Quality New Fandom Wank for Final Fantasy XII!
The Final Fantasy XII fandom is only a few months into its infancy and there's already wank storms abrewing there.

Follow through for some Mary Sewage...

Someone named Tomiki-chan posts a very, very, very long-running Balthier X OC fanfic that ends up attracting a few less than stellar reviews, most of which concentrate on it's outlandish OC character and interesting characterization of canon people, given that the author admits to never having played the game. Days later, someone named Ravenshirin (who claims to be Tomiki-chan's sister) blasts back at reviewers with the following:

Okay, everyone , I am PISSED! My sister, Tokimi-chan has now quit writing. Thanks a lot. Yeah, first off, her character isn’t a mary sue. Who ever told her that can go to hell. By the way, maybe you guys should look up the definition of CONTRUCTIVE CRITISISM because OBVIOUSLY you idiots are too stupid to know what that is. I hope you’re all happy, though. You just ruined writing for my sister. Thabks, ya $$h0lez! All of you can go to hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Though this wank is small, it is indeed very cute and I believe it may be the first wank that occurs within the fandom over fanfic. Get it while it's hot, folks-- I have a feeling this isn't going to last for very long!</ljc-tu>

Ok I read the first few sentences of that story and wanted to bitchslap her for doing such horrible characterization on Balthier. YOU DO NOT MESS WITH BALTHIER BITCHES.

Ahem, anyway...

Why the heck would you write fanfic for something you know nothing about? You'd pretty much have to expect to be eaten alive by reviewers if you did that, especially in a fandom with such a rabid fanbase. The reviews weren't even that bad though.

I dunno, my Penelo/Larsa stupidity is running about twenty reviews at FFnet. I'd have to go look at the section to see how much reviewing is going on but that would involve actually looking at the ffnet section of FF12 and frankly there's not enough booze in this world or the next.

My only experience with it thus far has been my girlfriend going "WTF?! Al-Cid x Larsa?!" and also popping over briefly to see that the very few fics I've dared to read (because they were written by someone I know who does not really do fluff ot generic pairing crap)... had all of three reviews.

Am not sure I ever want to join this fandom in earnest, because I suspect that I will again find myself just wanting to spam them with this graphic.

Heh, I totally ship the two as well. To the point where I spend valuable hours of my time writing fanfic and lists of why to fangirl them. And I don't even have the decency to be ashamed of the age difference, since Penelo is awesome, Larsa was pretty much born (created, whatever) middle-aged and there's always the option of aging him up via AU magic or speeding ahead post-game anyway. ;)

BTW, if you don't mind me asking, what fic did you write featuring the two in FF.net?

Expected Outcomes, because one morning I woke up and said to myself, when he gets to be five years older she won't know what hit her, and then had an extended conversation with someone about the likelihood of "one minute Penelo is innocently visiting her good friend Larsa and the next minute she is on a float wearing a white dress and all she really knows is that she is going to smack the crap out of Larsa when she figures out what he just did to her!"

there's also an extended joke I should finish about Vaan getting a note from Larsa going :D :D I KIDNAPPED PENELO :D :D :D and having to go see what the hell he is on.

Hey, I totally know and love that fic! I think it must seriously be the funniest thing written in the fandom so far... if only because poor, clueless Penelo manages to fall into Devious!Larsa's matrimonial mummery so helplessly. Though I suppose a few years with mostly just Vaan by your side is enough to dull anyone's wits. Poor boy. It's not his fault that the force of his dimmness is so powerful it can rub off on bystanders as well.

Have you written another other Final Fantasy XII fics, btw? I'd love to give them a read if you have.

oh right, you run the Larsa/penelo C2 comm? I don't read a lot of fic unless I know the people involved because it's bad for my blood pressure (oh God I want to hit some people in fandom right now so badly) so I'm not really up to date on the fic being written.

Um, there's one short one involving Larsa trying to find Penelo something for Solstice on my LJ (same name) -- if nothing else search my tags for 'larsa/penelo antics'. I keep getting dared to write Basch/Ashe and I seriously want to write Larsa and Drace and Galbranth as the most fucked up nonbiological but totally loving family ever but other people have beat me to it.

Yup, I run that comm and so I pretty much try to keep up with all the Larsa X Penelo fanfics posted on FF.net. :) And there's actually quite a bit of good fic written about the pair on both the
LarsaXPenelo livejournal community and the C2 comm. I'd reccomend this, this and this most of all.

(Mind you, there are also some efforts up at both sites that are... less than steller. But what the hell, writing 'fic isn't serious business after all. As long as someone's enjoying it, it's all good!)

Thank you for the recc! I'll definitely go and look at it now. I really enjoyed your previous story so I'd love to see more of how you write them. (Also, I'm not totally hallucinating the LarsaXPeneloXVaan pairing I glimpsed in Expected Outcomes, am I? Because if ever I shipped an OT3, that would be it!)

(And Larsa and Drace/Gabranth? Seriously, why did I not think of this before myself? The notion is 'tis genius!)

I'm sort of glad that she wrote this not knowing anything about the characters because the fic would probably have constant Fran-bashing and bashing makes me sad. Unless it's Light-bashing.

My friends cosplayed FFX-2 without playing the games. I was the only one who had played both FFX and FFX-2 and I refused to cosplay Paine for them out of protest.

And Balthier, Fran, and Penelo are my fave characters so far in FFXII- I am not touching those fics with a ten foot pole.

I &hearts Penelo like a maniac. I've shipped her with everyone from Vaan to Larsa to Vayne to freaking Reks. She's so awesome at the beginning of the game that it's a damn shame we never get to know more about her past or why she's even with the part for most of the game. I really hope Revenant Wings gives her more development in the future!

The only way I could see Ashe giggling is if this fic took place approximately ten years before she actually met Balthier.

This makes me glad I never bother to read many other fics outside of the ones which relate to my 'ship. Oy. Poor Balthier. . . Taking *one look* at the summary, or even the pairing, is enough to swear me off of it. Sorry if that seems cunty, but I'm always wary of OC characters thrown into fics. It has the potential to be shite unless the writer knows what the fuck they're doing.
