LKH tries to be as missunderstood as Anne Rice
Laurell K Hamilton just published another book that had no other story then to tell the world her wanking fantasies.

More fans then ever complain about the lack of plot, and Amazon reviews go down like hell

http://blog.laurellkhamilton.org/2006/12/dear-negative-reader.html

I'm sure there are other books out there that will make you happier than mine. There are books with less sex in them, God knows. There are books that don't make you think that hard. Books that don't push you past that comfortable envelope of the mundane. If you want to be comforted, don't read my books. They aren't comfortable books. They are books that push my character and me to the edge and beyond of our comfort zones. If that's not want you want, then stop reading. Put my books away with other things that frighten and confuse or just piss you off. I have my list of stuff like that. So good for you, you've decided not to read me anymore. Good luck, God speed.

[..]

Let this post also put to rest the idea that I don't know that a small minority, albeit a loud minority, hates my series. I've known that for awhile. Like the first time someone stood in line for hours at a signing, smiled at me, and had me sign the book, then said to my face, "I hated this book. I hate what you've done with the series." I blinked at them, and said something like, "Sorry to hear that." When I ask, "Why do you read the books then?" Answer, "I keep hoping they'll get good again." Jon and I have heard variations of this across the country from a maybe five people. But strangely, having someone say to your face, that they hate your books and at least twice, that they hate you stand out in our minds. Since I wouldn't stand in line for hours to tell someone I loved their work, the fact that people stand in line for hours to tell me they hate my work, just puzzles the hell out of me

And if you don't think you are the minority, well, sorry, guys but you are. I have the sales figures to prove it. Each book’s sales are more than the last. The vast majority of people standing in line love the books, love the series, and tell us so. Some people even ask for more police procedural. I want more, too. If the person asks nicely, not rudely, or in that tone that seems to imply if I don't do what they want the series is doomed to failure, I listen. The arduer is a pain in my, and Anita's butt, too. But I believe in my world. I've done this major metaphysical event. I won't just 'fix it' because it's hard to write around. God, knows, sometimes it is. But the arduer is moving along. I've got my fix in mind, but it's logical, not something that's merely convenient, or because some people hate it. But the arduer is not going away. If that's what you guys are wanting, then it ain't happening. Leave now, because more arduer awaits. The arduer is evolving, as are Anita's powers, but I don't see the arduer going poof.

As for the people who keep suggesting that I simply start killing characters because Anita has too many men in her life . . . The characters aren't real to you. They are real to me, and to a lot of other people. I, and a lot of readers, would feel an emotional loss if some of these guys died. Obviously, you, negative reader, do not feel anything for the people you would urge me to destroy. I am sorry you do not love them, or at least like them, as I do. I have failed as a writer that you could kill them, and feel nothing.

On the same time her publicist/assistent minion Darla posts this to the message board as a warning:

For those of you who say this is nothing but a Praise Board. Fine, it is. Feel free to run up and down the street screaming "I was right!" with my blessing. Personally, I am tired of listening to you whine and trying to make others here feel bad about the fact they don't share your opinion. Trust me, your opinion is really only important to you. The rest of us, could care less about what you think and wish you would go away. Yes, I do get to say what a lot of folks are thinking and have expressed in emails.

The snarkiness and nastiness will now stop. Immediately. Some folks have turned waltzing up to the edge into an art. No more. Abide by both the letter of the rules and the spirit of them or be banned. The mods here have a difficult job and are doing their best. And they do a fine job. If you think something isn't fair, then talk to me. There is no way a single person could mod this board. And there may be some uneveness in how things are handled. But that is mine to deal with. I am the one who makes the rules. The mods merely enforce what I decide. Yup, I am queen. Sometimes, new things come up and a rule may not cover it completely or adequately. That is on me not them. I will applaud those who spend the time seeking loopholes to exploit. Some of you are really good at it. You should run for public office.

A really professional tone there, Darla. I'm going to rechristen you Mrs Tina Knowles, or Prime Minion of the Pirandello Wannabe.

Do we even need to go through the list anymore? My characters are real to me; if you don't like it, don't read it; my lurkers support me in email; it's not for you . . .

It's things like LKH's blog post that make me realise Garth Marenghi is worryingly realistic.

I hated those books of hers that I read because they made sex boring. Sex should never be boring. I won't be reading other books by her just in case she makes my other pleasures boring too.

arduer

*headdesk* *headdesk* *headdesk*

Six times in one paragraph! How can she expect anyone to take her seriously if she can't even spell her own "major metaphysical event"?

There are books that don't make you think that hard.

...

I can guarantee that none of LKH's books made me think hard, even when the AB series was halfway decent.

Sometimes I wonder if LKH is another, good writer's sockpuppet trying to make a point about the state of the publishing industry and the tastes of the masses. Because the idea that she's for real makes the baby Jesus cry.

I wait eagerly for the day when her sales finally drop enough that her publishers tell her to fuck off. That said, actually saying to her face that you hate her? Not the act of a responsible human being.

The funny thing is, the Merry Gentry books are what I read when I don't want to think. They're dubiously-written, lavishly-described, multi-colored elf candy, and surprisingly nice to read when you have, say, a massive head cold. About all they push the boundaries of is how many pages you can devote to a single sex scene, and if you spend much time in fandom, they don't even do that.

I have never read anything she wrote, and I'm glad, and I don't plan on reading any. If her work was actually good, then she wouldn't have to work so hard to convince herself and the masses that it was great.

I didn't bother checking which series the new book is in, but it doesn't matter. I enjoyed the Anita Blake series for awhile, but I think I stopped buying them after Narcisus in Chains (apologies, I think I spelled that wrong, but like LKH, I don't really care). I read the first book of the Merry Gentry series and bought the second, but was never able to finish it.

Part of what offended me was the very obvious lack of any kind of editing. Misspelled words and homonyms in the wrong places (what you get from a spell checker if you don't pay attention) just annoyed the living fuck out of me.

If I want to read badly spelled, boring porn, I can get it for free on the internet. And yes, both books read like bad author-insertion fanfic.

Sorry, LKH, I don't bother with any forums, I just vote with my wallet.

Wow, LKH is certainly delusional, to say the least. The shame is, the series had potential at the beginning.

Please tell me someone has written readable Anita Blake fanfic, especially if the characters involved are not Anita and Jean-Claude.

I've read all of the series (not bought, mind you, that's what libraries are for) except for the most recent book, plus I gave up on Obsidian Butterfly early on when I saw that Edward's characterization was not going to be to my liking. Shame that, because I think Edward, written properly, could have a series of his own.

Thanks for the write-up, LKH wank always makes me smile.

Yeah, because "Chick kills vampires. Chick kills zombies. Chick fucks vampires and zombies," is the height of intellectual literature.

Porn =/= Deep, Laurell baby.

Laurell K. Hamilton IS Grover in, "There's a Negative Reader At The End of This Book Rant!"

If you are still a negative reader, please leave. Please do not read beyond this point. Warning, warning, warning. The next bit of this message is for the positive people. For the people who love my characters, or at least don't hate them.

I just read the whole damn thing outloud to my partner. My tea got cold between paragraphs. He's still choking in a corner asking what he did wrong.

Ah, LKH... The only thing that could make this better is if your publishing company suddenly disavowed you.

I tried a book of her, once.
Got bored after around fifty pages, and didn't bother reading more.

Jeez. Rampant egoes at four o'clock!

A lovely example of women waving their non-existent willies in other people's faces.

Translation: "I don't care about your opinion, you're only a paying customer! Plenty more where you came from!"

Amazing how the least scintilla of internet notoriety can serve to inflate the self-esteem beyond all normal boundaries, innit?
