Ban-wave hits WoW US servers.
Once upon a time, there was an online game called World of Warcraft. In this fantastic game, the individual players could play, and fight and play and fight to their little hearts content, but, said the evil overlord Blizzard, you must not use bots to increase your character-level or to get more gold. All the players agreed to this, and because the evil overlord was a suspicious bastard, he made them all sign a pact before they could play and fight, and play and fight, to make sure everyone knew this.

Now, not everyone in the happy kingdom of WoW wanted to spend time gaining levels or gold the long and hard way, and these crafty little beavers created bots, and sold them to the other players.

These other players were not doing anything wrong, they said when caught, they had paid for the bot and now, because the evil overlord was being a bastard, they were all banned!

The were outcries of oppression, screams of unfairness and even a few tears, in the not-so-happy-anymore kingdom of WoW.

It all started with glidez4lyfe’s post:

Caught the ban hammer in the teeth today. Lost two accounts that between them had 6 level 60s (each on its own realm). Neither account was linked to the other by billing info and both of them were paid via game cards.

I don't think that I was reported by a player since I only bot these accounts in instances (generally Scarlet Monastary). I figured that was pretty safe since there's zero chance of being stumbled upon by other players. I've got both the accounts hooked up with remote monitoring software and never got any whispers or alarms from other players or GMs.
[…] I'm going to be laying off the Glider for a bit, at least until I can figure out what exactly gave me away.

And the reactions to the ban-wave keeps pouring in :

Kiloas : same thing here. never Gm, never made a ticket, etc. In an instance and bam. Toast

Chemokenny : yep banned today, no warning at all

Teresa : Just banned to at 9:45pm central time....I was in ubrs and had not botted today.

drag00n : add me to the list, was in AB when i got hit

And the list goes on. The first few comments are pretty low-key and reasonable, then … the unfairness of it all hits the banned players:

Drag00n : this is not a wave, this is total annihilation

Dawn : Just got banned...yes, I was using glider, but not in a nooby way.

N0sp00ne : I'm trying to get my account unbanned but if they have proofs of my program using. I can be sure I will not have it back. It pisses me off. I paid for glider like one week ago. I did not get for my money. I heard this was supposed to be almost undetectable if you are precaucious and the dude was supposed to upgrade his bot constantly. If someone know something to do about it plz tell me.

Stevie_wonderz : ROFLMAO this is nucking futs... I hadn't used my glider in at least 4 weeks and bam banned. :( RIP 35k gold :(
lolol at this rate blizzard isn't gonna have any suscribers left for WoW

Drag00n : they probably just lost a few thousand paying subscribers with this ban wave

Brom : I haven't botted for 6 days. 6 days ago I got a temporary ban (I was fishbotting). So... I had a 60 on the account so I decided my botting days were over on that account. 3 Days later (today) I was in AV and Bam, banned and received an email. I didnt TOUCH glider on ANY accounts for over 6 days. And the email specifically stated 3rd party software, and I was using NOTHING that could be considered against the Terms of Use. Hate to say it, but I believe its detectable.

Garfieldslaw : Been gliding for a long time now, on different accounts, Never EVER leave my accounts unsupervised ever. I watch them even adding little things in here and there that glider wouldn't do like using extra stuff on other bars etc... I got banned today while NOT gliding. I'm pissed as a MF'er. Fuck them.

Ringam : i think no matter wtf we do now guys we r geting shut down O_O.......i havent bot in like 2-3 munths and boom baned

Theywillgetyou : Thanks Glider, lost 3 months of my life.

Derallde : DAMN BLizard, I dono about anyone else but my subscription just renewed on the 13th so thats 15 buck that blizard just stole from me

Kmfdm4 : Damn, i got the big old ugly banstick along with my friend. Damn Blizzard. y can they just leave us alone. its not like we are teleporting across the map and shit.

Humour

HMwow : Just think about how many GM's are really really happy now.

GM 1: "HAI LOL, LOOK I JUST BANNED 60 PPL IN ONE MOUSE CLICK"

GM 2: " HEH HEH, **SNORT** I BANNED 500 PPL WHOSE NAMES STARTED WITH THE LETTER C, LOLZ"

Conspiracies:

Grave : My 2 friends were also banned, one of which has NEVER botted. I think they're targetting people who even discuss botting.

And tears:

Carduchi : No warning nothing I was just sitting there drinking ang got disconnected. Tried to log back on and ummmm I getting a little choked up here sorry guys I apologize for the tears, No im not a pussy!! This was my favorite acct.

This goes on for 48 pages so far, and on page 12, Okito mentions the possibility of the Bot-programmer /distributor selling the player-IP’s to Blizzard.

ETA: Fixed the funky problem with the link to page 12

ETA2: More links to wanky behaviour, collected by the lovely [info]narcissam. here and here

Uhm.

So, they break the rules and are then angry when they get banned? Since I'm no WoW-player, mebbe I'm missing something but why?

Isn't it a bit like taking a free ride on public communication? You just sit tight and hope you don't get caught but if you do - well bummer. But you suck it up

I love all the people talking about how they hadn't botted in X days. Like that makes them innocent.

What possible reason could people have for having more than one account. . .I mean, it's not like Blizzard has a character limits.

Did you break any of the rules?

The sympathy - it just does not flow today. I guess my experiences with the bot-using bastards on Diablo II's battlenet* must have jaded my soul to the plight of these unhappy rule-breakers.

Although if Blizzard is making an effort to kick the bot-users off their servers, I guess I might actually look into the game. My friends have been raving about it for weeks.

*not that battlenet sucked just because of the bot-using players. i could go on and on about the misogynistic teenage boys, but it'd be messy, and nobody cares.

Paying real money for a program to make you fake-good in a virtual world. ...I see.

I'm also surprised the druid!wank hasn't hit f_w yet. But maybe that's because they took the whole druid server down?

You know, I'm going to be honest, spending all your time running around doing mini battles and quests just to up your level and gold so you can have some real fun (I've never played WoW so this is all straight video game RPG experiece, for all I know WoW doesn't work like this) is a long pain in the ass. I admit it, hence the reason I use walkthroughs and guides. But to whine and complain that they were banned for technically cheating, sure it stings guys but suck it up and deal with it.

I took a look at the forum and some of the best stuff is in other threads.

ATTENTION: All disgruntled Blizzard employees.... Offers to pay Blizzard employees for info.

NOW BLIZZ IS BANNING IF YOU HAD FRIENDS WHO GLIDE - Someone makes up a letter from Blizzard.

It's still illegal. FTC can help. Time to call in the Federal Trade Comission.

Class action... When in doubt, sue.

You Won't Believe This has the absolute best wank of them all.

Of course I can go on without playing a year.

I'm 21 years old, i work full-time. I have a very supportive family that lives close by. I have lots of other things I do.

Do you want to call me on my cell phone? Do you REALLY want to get to know me?

I tell you this, I will make contact with you off of these forums if you wish, I will send you my pictures, I'll show you what I look like, I am very attractive, I have a lot of friends, I make a good living, and I like to Game. Specifically gaming, WoW. Others? Totally. I play with friends on other games, PC games, anything.

Addicted? No. Bugged by something odd that happened in WoW? yes.

If you want to get in contact with me regarding all of this, so you can get to know who I am, i will even meet you in real life if you want to discuss personal matters.

I swear to you. Otherwise, please keep it out of the forums ok? You don't know anything about anyone.

Oh, and there's the public allowed forum where the non-botters are fighting with the botters. this thread's loads of fun:

Message to the nonbotters

People of "Legitiment" play, you may look down upon us. Step on us when we are down, but we will not give. You are no different then us, selling your gold on websites. Selling your 60, T2 characters on ebay. Buying gold\items from websites. Even the occasional legitiment china farmer that complains of bots. You all have something in common with us, a violation of the EULA. You would fight any of these accusations, and so will we.

3% of WoW players have yet to break the EULA in one way or another.

Eh, I PvP'd with a guy who got his characters leveled occasionally and bought gold, and even his opinion was that using Glider was very, very risky. Some character leveling services just use it, apparently, instead of having someone playing your character for you--and that brings down the banhammer pretty fast.

I feel bad for everyone who lost money, but really, they should've seen it coming.

This is interesting that there's been a crackdown, though. I wonder how Blizzard detected all these people at once, or if the bot-maker really did distribute IP's? Do they ban in waves? I know that people often whine on the forums about repeatedly reported bots that don't seem to have anything done about them.

What amazes me is that they're so surprised they got caught. I have no idea how this actually works, but if I were Blizzard....

I'd get a couple of employees to go out and buy these bots (which aren't hard to find) take 'em apart, figure out how they work, figure out how to detect 'em and [wham].

Or, alternately, get my corporate lawyer to buy a bot and send the guy a CnD and the cops by return of post and offer to drop all charges for making money off their product in return for a client list... and then sit and sell the bot myself for a few months and then ban 'em all.

... because I'm a sadist like that.

They act like they're victims because they got caught cheating. That's so cute!

Okito mentions the possibility of the Bot-programmer /distributor selling the player-IP’s to Blizzard.

That's genius. Charge cheaters money and then fuck them over. If I could program, I would totally do that!
