when sore losers whine
Yesterday, out of boredom and a need to see what other people in the fanart community are doing lately, I joined a blend challenge community on LJ. On that day, the mod was announcing the winners of last week's challenge. Mixed among the congrats and happy winners was a sudden gripe that the mod was playing favorites. This leads to the boyfriend of one of the losers jumping in.

Finally, out of frustration, the mod posts a reply which creates further finger pointing.

This com might get as wanky as The Photochallenge Community if they're not careful...

... yay!

On a side note, I'm just showing off my new icon! Ooooh... shiney...

LOL, yesh, I had seen you here on some much much older wank--you commented something about Digimon and I was, 'Naw, this can't be the same--OMGWTFSMALLWORLD it is!'

I haven't seen you post lately, so I wasn't sure you were still about. >D

Anyway, *boggles* how can people not like Brian/Mikey?

Cause apparently Brian/Justin is cuter. In all honesty, Justin as a character annoys me, which makes it hard for me to swallow that coupling. But I haven't seen beyond first season before falling out of the series...

Blech. I don't think Justin's cute at all, and besides, I have a "best friends who fall in love" kink. :p

Like she isn't there already?

I mean, GOD. At least Ellen had time to reach the point of wankery that this chick has. On the other side, I think it's a bit early to be declaring favorites--at least give it five contests.

Whoa. ::hands around chill pills to the entire community::

I'm sensing wank on both sides, as the mod gets her authority challenged and overreacts while the users themselves complain via comments but don't actually take an active stance in talking to the mod about it until it gets wanktastic.

Personally, I think both sides have good points (winners of last week can't win next week/why should we punish winners for being talented?) but both points are presented with such an aura of wank that I just want to stamp an X on both of them and go, 'WRONG! Try again!'

Wanking does induce blindness. O.o;

As an aside, I had no idea what a 'blending' community was till this. ::puts on plebe hat:: You can tell I don't own a LJ.

Blending or collage fanart that I've become strangely addicted to doing of late and sort of killing all my writing muses at the moment. Basically, they take images and create digital art with the use of photoshop brushes, filters and layer effects. It's not an LJ thing. Started with the X-Files fanart community until the show went down hill and most switched to BTVS. Now, most of these guys branched out to SG-1 and Alias with the odd smaller film things. There are lots of sites that hold challenges and people win by votes (example: Celebrating Uniqueness is the most popular). I guess someone thought to hold a challenge at LJ land and instead of members voting for the winners, the mod chooses...and there lies the problem. But yeah...the wank on top of the wank. *shakes head*

I have been enlightened. I've had brushes with it when I was briefly in the wrestling fandom, and I always wondered what to call it--calling it 'fanart' just seems ... off-kilter somehow, because the fandoms I'm in (all that anime and game schtuff) tends to use it to refer to hand-drawn art mimicking the original stuff or whatnot. So whenever I saw 'fanart' in the wrestling fandom, I kept reacting as if they were drawn pieces of artwork. (There aren't many in the wrestling fandom, which is why I kept squeeing in glee, before finding out that it's manipulated images).

But thank you for enlightening me. You learn something new everyday!

Much of the problem, especially since the mod is a single person, but she does have a 'viewer's choice' or whatever type award too. However, most people don't consider the popular vote to be as important as the electoral.

... waitaminute...

Oh yeah...the anime/gaming fandom doesn't think this is considered fanart or art at all. I wish I still had that bit of wank. It was on some anime art board my friend frequents.

Really? That's great! >D I guess collages aren't considered 'art' by traditionalists, and it's definitely not 'fanart' because, well, it's not made by a fan!

... or something.

Personally, I can say that it did surprise me to see 'fanart' applied to blending art, but only cause I was always used to it being used on hand-drawn stuff--I had no outside experience with fandoms that also used it synonymously with blending art. So when I clicked on 'fanart' and saw collages and manipulated images, I was like, 'waitaminute...' I've heard of similar reactions from friends introduced into the wrestling fandom.

Damn, I wish you did have that link, I'd like to see the 'reasoning' behind why blending related artwork isn't 'art' or 'fanart.' I'm pretty sure a lot of these blended photos that people use for their slash items aren't 'official.' ::SNRK::

But artists are wanky by default.

I'm actually the opposite--I've never seen 'fanart' applied to anything but blending/collages, since I mostly travel in TV fandoms (Smallville, Buffy). And why it wouldn't be considered art, I have no idea--the last time I checked, photography (including Photoshopping) was a branch of art. Unless the art department at my college is on crack.

The gaming/anime fandom thinks any art that is not using the traditional mediums is not art. I mean, yeah...they use photoshop/illustrator to apply color, etc but they begin with pen to paper drawing then scan it to a computer to further do their thing. They don't consider collages/blends real art.

I wonder if it's more that in anime fandom, 'Shopping is kind of pointless when everybody's already got the base images in one form or another. Also, it's just as easy (or easier) to draw the picture you want as it is to go to the effort of a really good photo collage.

I think the thing is a lot of the people that are into anime fanart (and I get this off my friend and his group of friends so I could be overgeneralizing) is they want to do their own manga. So, they sit and draw. As opposed to the tv/film fandoms. A lot of them want to be graphic artists.

I think drawing is pretty hard. I don't knock them because I'm a stick figure drawer. I just think art is art. No matter what media you use.

Oh, I don't disagree, believe me. You've got two different groups with (severely generalizing here) different skill sets.

Yeah....Artists are wanky. *smirk*

I didn't know about this side of fandom until last year. I had friends in the anime/gaming fandom and all they did was "pen to paper" fanart. But then one of my friends got me photoshop and I was fooling about with it, posted something on my site. And someone emailed me to ask if I do X-files fanart. Totally confused until I met someone on LJ who does BTVS collage work. Now, I'm totally sucked into this side of fandom. I think it's only found in tv and movie fandoms because they can get screen caps and just work with that. Unlike the anime world where you really do rely on the drawings.

Unlike the anime world where you really do rely on the drawings.

I think a lot of why most of anime 'fanarts' are actually drawings is because of just that--the medium itself starts as a drawing. The creator is an artist-of-the-pencil-kind. It tends to pull a lot of the 'arteest' sorts in, people who, like you noted before, want to do their own comic or illustrations or whatnot. This is probably why Japanese webpages for anime series are usually comprised more of the illustrated fanart sorts than, say, your fic writing. (And next-to-none of the collage works--the Japanese webmasters are kinda weird about 'official' images--non-artist page often won't have any images at all.)

Meanwhile, the TV/music/book fandoms are based off a medium that, while no less visual, starts life a little differently (usually written, yeah?). And while collage fanart is popular, I notice that these fandoms seem to be more fic-based than any other fan-media. I'm not sure if it's cause of the lack of images, or that drawing for these fandoms require a huge degree of ability to actually make the picture look like the actors, or whatnot, but I think the differences between these sides come from mainly just the original product itself.

Still doesn't make any side less of an artform, though. ^_^
