I think the funniest part wasn't so much the c/p of 'ICON THIEF' but the initial response that involved multiple comment entries. It's like her thoughts took so long to form a coherent entry that she had to take time to type a little bit, come back, and do a little more.

I think the whole concept of "icon thievery" is utter wank.

At most, an icon will take me 10-15 minutes to make (if I'm trying new, 1337 animation I've never done) and I'm doing it cause I'm bored off my ass. Please, use it. I make so many I'll never use them all.

I mainly use ones that are pics of me OR I drew myself, for personal use. So it'd be weird if someone yanked those. I'm not that good looking or that good an artist. ^_~

Hmmmm...
Well, I know I wouldn't go all psycho with the C&P, but it would probably depend on which of my icons it was. If it's just the Asuka or Misato ones, all I did on those was change a pink border to blue. I would be mildly sad at the loss of their "speshulness", and maybe say "Hey, notice you've got my icon", but eh. If it was one of the icons I'd made for Meredy, probably just mildly more upset, even though they are just cropped art, but still no going psycho... I'd more be a little upset because I made those special for a friend and now they're NOT SPESHUL no more!
There are all of two icons that I might flip out over being taken and reused without permission, and neither are currently in use. One's a Yuffie icon I might use for myself at some point, and that's because I had to do a hell of a lot of editing on the original pic to get it ready for icon usage, and it WAS a pain to do that. (I still wouldn't be as utterly lame as buddy up there, but eh.) The other is an icon of a sprite of Scorpius, from Farscape. I made it for a friend by doing a hell of a lot of very careful (pixel-by-pixel, in some cases) alter of a Bass sprite, so in that case you combine me actually putting in the time with the fact that it was actually something special done for just one friend, and... well, STILL wouldn't be as lame as wank-person up there, but I might go a bit nuts.

	Well if you come up with an original neat little design, I can see being miffed for five seconds. But some people talk about "base" theft...and that IS just a cropped picture. I do RPG icons a bit, and considering I've done a lot of my own screencaps and still don't care shows how WANKY I think it is. ^^ (Reply to this)(Parent)

Well, I've had my artwork snagged to make icons without my knowledge--since I usually only post fanart on the internet, I really don't see the big deal, as in a way, it's almost complimentary. Yanno, unless that person claimed they drew it. But that never happens (or has the chance to happen).

I think the artist who created the picture being used for the icon in the first place would actually have more of a leg to stand on than someone who took all of five seconds to chop said picture up and throw some song lyrics or witty motto onto it would. And if I didn't get offended by someone taking one of my artworks and make a (pretty nifty IIRC) icon out of it without asking me, then I don't think someone should be so up in arms about someone else taking their icon.

I'm guessing it comes down to the fact that a lot of icon makers are not of the 'drawing art' mold, but graphic design. Thus, it's still 'art,' so people still get possessive over THEIR Creative Child.

Honestly, I'd be flattered if someone used one of my icons--it means they thought it was cool enough to spend one of their precious 3-10 icon places for it.

However, I could see getting a little upset if that person said, 'oh hey, check out this 1337 icon I made!' though. (Didn't happen here though, if I'm reading it right.)

I always thought it would be nice if people at least asked first before taking an icon. I personally wouldn't have any reason to say no to that if it was an icon that I simply cropped and put text on. If it was something I did more to, I'd probably be less inclined to say yes. I have a crappy slow computer with a crappy slow photo program so stuff like that can take a while.

And really, if they're so easy to make then why can't people make their own?

Although I totally agree that the person who had her icon taken flipped out more than necessary. There are better ways to take care of that.

People can't make their own because they don't have the software, generally. And most people are more moral about yanking it in a less than legal fashion than I am.

Besides, every once and awhile someone thinks of an idea you hadn't. That's why you might want someone else's icon. I think it's a bit weird to take one that someone is already using, yes...just cause I tend to associate the icon with that person. But if people toss up a bunch of icons on a community and they eventually end up uncredited on someone's account...who cares? I don't. I'm happy someone liked them. ;)
