Yu-Gi-Oh! race wank. No, really.
Over at playthedamncard, [info]femensqueterror wonders what Malik's race is, saying

Okay, so like my friend and I had an argument about what the fucking hell Malik/Marik is. I say he is black (because I'm black), and she says that he is all Arab and crap. BUT ARAB PEOPLE DON'T HAVE BLONDE HAIRS!!! But neither do black people. Black males do sometimes have freaking tattoos on their faces under their eyes! I'm serious I have seen it.

and putting up a poll people to vote on Malik's race.

People respond. Some are shocked, some call troll and some don't understand why the post is offensive.

ETA: One of the mods has an explanation for the deletion of the original post. I don't suppose screencaps of said original post would be too much to hope for? Anyone? Bueller?

...I was under the impression that it is VERY difficult to determine the race of any given anime character.

Someone can say 'that guy is chinese' and I'll be like "....ooooohhh... really?" Honestly, I can't tell. Between the crazy hair colors and the large eyes, I just can never tell >.>;

Anyone else have this problem?

The thing with this character though, is that he is of a family who has protected the secrets of the Pharaos they served back in Ancient Egypt. They actually still live in Egypt IIRC. Not much room for uncertainty, there.

Especially since said character comes from a line of family who has protected the Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh's secrets for 3000 years, cutting themselves off from the rest of society until Malik goes nutso, kills dear daddy, escapes and starts his own criminal organization.

His backstory is only the most important plot point for the 2nd most important arc in the entire series so it makes perfect sense that people could over look it.

Yeah, and Japanese people don't have naturally green hair, either, so obviously the character in my icon isn't Japanese, despite, y'know, living in Japan and having a Japanese name.
