why in the world are we concerned about this "torturing?" Maybe these poor Gitmo prisoners are being subjected to Continuous sex with Spearmint Rhino dancers and are being forced to drink a bottle of Dom Perignon every day while getting a Swedish massage by Lucy Liu.

7steve gets a little rambly there, but that's nothing compared to his response to mdrednek in this discussion:

RBTL: [....] He may not say what we want him to but he is who he is and there is no one else like him. It's true he did make Asscough squirm and the anti semetic thing slid right past me until I read about it here. Nice touch. I did not find the interview funny but that was because I was sitting there wanting to rip Asscough's throat out because he is a misreable excuse for a human being and therefore, Jon's subtlety was "over my head". Still, he is a VOICE, a force for our side. Without him most of you younguns probably wouldn't even know who the POTUS is let alone go out and vote. [....]

7steven: [....] yeah, Jon was a little subtle. But answer me this: If Ashcroft was on Bill Maher's show or being interveiwed by George Carlin (not that George has a show or would get to interview Ashcroft, but play along...) or even Colbert (in his passive aggressive/paragon-of-sarcasm way) do you think deeper questions would have been asked? I do. BOY do I!

mdrednek: I think that if Colbert had done the interview it would have been very different, but not better. Colbert's character would almost have to agree with Ashcroft, and that would have been painful to watch. Besides, Stephen is funny, but he has yet to master that which defines true diplomacy: the art of telling someone to go to Hell while sounding as though you are complimenting them. Stewart is a master. Pay closer attention.

7steven: Sorry, Jon just dropped the ball and pussied out. Plain and simple. Everyone screws up and this time it was Jon. It's getting a little frequent though. And I DO pay attention. Colbert would have busted out Ashcroft the way he did George W. Bush at the WHCAD.

mdrednek: You missed the part about diplomacy didn't you? Yes, Colbert was vicious, but it was obvious.

7steven: YEAH it was obvious! GOOD! As if George Fucking Bush doesn't NEED a kick in the nuts! Yeah, and the AP too! And all of Bush's cabinet and frigging EVERYBODY associated with or related to Bush in any way, shape or form. It would have been all the better if Colbert pulled out a Louisville Slugger and had his way with Bush. Diplomacy??? With that FUCK? Well, are you talking George Bush's kind of diplomacy or diplomacy? You want Colbert to be NICE to Bush? Why? So he can get invited to that dinner again? Who fucking cares if he goes to that dinner again if he has to be a sackless automaton like everyone else in there. Colbert stuck out like a sore thumb in an amputee village AND THAT IS GREAT! The only person there with nut sack enough to say what the WHOLE OF THE INTELLIGENT POPULATION OF THE PLANET WOULD LOVE TO SAY IF THEIR JOBS DIDN'T DEPEND ON IT or for fear of being shipped to Gitmo as a suspected terrorist (where I may wind up after this post)! My hat is SO off to Colbert for slamming Bush's damn crooked, mass-murdering, thieving, whoring ass to the wall! To hell with diplomacy for FUCKHEADS like that! Who gives a shit about guests returning? Fuck 'em if you can't ask what needs to be asked. Then you are just helping them sell books. I don't care if Ashcroft sells books! In fact, I hope NOBODY buys one of his books EVER! I ONLY want to see him get called on all the fucked up things he has done and how he has been SO destructive to this country and the WORLD! I don't give a shit if Ashcroft NEVER comes on TDS again if it's going to go the way it did last night. I'd rather watch whatever's on HBO or a DVD or read a book or have a martini. If HUGE ASSHOLES like Ashcroft, Baker, Rumsfeld get to come on such a BIG show like TDS to sell books, THEY SHOULD PAY THE PRICE! And they should KNOW IT! And if they aren't willing, FUCK 'EM! DON'T COME ON! Diplomacy??? NO, I DON'T get it! What the HELL are you talking about???

mdrednek doesn't reply. Another instance of long-windedness is here.

7steven receives more enthusastic agreement from one ALLINJackAzz. hotsteppa attempts to use Earth Logic, but 7steven rejects it.

ALLINJackAzz: After watching Stephen Colbert totally shred dubyah and his cronies right in their midst with truthiness. Then, watching Jon Stewart soft-balling, or rather, gettting balled and tea-bagged by dubyah's sycophants right on his show I started to lose faith in Jonny "Shitty" Stewart. But, having thoroughly enjoyed his show for a while I DVR'ed last night show with the former attorney general to see if he would redeem himself.
How painful, how disheartening that was. To watch a former outspoken new yorker reduced...yeah, just that...reduced. It's like he's waiting for FOX to offer him a job. LOSER.

Oh, how they grow old these...spineless regurgitators. Do New York a favor J. "Shitty" S. and at the end of your next show make an L hand-signal in front of your forehead and tell us how you are looking to retire to the bible belt. LOSER. And tell us how there's no cure to backbone-dissolving disease and the little millions you've made are not enough to pay for research. By the way, the lost of your backbone is showing in the lateral sag of your midriff. LOSER. Have the decency to retire when you start to kneel.

hotsteppa: You should be a news anchor, suave.

For as many times as it’s been done, comparing Stewart to Colbert as if Colbert is someone to be emulated has yet to prove any point or clarify anyone’s argument. Colbert’s methods are entirely different. Colbert mocks: he takes on the persona an exaggerated mirror image of the typical right wing conservative. As such, he begins to represent rep. Of course he’s going to be an asshole and hit below the belt on occasion – it’s part of the persona.

Stewart does not take on a persona, but he is still representational. Because of this, he has to be more careful about what he says and how he says it. He has no character to hide behind.

I’m not trying to excuse Stewart or justify his tactics. I’m just bringing something up that might be worth thinking about.

7steven: Why even have guests like Rummy, Ashcroft, Kissinger, Baker on the show if you're not going to ask meaningful, relevant questions? I don't know, do you care about anything in Ashcroft's life other than his tenure as Attorney General? I don't. I don't care if James Baker likes Bush 1 or Bush 2 better. What's the point of having guests of this caliber if they are only going to be asked, oh I don't know, "what's a better color, green or orange?" "Do you like pancakes or eggs better?" I mean, is it okay if the show turns into that? There are SO many many many other guests that would be SO much more fun for Jon to banter with. And I welcome that with open arms! HONESTLY! All I ask is that when a Baker, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft caliber guest is on, STAY RELEVANT and make the questions MATTER. You know, I honestly don't care whether any of these guys played a better golf game this week or last or if they even play golf. I don't want questions like that to be asked of guests of that ilk. Am I REALLY asking too much? It's beginning to feel like that. But I honestly don't think I am.

Heathercita calls troll: Hey....this 'voice' of 7steven sounds eerily familiarly sarcastic....are you COLBERT???

jervizjl laments the lack of funny. 7steven reminds hir the he is not a comedian like Jon, who-- according to everything else 7steven has said-- is supposed to be a reporter. Or something.

And, of course, 7steven brings up the "TDS: comedy or news show?" argument: Lainer raises a great point: Is The Daily Show "entertainment" or "hard news?" A strong argument can be made that it's a comedy show. It IS on the Comedy Central network. And jokes and parodies are everywhere. However, Jon's former unafraid "other side" reporting that exposed the "ugly" side of politics and illuminated the things that you will NEVER see on mainstream American news separated him from standard AP ass-kissers. Like it or not, Jon Stewart DID, in FACT, set the standard for present hard news reporting. Ironic? Yes. A "comedy show" that reported more honestly and completely than "professional news programs." So yes, I'd like to know, Jon, what IS your show? "Comedy" (because it's not funny anymore. Your "correspondents" suck!)? Or "news" (because now it's not a whole lot more insightful than network news)? Yeah, what exactly is The Daily Show?

A failing subversive conduit for the Liberal Revolution?

First wank posting. Yay?
