Happy Feet is an Evil Propaganda Movie.
Yes, you read that correctly, but let me repeat it:

Happy Feet is an Evil Propaganda Movie

Well what if I were to tell you that the overall metaphor, that the overall themes of Happy Feet are that of A) there is nothing wrong with individuality, that society can actually benefit from it, B) the ecological devastation unknowingly caused by man on the environment and the need to stop it, C) the evils of keeping animals in captivity, D) it being okay to defy your elders for the sake of “the truth” and, oh yeah, E) The evils of religion. Wait, what? Back up a second. Did I read that right? The…evils…of religion?

As expected, not everyone agrees.

I know he said it wasn't a review, so let it be said that was one of the most ridiculous tirades against a film that I've ever seen. Overreacting much? I think what I loved most was that he seemed to think that a) he was the only one who picked up on this stuff [if he's right about one thing, it's that the messages are not overly subtle], but more importantly b) that these messages were inherently bad. *overfishes in his name*

I can't remember what the particular Jurisimprudence Law is called, but somewhere in the comments he pulls the "People are supportive of me and my position in email!" trick, which is amusing. There's also got to be a law for when people play the "I bet the people disagreeing with me haven't seen the movie" card, because bitch, plz. I saw it and disagree, oh noez!

How old is this guy, anyway? His responses in the comment section lead me to believe he is roughly twelve.

Ehh, technically EVERY FILM is propaganda, inasmuch as the creators put their personal bias into their story. [/wank]

And I fail to see what's wrong with being an individual. I think this person would be the kind of person that, if they brush with peppermint-flavored toothpaste, would SHIT themselves if they found out someone else used cinnamon.

The OP said that "kids are smart."

And that's true. In fact, kids are probably smart enough to figure out that the "aliens" are in fact humans, and that this isn't a statement about religion at all.

Which ultimately means that kids are smarter than this reviewer.

I tried to get my kid to go see this movie, because I didn't think it would bother her that she is way older than the target audience, and she just gave me this look and said "Mommy, I hate to tell you this, but penguins can't dance."

(Presumably she would have the same perspective on the existence of a Great Penguin in the Sky, but maybe I shouldn't take any chances!)

She wants to see "Shut Up and Sing," even though it is rated R, because she really admires the Dixie Chicks. So I guess I'll pick that over some terrible propagranda about dancing penguins.

You know, it's so funny that as far as the apparent theme of this movie is concerned, this guy isn't actually far off. The batshit is all in the reaction. Because really, the jabs at organized religion in the film are not subtle. At one point one of the elders calls dancing "pagan" in the midst of an angry tirade. That was a definite double-take moment for me.

The difference is, I liked the theme and found it to be particularly relevant and important at this point in American society. This guy is just fucking insane. Besides, it's not like kids are going to make the connection. They're going to get the idea that yeah, it's okay to be different, but even though they're smart they're not that sophisticated. In any case, I doubt they'll have time to put together any evil, antiestablishment unamerican thoughts during the film with the entire second half being the absolute headtrip that it is.

Having not seen the film, I can only say BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

But never dangerous. Never offensive. Because those are words I reserve for very special films that really, truly, shatter the barrier of what is appropriate in a kids film. Those are words I reserve for films like Happy Feet.

I could have handled grisly murders! I could have handled malevolent dictators glorying in the degredation and misery of the common man! I could have handled cannibalism, facism, mass extinction, torrid cross-species sex! But I WILL NOT CONDONE DANCING PENGUINS!

And stories have always, first and foremost, been great metaphors.

No SHIT! Srsly?

I'm just busy giggling at his review of The Ant Bully.

All of the ant and wasp designs look like they're straight out of a Sci-fi movie -- with each ant distinctive and alien, complete with tribal tattoos, and wasps that look like badass Decepticon bugs.

I take it he's never heard of Waspinator, the most cuddly doof ever to be blown up in every single episode.

*thoughts on ant yaoi--I mean, yuri* Personally, I thought it was rather intriguing once you got past the toilet humor. It was a hell of a lot better than "A Bug's Life" and its dark cousin "Antz" (it's spelled with a Z, you moron), choosing to demonstrate a completely alien society instead of making a parody of humans. There were differing individuals (such as an ant wizard, which was pretty cool in my eyes), but they also showed the complete and peaceful unity of the colony instead of making everyone else the evil enforces of conformity. And they actually had the queen as this big-ass creature instead of the protagonist's love interest, which quite satisfied me.

Is he just bothered by the fact that the movie suggests that you not blindly follow authority (like religion or your parents). Because that was the message I got. Not 'your parents are always wrong and there is no God' but 'your parents can be wrong sometimes and your preacher might be too so think for yourself a little'. He says it himself, "So my advice to those of you who are taking your kids anyway, prepare yourself for some questions. Be ready to explain the difference between faith and dogma..." Oh no. heaven forbid you'll have to answer a kid's questions. I'm not a parent, but isn't them asking questions so you can answer it kind of a good thing? Granted, you may get ones you can't answer, but they're eventually going to have to figure out that you don't know everything.

Does this mean Footloose (which has A, D & E from his list) began the slow decline of civilization, and Happy Feet continues the trend? I had no idea movies could be so destructive.

I thought it was the Footloose soundtrack that was Pure Evil.

Except Holding Out for a Hero. Love it!
