Big Damn Wankers
Flanvention 2 was supposed to be a pretty shiny shindig, offering Firefly fans a small number of attendees to the con a chance to spend some fairly close time with many of the stars of the show.

At hundreds of dollars per ticket (I looked up the price a couple of weeks ago, but can't remember what they were going for exactly) you'd expect to be able to sleep in the same bed as the guests, or at least, say, have the con actually happen.

And that's where you'd be wrong.

On November 28th, there were announcements that Booser Events was in some financial trouble, and that Flan2 might not happen, but people were quickly assured that of course everything was okay, they'd secured a loan, and Flan2 was a go.

One hour before the con was supposed to start, it poofed, and all wank broke out. There were circumstances beyond their control, so they had to cancel. People just aren't buying it, though. We're treated to a lecture on the evils of for-profit cons, while others are confused over whether Flan2 is fan run or not.

And some people are just lost and confused. Like everyone on planes right now, not knowing they're not attending a con this weekend. Or the hotel.

It's more horror-inspiring than wanky right now, since most of these people have legitimate concerns, but the wank is spreading as it sinks in...

edit: Here, have a friendly helping of context. If you dare.

Revenge of the edit: [info]sidhaethe comes to the rescue with more info, including correct prices. "The total ticket price wasn't $500, no. There were items sold separately that added up, though; if you wanted a weekend pass, that was $225; a cocktail party ticket was $75, banquet ticket another $125, photo ops running $50-75, etc. etc."

I'd *still* want full body massages from the guests at those prices.

There is also the issue of, for example, the $5000 lifetime ticket holders. They aren't part of the Flan purchasers, technically, but they need refunding if it's bust.

I'm sorry, but let me channel [info]rotten_fish for a moment and say:

Ahahahahhaa hahahHAHAAHA hahahaah!

Seriously, LIFETIME TICKETS to a con that hasn't even proven itself viable yet ONCE???

*collapses on the floor with laughter, finding the one glimmer of truly absurd (albeit dark) humor in this otherwise bleak tale of dashed expectations and possible large-scale financial fraud*

Disturbingly reminiscent of that other con wank, ages back. The VB one, I think. I wonder if this will live as long.

I'm impressed at all the legal talk going on there. These people are very determined to get their money back. I'm curious about what happened last week, that made peole start doubting it was going to happen.

Also, Adam Baldwin rocks for turning up anyway (and apparently trying to convince other stars to do the same).

Heh, I was just coming over from Whedonesque to see if it had been reported yet. Good ol' F_W.

I'm staying far, far out of it myself. People are pissed, and justifiably so, but you just know in a minute someone's going to take it just that oooone step over the line, then we'll have splooge all over everything. And I just washed these jeans.

I'll just sit in the "Tony Head to be in Sweeney Todd" thread and be happy I'm not all that obsessive over Firefly.

So much love for Adam Baldwin though.

I have to admit, the whole VB thing was the first thing I thought of when I encountered this.

I've never been a fan of for-profit conventions; I only attended one in my entire life and it was a glorious waste of time, money and effort. Except I got snogged by Tom Baker. Twice. That was cool. But everything else sucked.

Mad props for Adam Baldwin for showing up anyway. That man deserves sainthood.

More links that might help with context:

First rumblings of discontent after the first "start planning for a cancellation" notice; more discontent about halfway down the page here. The confusion about the first warning is also here on Whedonesque. Admidst all the confusion, people defend BE, only to have to eat those words later.

There's a scare regarding cancellation on the 7th, but people are told to disregard; then, the cancellation notice comes down. The Browncoats Back-Up Bash pulls itself back together at the last minute and starts working on giving everybody who's there or still coming something for their time and trouble. In addition to the venting over on Whedonesque, a community called BE_victims has been formed to give people a place to vent/start to gather the wagons/try to figure out what went wrong and what should be next.

I seriously love how sweet Adam Baldwin is for coming and encouraging the other guests to come as planned. Class act. I'm not really involved in fandom, but it makes me love Firefly just a bit more to know the actors are good people.

This calls for a resounding chorus of the Hero of Canton.

OMG HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I saw the con mentioned earlier today online, but I had no idea there would be asshattery on a scale like this.

I wish I didn't feel so bad for the con attendees; my "Told you so!" banner could use a good airing-out.

But Adam Baldwin and Mark Sheppard are truly two of the classiest guys in the world. Mad, mad love to both of them.

If I sign up for anything called "Flanvention," it better involve custard or Southern Gothic short stories.

As much as the fact that they got cheated out of money sucks. ARE THEY INSANE? I'm a student! So I'll use half my financial aid money - hundreds of dollars - for a convention? What the hell?

I want to feel sorry for them. I do. But my brain is going "Yeah, I feel sorry for you, but half your financial aid? You're an idiot."

Would this also be a good time to ask why people would pay that much for just convention attendance? I've attended like 20, and I think the most I paid was like $40 for a weekend, if I paid at all.
