Oh, good lord.
This wank has been brought to you by a grant from TWoPville, and the number 13.

So, in the newest recap of Sex in the City, (the hilarious) Alex Richmond writes about a fantasy she had of rough sex with Denzel Washington.

Somebody gets offended.

Things go considerably downhill.

Do you seriously think Alex Richmond is hilarious? I thought she was widely regarded as the least funny recapper. She seems nice, I guess. But she couldn't even make The Anna Nicole Show amusing. YMMV.

I believe JumpTheShark.com has (jokingly) identified her bad recaps as being the Kiss of Death for any show-- every show she's ever recapped never made it past the first season. *snerk*

Perhaps, but didn't Anna Nicole make it to season two? Yeah, it's E!, but still.

I read the recaps, too, and I think the reason they weren't funny is 'cause, well, what else is there to work with? Anna Nicole is more of a person to pity than to laugh at, in my opinion. Every time I catch myself watching an ep in of the show, I keep thinking, "Why hasn't anyone thrown her in the Betty yet?"

I've never seen SatC and my only exposure to TWOP has been Omar and his hysterical recaps of Smallville, but I read that whole beating-a-black-guy-sex-fantasy-thing as a very poor stab at being humorous. Not offensive really (since I could *so* get into a little BDSM with Mr. Washington myself *and* I don't have a stick the size of Africa stuck up my ass like that other dude seems to) but she worded it badly and it really didn't fit in with the recap, imo. Maybe she does this a lot and has done it better in the past, but I don't think her being called on her wording here should result in all the bannings she imposed. Lots of wank on both sides to be shared, but I think she got the blue ribbon when she banned all the posters involved without any real warning. And with all the pouty snark of someone unhappy and unused to anything but praise and pats on the back.

Some of the recappers are good, some are not, that's certainly the plain and simple truth. I recall that one recapper once, offhandedly, said that the owner of the sight... Sars, or something, is his name?... pressured them to find running gags for recaps of the series they were doing. And many do...
And then they proceed to ride that running gag right into the ground.
I remember finding the "Enterprise" recaps and thinking they were okay. And then came the thirtieth repetition of "Captain Quantum" by the fifth page of the first review. And the sixtieth use of the term "dinners" for breasts by same. The humor was very rapidly fading under the weight of some of the recapper's... less amusing quirks. By the point she was tossing in random Bush-bashing, I just gave up and stopped reading them, because the recaps were almost as painful as watching the damn show.
The Birds of Prey recaps, on the other hand, were funny as hell, and I really enjoyed the recap of the season finales of Everwood and ER.
I wish, though, that they'd do animated shows. I'd like to see recaps of The Simpsons, it's gotten so bad in recent years there's gotta be comedy GOLD in mocking it...

Well, that certainly explains the over-usage of 'Bo Kent', lol. Even if it does fit, it was losing its shine by the end of the first season. I tried reading recaps of a few shows that I tend to watch religiously, but none of the writers for those shows could match Omar and I lost interest. Makes me thankful that someone as good-natured as Omar recaps SV, otherwise, all those lovely GayLE's could have ended up as homophobic rants in a lesser person's hands.

As for The Simpson's, I can't remember the last time I actually watched the show itself, but I *never* miss Bart writing on the blackboard or the race for the couch. *I'd* love for someone to recap SpongeBob, though, lol. Gayest. Cartoon. Ever.

Isn't Sars of Tomato Nation fame? I know that Sars is friends with some TWoP recappers, but didn't know if the two were one and the same.

They are one and the same. And Sars is one-third of the creators/owners of TWoP. The other two are Wing Chun and Glark.

I think they (Gustave and Alex) would have done better to explain that that wasn't the place for such a discussion, rather than get involved in a snarky to and fro which just increased the wank and bad feeling.
As for banning the poster, I think it was the only way they could shut them up - people have a drum and they are going to bang it, no matter what, even if it did all amount of misunderstanding of wording - but yep, whole thing was very badly done. And now the thread is locked! You have to love that as a reaction...

I agree, I think they could have avoided the entire wankfest if, rather than devolving to that old standby of "Grow up", they'd simply taken the higher road of civility (shyeah, like that ever happens *anywhere*) and stated that the whole thing was off topic and to cease and desist or bannings would happen. Of course, it's loads more fun when someone cops a snit and gets all ban-happy. Well, more fun for us anyway, heh.

I doubt it. Habanero Burger seemed to have decided he was going to throw a fit and make a stand, despite the author repeatedly explaining to him that she wasn't saying what he had such a problem with. True, she didn't out-and-out say "Quite being off-topic or I'll ban!", but she did repeatedly tell him "This isn't appropriate here, you can privately mail me with your concerns".
Any time you try to take on the board administrator, even if you're RIGHT, you should be prepared to be banned, anyway.

Yeah, but that's what they *do* over at TWoP. Disagree, even politely, with the wrong mod? Banned. Call mods on shit that posters aren't allowed to do? Banned. Express any dislike for any aspect of the site? Banned. Explaining the moderating policy of the TWoP forums is a wankfest all its own.

That was so very pointless and wanky indeed.

I think it's cheeky to voice dissention in a thread which is meant for praising the recapper, even if I personally find the recapper in question extremely unfunny.
Favourite part was when the banned poster's housemate chimed in, felt oddly akin to getting your mum to step in and sort it out for you.

I don't know the whole backstory here but to me the wank is all in Habanero Burger.

Okay I'll admit the comment was tasteless, but since when was that a crime?

I mean it's one thing to tell the poster that she could've phrased that better, it's another entirely to tell them that they're a horrible, racist, child-molesting bastard, all while bringing up PERSONAL issues which really have nothing to do with anything on the board.

I don't know...Habanero Burger (which I keep reading as Harrison Bergeron) may have overreacted, but it also seems pretty over the top for the mods to refuse to discuss the issue and ban the poster. It's like that kid in high school who had a screaming fit when a teacher gave him a C-. "My work is lumps of pure gold! How dare you say otherwise!"

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I didn't find the recap that funny, either.

At the risk of being discuss WHAT? It's a SatC recap not the works of Oscar Wilde, either you find it funny or you don't. There's no need to get in some drawn out debate over one posters [admittedly odd] fantasy.

I do think it's wanky to ban 'em like that, but I can see where the mod is coming from. That posters seems the type who's going to be offended, even if there's nothing to be offended about.

Mmm. In a perfect world, the recapper would say, "You know what? I could have worded that better. I apologize if you're upset but I didn't mean any harm," and H.B. would say, "Oh, okay. Maybe I got a little too wound up. No harm done."

But it's not a perfect world, and so you get, "Don't criticize my genius erotica writing skills!" "Serial killer!" "You're outta here, buddy!" What can you do?

And in that perfect world, the initial argument would be "I found that very offensive and wish to complain," not, "YOU LIKE TO BEAT AND LYNCH BLACK MEN, RACIST BITCH!"

But they weren't even refusing to discuss the issue... they were just telling Burger-boy to take the discussion to private mail, because the board wasn't the proper place for that particular discussion.
