You Can't Take the Wank from Me!
I thought it would take ten days for the spooge to truly hit the fan, but here we go.

Last week, a group of eggy custard lovers Firefly fen descended upon the distant and unprepared shores of California for Flanvention 2, the overpriced convention that never happened. A splendid time was had by those brave 200-300 who came out of total ignorance, or made a leap of faith, because that's how damn shiny the Firefly actors are.

Booster Events has put targets on their shirts opened their site back up now that the event weekend is over. They have a cancellation notice up and everything, now that the con is over, and are advertizing for two more cons they're putting on.

Isn't that cute? It's like they expect people to come to future events or something. Awwww...

Over on Whedonesque, people bring teh funny early on, but that gets squashed and we're left with some rather boring cooler heads deciding to walk away. (After they rant a bit, of course.)

Never fear! You can't stop the signal wank! They even kindly point out where we can find it!

Over at the Booser Events board we get to see the flimsy excuse of a PR move heart-felt apology for the weekend's fiasco, including a bit of sour grapes misdirection in a further reply. "We are beyond thrilled that the backup bash went so well and you all got to party not only with the BDH's but also other Whedonverse." You can imagine how well that went over. This is where we hear how the Backup Bash wasn't what they paid for, and that only 200-300 people showed, which left 200-300 people with nothing. We're also treated to a post by someone who thinks that saying, "I would like my refund please." six times, and repeated use of the word "FRAUD" will get them treated better than all the other sheep who were fleeced this weekend.

Meanwhile, it's more of the same but with a more amusing name, over on LJ. The community be_victims teaches everyone how to take it bent over and sideways complains about BE and begins dispensing legal advice. (Sorry, the first time I saw the name of that com, I had a moment of "WTF?" It makes me giggle, though it probably shouldn't.)

Again, most of the fandom is full of justifiable outrage, but there's plenty to point and laugh about. (And I mean it, this time. lol)

I'm getting runtime errors on all the B.E. links.

Maybe they can take the wank from us! D:

Hrm. I think the BE site crashed or something; I'm just getting "runtime error."

But really, WTFF? They're putting on more cons and expecting people to go? That's a spine made out of Adamantium right there.

Hilarious. I look forward to the ETAs on this.

I do have to ask, is maintaining a high-traffic blog so difficult that you have to require registration that's available maybe twice a year on average just to COMMENT on stories? I enjoy reading Whedonesque, to be sure, but that's always struck me odd.

All I want to know is: how can I give these people as much of my money as soon as possible? Also, how much will they need and will they accept solid gold/my first born child?

They just seem so trust-worthy and reliable, I can't wait to attend an event planned by them!!

For the real, the guts to have the site back up with NO explanation, no mention of refunding, and further plugs for future events ... it's a little mind-boggling.

(and "be_victims" just makes me think of Bit of Earth. Great connotation, there.)

Am I reading correctly that BE is based out of Oregan? Which...IIRC, is where VB/OB started their wank careers? Um. Wouldn't it be interesting if BE turned out to be VB/OB-related? Kinda sounds like their M.O., after all. Of course, it if /was/ them, they'd have been at the parties anyway, muscling in on all the stars.

Can we add that to the boy who murdered his parents and asked the court for clemecy because he's an orphan for the definition of chutzpah? I'm actually wierdly impressed by the sheer nerve of it.

I've worked for fan-run conventions and business-run conventions and i've heard about my share of completely dumb collapsed-after-day-one conventions (Con No Baka anyone?) but this really takes the cake. Either they are really brain-numbingly bad at this con thing or i call shenannigans!

In the point-and-laugh department, here's a gem from cjmck1 on the Flan Cancellation public forum:

And as has stated this week by many, the damage this has done to the entire Con industry and the Fandom, may very well be ushering in the end of Fan Conventions , forever.

FOREVER. ;___;

Sorry, but when I saw BDH i thought of BDSM...and the Firefly cast in latex...with whips.

o.O

WTF does BDH mean? Big Damn Heads? Buddhist Dharma Heathens? An enquiring mind wants to know!

Um, these people do realise that the "backup bash" only went so well because the Firefly cast are made of win, and that very few celebrities would even consider helping out like that?

The nerve of these people is really something special. Yeah, someone's definitely sunning themselves on a beach right now thanks to all that cash. If this wasn't such a huge scam, they'd try and offer refunds to their best ability, surely?

We need more irony in our diet...

Gacked this off the official BE site. It's a direct copy of the information thereon. Nothing has been changed except for the bolding of particularly ironic bits (which is mine).

Our Conventions

We are not interested in large mega-cons where clients are lucky to see their favorite actor. We believe it is more satisfying and memorable when the fans are treated well, the guests are more than "product", and they can interract on a more personal level than is possible in the rushed, regimented atmosphere of mega-cons. Our conventions are unique, memorable, and rare opportunities to share your enjoyment of quality entertainment with other fans and the people that create them. We limit the attendance of our conventions, and yet still have the largest number of stars of any convention of any type, which means our clients get to actually mingle and socialize with the guests in a relaxed and fun environment. We boast the best client-to-star ratio of any convention, and are committed to providing the best possible experience for both fans, and the celebrity guests.

We love what we do and how we do it. And we know you will too.

Who are the Boosters?

Denise Adams (Partner)
Denise owns and operates two businesses. Active in charitable causes, Denise is based in Ashland, Oregon. Half the event planning team, she is the primary contact for guest bookings and guest suggestions. Denise is devoted to providing attendees with the most interesting and enjoyable guest line-ups possible. Denise is the secondary customer contact for BE, she is always available for attendee questions or comments.

Vicki Fisher (Partner)
Based in Blaine, Minnesota, Vicki has ten years of event planning experience. Active in charitable causes, a scientist, Vicki is the main customer service contact for BE. Half the event planning team, she is committed to attendee satisfaction and works tirelessly to ensure BE's conventions are organized, professional and fun.

Wes Clyburn (Systems Engineer)
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Wes assists with event planning, writes software, runs our servers, and handles all things techie.
Wes is a certified engineer with more than 15 years combined experience in corporate software development and network architecture.

And yes, I also believe that the return of the website is a prelude to insolvency declaration. Or maybe they're just trying to take another bite of the apple before leaving for the Caymans. After all, they have two more events listed for which you can pre-register--and the main site says almost nothing about the Flanvention cancel! Just one ittybitty line in a column way down the page. Remember what P.T. Barnum said: "There's a BE victim born every minute."
