On Joystiq, a gaming blog, Vladmir Cole gets his review Wii and blogs his roomie's commentary while he was unpacking and using it. The word "faggy" is used.

Minutes later, all wank breaks loose. A lot of it about inappropriate use of the word "faggy". Enjoy.

I don't use the phrase "That's so gay," but I could totally understand the appeal of saying "faggy" over gay. It's got so much more shock-value to it. That said, hi, what he says in the privacy of his own home may not always be the correct thing to print on such a well-trafficked website, and one should always take his readers into consideration before publishing anything like that.

I myself are more put off by the use of the word "retarded," but we already knew that the roommate wasn't the most well-spoken person, so we should only expect something of that calibre.

Saw this on NeoGAF - though par the course, opinions are divided between whether using homosexual slurs makes a person an asshole and whether calling someone an asshole indicates console bias. *

For example, user '----' has this to say:
In common language and slang calling something faggy or queer is not at all considered the same as using racial slurs like nigger and chink. You're not going to lose your job in an office environment for calling something faggy or queer.

I've never heard my mom use a bad word in her life and even she refers to some things and behaviors as gay or faggy. People trying to say faggy is as bad as the word nigger are really stretching big time. Sure you could substitute a more politically correct description like effeminate or uncool in certain situations, but realistically speaking most people don't do that in common slang.

I actually went and read the whole post and ... wow. I gotta say, can you imagine taking 15 or so minutes of your own regular life - say you just got a toaster oven or a new iPod and are opening it and checking it out - and having what you say transcribed then dissected by a bunch of strangers? Sheesh. Nothing said there was offensive (mind you, it also wasn't very interesting, but I'm not a gamer). It was a couple of regular joes (and a joanne, I guess) in their own home/room yakking. Everyone who hasn't at some point, among pals, casually said something stupid or mildly offensive raise your hands and I'll count. Zero. Like I thought.
