The Sims 2: Cesspool of wank
The Sims and it's cleverly titled sequel, The Sims 2 have a virbrant, lively, and wanky online community. The Sims 2 is very open-ended allowing users to download new homes, objects and clothing for their Sims, and this is where most of the wanks comes into play.

See, some sites are charging money for these downloads.

Charging money for downloads is a gray area legally. It's technically not legal, but EA turns a blind eye to it--and even exploits the idea of paysites by releasing Stuff Packs filled with only objects for Simmers to buy.

A group of Sim fans online finally had enough of this and with Pescado from More Awesome Than You taking charge, they formed: Paysites Must Be Destoryed where he has uploaded 'Booty' in the form of pay files from various pay sites online.

Natrually this does not go over well.

The biggest drama comes from LyricLee who despite decrying PMBD and those who download from it as "rotten
piece[s] of lowlife trash
" has also been logged as downloading almost the entire contents of the site. Later LyricLee will claim that this was to "drain" bandwidth. However, close inspection will note that the downloads span almost ten days--a few files at a time.

This thread goes into more detail when it comes to the LyricLee wank

A few other highlights:

" You are destroying all work from all people and it seems you don't give a fuck about that .
I think you are just FULL of it , but the sad thing is that you take a lot of people down with this fucking childish grudge or whatever you think it is .
"

HChangeri of Retail Sims says "So if anyone knows some good black hat hackers looking to have some fun, I'd love it if they could change the content of those files to some really nasty viruses. That way anyone who has the nerve to download stolen content gets a little instant karma for it. Ideally it would be nice to have the site hacked in its entirety but lets face it, the bastards will just pop up elsewhere.

Over on The Sims 2 Community links to PMBD are being deleted.

The hatemail/legal threats page is also not to be missed.

ETA: Oh noes, PMBD has caused Retail Sims to close down. HChangeri states: "What this group evidently doesn't have the mentality to grasp is that there is a third option which I am going to exercise - I will merely pull a John Galt. I am under no obligation to share anything I create with anyone. I will NOT have a group of low-life second-raters dictate the terms under which I can distribute what is MY WORK, MY EFFORT, and MY CREATIVITY nor will I allow them to dictate how I choose to spend or not spend MY MONEY. To this end, the contents of this website will be available only until December 1. After that point ALL sets will be permanently removed. I will delete all of my content from MTS2 and TSR. " Over-reacting much?

ETA 2: [info]ari wonderfully explains the background of Sims paysites.

ETA 3: "From this point on anybody who links to or mentions sites which promote theft of files from other creators will be automatically and summarily banned. You have been warned.

ERA 4: HGhanger explains her choice to pull her conecnt: "
I WILL NOT BE FORCED TO SHARE MY CONTENT ACCORDING TO THE WHIMS OF A SECOND-RATER. NOT NOW, NOT EVER. MY CONTENT CAN ONLY BE DISTRIBUTED ACCORDING TO MY WILL AND MY WILL ALONE
" Slow down there, Capslock Harry. She also goes on to state "If my husband did not have a high security government job this would not be a discussion and the files on that site would have been infected with a series of viruses designed to destroy a computer - not merely correctable by a format and reinstall."

On one hand, I'm very indignant at having to pay for content that sometimes doesn't even work (I have heaps of files that just don't show up properly in my programme - I get default hairdos and clothes and it shits me cause I want nice stuff too).

On the other hand, as someone that has spent a lot of time making skins and custom content, I can understand why people want to charge.

I think I'd be pissed if people were stealing my content, but you know, it's also kind of flattering that people would go to all that trouble.

All I've ever made and put on simsresources is a predictable Angie Jolie sim (No one can ever get her right, including myself, but I made a damned good effort) and a set of Poirot Sims. (I am such a sad little fangirl for the portly Belgian).

Being the impoverished type I only recently acquired a puter strong enough to handle Sims 2, and the first thing I got for it ... yeah. Haven't downloaded any extras for it yet but with Sims 1 I never went near the pay sites - largely due to afore-mentioned poverty plus well-founded paranoia about money transactions over the Net.

Unfortunately since my original characters were somewhat promiscuous, all my families are now named either "Santos" or "Lyman" which is just boring. Is there a hack/cheat anywhere I can use to change their names?

It's technically not legal, but EA turns a blind eye to it

More detailled:

back in the early days of Sims1, bandwidth was not as easy to come by as it is today. So sites with lots of/very popular custom content were rather expensive to run. Eventually, they seem to have contacted Maxis, and Maxis, bless their ignorant hearts, said that it was ok to charge for the bandwidth costs - but not, of course, for the custom content itself.

Considering that the guy who runs TSR is most definitly living from his income he gets from the site, you can imagine how close the community sticks to this. There's 2 or 3 other sites where the owners have said that they're living on the money they make from creating sims2 CC.

JMP's argument is that he's offering the stuff from his site, so he is saving the sites he gets the stuff from bandwidth, and since they should only be charging for the bandwidth cost...

I'm vastly amused at hte reactions at MTS2, because I remember back in 2004, when Sims2 came out, MTS2 had *HUGE* ant-TSR threads, because TSR was an EVIL EVIL paysite, and I think they were even urging Quaxi, who created SimPE, the main program that is used for CC creation, to forbid people to use it to create pay-site stuff.

Paysites have been wanky as hell since Sims1. AFAIK, Sims is the only computer game where people charge for add-ons, at least on a scale this large.

(and for all the Sims2 players who haven't done so: MATY, JMP's site, offers stuff by JMP and TwoJeffs that is rather essential, because Maxis now belongs to EA, and the game comes with many many bugs, and they have the necessary fixes)

This has nothing to do with anything except for the Sims-

When I had The Sims (original version) I would create people and stuff and then kill the people. I had a nice graveyard out back of my house full of people that I had drown in the pool by taking out the ladder and starved to death by taking doors out of rooms.

What? I like playing God.

As for the wank- wow.

Geez people, chill. Clearly, what you need to do is make sims of these dreadful pirates, put them in a small room with no doors, surround them with flamingos and cheap chairs and give them a roaring fireplace. That's a much better way to let out your anger.

Or you could starve them. Or drown them. I just like the crazy running around in circles and fruitless waving.

Oooh, I remember hunting for custom stuff when they first started charging and being very annoyed about it. Mostly because I'd had it before, then got a new computer and wanted the custom stuff again and found I had to go get it off the old PC because aftyer buying it, I was too poor for downloads.
I just figure if you want paying for it, go work for EA. Then again, I'm not a very nice person...

Recent Sims 2 wank that isn't 'Pets' related? Say it ain't so!
[info]stupidpetowners has really let me down. I was expecting some serious whining over the content of the 'Pets' expansion pack. What with the fact you can breed the cats/dogs and sell them to neighbors and all.

I'm not really too big on the look of my Sims so much as the actual playing out of their lives, so I've never invested in one of the pay download sites. It never occurred to me the whole concept was legally sketchy. Huh.

The way these paysite owners can stop people from stealing their creations is not to publicize them. Keep the shit to themselves and only give them to those they may want to give them too. Yes, that doesn't make them one freakin dime, but they don't have to worry about people like me running over to PMBD to get what I want for free.

This will also teach those that want custom items to learn to make them themselves.

That'll learn them! Dammit!
