Big Damn Wankers
Flanvention 2 was supposed to be a pretty shiny shindig, offering Firefly fans a small number of attendees to the con a chance to spend some fairly close time with many of the stars of the show.

At hundreds of dollars per ticket (I looked up the price a couple of weeks ago, but can't remember what they were going for exactly) you'd expect to be able to sleep in the same bed as the guests, or at least, say, have the con actually happen.

And that's where you'd be wrong.

On November 28th, there were announcements that Booser Events was in some financial trouble, and that Flan2 might not happen, but people were quickly assured that of course everything was okay, they'd secured a loan, and Flan2 was a go.

One hour before the con was supposed to start, it poofed, and all wank broke out. There were circumstances beyond their control, so they had to cancel. People just aren't buying it, though. We're treated to a lecture on the evils of for-profit cons, while others are confused over whether Flan2 is fan run or not.

And some people are just lost and confused. Like everyone on planes right now, not knowing they're not attending a con this weekend. Or the hotel.

It's more horror-inspiring than wanky right now, since most of these people have legitimate concerns, but the wank is spreading as it sinks in...

edit: Here, have a friendly helping of context. If you dare.

Revenge of the edit: [info]sidhaethe comes to the rescue with more info, including correct prices. "The total ticket price wasn't $500, no. There were items sold separately that added up, though; if you wanted a weekend pass, that was $225; a cocktail party ticket was $75, banquet ticket another $125, photo ops running $50-75, etc. etc."

I'd *still* want full body massages from the guests at those prices.

I'm trying to point and laugh at this wank appropriately, but I'm mostly distracted and happily amused by the news that it wasn't just Adam Baldwin who showed up for the convention in spite of the cancellation.

Love for Adam, yes. And also for Nathan and Alan and Jonathan and Mark and Christina.

And then some more for Alan because dude it's Wash and I *heart* him.

Browncoats are both terrifying and adorable.

That is the most adorable thing I've heard in simply ages.

Wow, that's awesome.

Almost makes me wish I was actually in Firefly fandom, despite loving it so much. (It's the only thing I have liked so much, I've made sure to stay away from the fandom, so it can't be ruined.)

Kinda like how my friends and I made a blood pact never to look for fic for either The Princess Bride or Back to the Future?

...man, I can't even imagine fanfic for The Princess Bride...

(And I am not going to go looking!)

The fandom is actually relatively sane as a unit, though I've never been all that involved. I think pretty much every time in the past they've gotten wanky at all it's been of the "Browncoats need to chill the hell out because not everyone loves their show" variety. Within the fandom itself, there's relatively little crazy - I mean, I haven't seen shipwars or drama over fic or favorite characters or episode content or whether there should be another movie, etc, etc.

Though the number of River/Jayne shippers just blows my mind a bit.

It's more of a "don't want to look at a fic, it will be ruined" than a "oh no the batshit will ruin it" sort of attitude I have.

Although I was beyond happy the movie got made, I didn't enjoy it completely, and I still don't know whether I want to look at the comics.

I'm the same way about FF7's psychotic sequels, though I've read fic for it which didn't bother me.

I highly recommend the comics. All they really amount to is another episode of the show, and you get the missing bits of Inara's departure and the Blue Hands storylines.

Is there any room in the fandom left?
(Might have to watch the show now, if it's got actors that cool.)

Those guys are made of awesome.

Nathan is the best. I met him in July at LFCC and he was fantastic. He really goes that extra mile and you can tell his heart's in it.

The actors are awesome like whoa.

Now I will have to hunt down Firefly, watch it and fangurl them. For real.

This is HUGE. They weren't financially compensated. They pulled stuff out of their own storage bins to give to these fans.

**on to-do list: Watch Firefly, fangurl like a mofo**

That's fantastic. I love it when celebrities REALLY care about their supporters. I've met a ton of celebs now and Alan and Nathan are easily among the nicest. Both came across as very charming, funny and genuine guys. *hearts them*

Watch Firefly, if you haven't. It's an amazing series that should have lasted a lot longer than just a few episodes. I myself only discovered it early this year thanks to everyone on my flist raving about it.

Yeah, I can't really point and laugh at this. I hate scammers and pity their victims too much.

And if anything would get me watching Firefly, this would. Those guys are... just indescribably sweet.
