The Rick Olney non-payment spectacular!
There is no way I can possibly do justice to this one in a single post. But it's a start.

There's a guy called Ric(k)(?) Olney. He runs conventions and owns something called Tightlip Entertainment, a comic book company. He has a bad habit of not paying people. Ever. People in the comics industry have been comparing notes and as best as anyone can tell, nobody who did any work for him has ever received what they were owed.

So Gail Simone, who went to one of his conventions and was never fully reimbursed, starts a thread on her message board on Comic Book Resources about Olney's various deceptions, and people who have been cheated or encountered the Rickster share their experiences. He's apparently a serial liar and prone to flameouts on message boards and in public. And Gail's thread proves no exception, as "orcafresh" shows up and proceeds to threaten talent for breaking imaginary NDAs, spew insults and vitriol and get dogpiled by an all-star cast of comic book professionals. Eventually Gail has to ban him- the first time she's banned anyone from her board EVER- just to keep him from going back and deleting all his posts.

Highlights include implying Gail slept her way into the industry, belittling the people who work in the industry he claims to work in, mocking people for their weight when he himself has been kindly described as "portly" (note also the homophobia), making obtuse threats, mangling pop culture references, and slowly degenerating into image posts and word salad.

On the bright side, you have pros like Mark Waid, Kurt Busiek, Scott Shaw!, Gail Simone herself and others stepping up to make the case against Olney, and to try and find ways to compensate the people who are still owed money by him.

Other places are reporting on this as well, and the increasingly awesome Mr. Waid has encouraged folks to get the word out.

Oh, and the reason he keeps putting Gail Simone's name in quotes is because it's a pen name. That's apparently somehow egregious.

(I posted on the original thread but won't anymore.)

ETA: To clarify, Simone hasn't really banned Olney, only "Orcafresh". He's free to come back with whatever alias he chooses, but he can't log on under his old SN because then he'd be able to delete his old posts. So she's still technically "banless".

ETA 2: "TLE is no longer in business. As of 1/11/07."

How the hell could he stay in business if he never pays anyone?

Wow, this particular tactic is ballsy: he hired some woman to do some work, then didn't pay her. When she demands money, he says something along the lines of "Well, I'd love to pay you, except that it's illegal to pay an employee/contract if there's only a verbal contract, and gosh-darn-it we forgot to do a written contract! So, if you'd just sign this contract here, I'd be happy to pay you what I owe you." And he then sends a contract which includes conditions along the lines of "I agree not to say anything if Rick fails to pay me". So if she refuses to sign (like she did) he says "Oh, so sorry, but my hands are legally tied, I can't pay you", but if she does sign, he also doesn't pay her and (attempts) to sue her if she complains about it to anyone.

Of course, it being illegal to pay an employee/contractor without a written contract is a bunch of bull, but he pretends that this is what his lawyer has told him.

(Rick first shows up here on page 34, but most of his early comments were "deleted" by replacing with an image of himself with a stake driven through his chest, if the calling himself "The most hated man in comics". What a martyr complex. Plus, the stake is on the wrong side of the chest for it be through the heart)

*pops in from sporadic lurking*

Oh Jesus tapdancing Christ. My girlfriend and I were once in talks to sell an illustrated sci-fi series to this guy, when he was claiming to start up some kind of publishing company. We knew someone who'd worked with him and was, surprise surprise, still expecting money but didn't know half of this crap about him. So after stopping us two seconds into our pitch with 'sounds great, we'll do it', he was then unable to tell us:

1) how he was going to advertise it and where
2) who he would market it towards
3) who he would get to illustrate it and under what grounds although he claimed to have people in mind
4) anything regarding the state of his pending company or plans for the books at all

under the guise of 'trade secrets', while pretty much ignoring any statement we made or other question we asked. (I mean, I don't know what the official policies are of a place like Del Ray Books or something, where I normally wouldn't ask questions like that, but this was a beginning 'small press' and we were talking about this through a freaking message board.)

When we started going 'uhhhh' he blew up at us and decided to put us on a deadline for a decision to force our hands, at which point we finally thought to do a Google search on his name and promptly never even spoke to him again. (He reacted to this by threatening to sue our friend for slander. Charming.)

It was very, very special. The thread makes me gape but doesn't surprise me a bit, although I'm cracking up through my disgust at the homophobia because we stated about a zillion times that the novels had predominantly GLBT characters and were extremely poly-friendly.

Yeesh, this guy gives me Ray Ferry vibes.

For those who aren't in the horror community, Ray Ferry weasled his way into Famous Monsters magazine and screwed over the sweetest man in the fandom, Forry Ackerman along with many others.

Essentially Uncle Forry who'd kept alive the interest in the older films in the genre along with owning a memorabilia collection that should be the icon of awesome (like the remaining Dracula cape Lugosi wore, Karloff's Imhotep ring, surviving copies of the old pulp books with Lovecraft's work..etc.), and since Uncle Forry was getting up in years, he hired Ray to help out with Famous Monsters.

Ray ended up weasling Forry out claiming all sorts of crap, shafting the subscribers to the magazine with taking thier money and not coughing up the mags, and depending who you talk to did some dodgy dealings with Uncle Forry's memorabilia.

Ended up going to trial where Uncle Forry won, but Ferry appealed like a madman and hunts down anything derogatory said about him with threats of lawsuits.

To this day it's not known how much of the famous Forry collection is still in Uncle Forry's collection. While he did have to sell some of it to cover the court costs with all those appeals, Ferry had been found with some items in his possesion that he's not given a reason for and promptly end up dissappearing. He's also doing the constant moving around so it's hard for anyone to track that bastard down.

And then you wonder how Gail would write this scenario out, and it all becomes better.

But I have to ask: where is Warren Ellis, Gail Simone's unholy child of awesome, in all this?
