The Return of the Rent Wank
Once upon a time, there was an LJ community called [info]speed_rent, which gave one prompt daily where people would compete for fabulous prizes (most of which could be obtained easily in other ways, so they were sort of incidental). Then stuff happened. Then the mod got a new fandom, and decided to pimp out her new daily prompt challenge comm for her new fandom on this comm.

And now there is incoming wank.

Thrill at the tl;dr rants against the mod! Be amazed at the accusations that she ignores e-mails! Watch in awe as people gang up on the one person who tries to defend the mod!

Small so far, but so virulent and full of venom that, while possibly too little for the big comm here, just seemed too nasty and wanky already for [info]clairvoyantwank.

ETA: And the comments are all gone! But we may have screens forthcoming, so stay tuned.

ETA2: Bahleeted. And the comm is on lockdown (I just unjoined it recently, too) so I don't know if there are any locked entries on the matter.

ETA3: Friend who is a member said that there is a locked entry. The long and short of it: the comm is being "cleansed" and only people who actually "participate" will be allowed to be a member now. Read: she's dropping the banhammer on all the folks who bashed her in her last post.

ETA4: And here are the screens! Thanks to [info]insouciance! 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

*snork* Well, it's nice to see that imaginary prizes can inspire such rage. TV isn't killing creativity after all.

Maybe people got to make up their own imaginary prizes..

That's something F_W could try.

"Compete in our silliness and win your choice of things that never existed, like...

An Usagi Kou signed Sprite Bottle, with Realistic Scent!

A Nighttime Bartending Kit with Night Vision Goggles!

An Astral Snape Blow Up Doll with Lifelike Greasy Hair!

A free baptisim in the church of Elijah the moon god!

Or the Thoughts on Yaoi grab bag!"

Technically, downloads of Rent related media. Of course, anyone who actually wants half that stuff, already pulled it from limewire.

Personally my "favorite" bit happened a few months back when one of the challenges was to write something relatively average for an SR prompt, or to write a non-con story. I posted a comment to the post saying that I found the non-con part of the challenge to be uncalled for and, frankly, rather disgusting, since it was basically a challenge that required one of the characters to rape another.

Errr, okay, isn't there plenty of noncon in other fandoms? That people ignore if they don't like it? That other people enjoy reading not for the sex necessarily, but also the mindfuck factor? Why is this worth getting your panties knotted over?

Does not compute.

That was the bit that got me, too. Especially because of that word "or"--there was a "relatively average" prompt, or you could write non-con. So no one actually *had* to write non-con to participate.

Exactly. It's not like she said outright that they had to write a rape story; that's why she provided an alternative, for crying out loud.

I'm just saddened that all the shit that went down with the stupid speed_rent soundtrack never really made it public.

It appears the comments have been removed. If you want them for prosperity, I'd be happy to oblige. But I only have the first seven or so /ramble.

I'm also quite stoked a comm I frequent has made it here. *should not be verbalizing thoughts at 3am:

It's been building up since the summer. Basically, the mod takes it upon herself to put up a challenge, tally votes, make banners, announce winners and upload and email out prizes each 24hour period and began to fall behind. Instead of catching up, she decided to create a Rent movie soundtrack sung by members of the comm, and the fic challenges faded into the background.

Members of the group noticed this, pointed it out, and offered whatever help was needed. The mod got incredibly stroppy, saying it was her comm and she would run it, but did allow people to help with banner making. She also wanted people to email her if they had problems. I sent one email and never recieved a reply, and from the looks of the comments, I'm not the only one.

When people complained or commented about issues publicly, those comments were deleted. The challenges started going from 24 hour ones to 3 day ones, the prompts were recycled. And now the mod is opening a mirror community for another fandom, and I know I'm concerned that this fabulous community is just going to die, as obviously are other people.

So, it was kind of a build up of tension - there were volunteers for every aspect of helping out, but the mod reassured people things were going to change and... yeah. I've rambled. I hope this makes sense ^_^

And here I thought nothing in RENT fandom could top Anthony's bout of wankiness before the movie came out. I was wrong.

I'm counting down until Tracie's side of fandom gets wanky. And then I will weep.

First, linkage.

Could you maybe not be so negative about my movie please? Thanks!

In which Anthony Rapp chastised people on the BroadwayWorld.com message boards for negative reviews of RENT. He apparently got into it with at least one person in PM's over there and just basically kind of made an ass of himself, there and on OscarWatch. I'd like to think he meant well, and I'd like to think that his heart was in the right place, but I just am not sure. After reading his book and hearing some fan tales from friends of mine, my opinion of him has changed somewhat.

Seasons of Wank

In which a conversation on BroadwayWorld.com - again. Hmm, maybe we should be watching this one as much as we watch IMDb? - that starts out as a fairly benign "ZOMG CHRIS COLUMBUS IS HOMOPHOBIC!!!11" discussion once again ends with Anthony throwing his hat into the ring.

The comedy gold is in the first one though.

I'm glad there was no wank about Tracie-as-Joanne, as well there should be, since she was awesome (I was pleasantly surprised to see she is in the cast 'Without A Trace,' incidentially in an episode where Adam Pascal guest-starred).

Cold Case actually, but yeah. I know, that made me giddy. Turned me into a fan of a TV show. That hasn't happened in a long time.

Most of the press about Tracie-as-Joanne was pretty positive, thank god, because she's just an all around awesome person.
