Wank: the way it was meant to be seen!
In case you haven't heard, Funimation is re-releasing Dragon Ball Z on DVD in season sets. Under the tagline "The way it was meant to be seen!", they're going all out; re-mastering the footage, re-dubbing the audio for consistent voices throughout, and making Dragon Ball Z widescreen for the very first time. You might say one of these was not a popular decision.

Over at AnimeOnDVD.com back in December, one of many threads is started on the topic, in this case by FUNiRepBlue, one of Funimation's official reps on the AoD boards. She posts an FAQ detailing what's going into the new season sets, including the decision to change the aspect ratio for the release.

Reactions are mixed, with most complaining about the change, some excited about the upcoming set, and pretty much everyone settling on a "wait and see" attitude. Fast forward to last week, when the first of the new box sets began to ship.

So that's what it looks like when a wank goes Super Saiyan.

Gersen: Yes in the end we might gain some "never seen before" footage, maybe even more than we lose, but in the end the resulting movie will just be a transvestite of the original. In the end it's no different than any other type censoring, no different than changing a "little too realistic" gun to a water/laser pistol like our 4Kids friends have done numerous times in the past.

KaidoYuji 8 Shinji-kun: Ugh so basically they are like the old credits in that only FUNimation is credited and then a LITTLE bit of Japanese crew are...
So that means we have the same director, music, original comics..etc that we had on every credits scroll since FUNimation/PIONEER. (even on the movies from Funi are the SAME credits!)

Screencaps are finally posted.

Dread Pirate J.T.: And for the record I was highly considering buying this set. The comparison images they posted a few weeks back didn't look that bad, but as I stated back then, they clearly used scenes that made the cropping look justified, skirted around the real issue and dodging all kinds of bullets fired at them as to what troublesome scenes would look like cropped. I appreciate the remastered video, revised audio, great episodes per disc ratio and low price point, but the cropping just looks so bad I can't buy this. Hopefully one of the little raving otaku "Japan is the motherland!" kiddies in my Japanese class buys it and I can check it out a little more in depth that way. Or someone will upload rips of the .ISO files.

Super Saiyajin Joshua: Well my cousin runs an anime club in Ohio with about 40 members all of which were planning on buying this till I forwarded the screen caps to them. I think Funi really shot themselves in the foot this time. I've bought every piece of crap that Funi has slapped the DBZ logo on and I'm refusing to buy this. I really hope they feel a sting from this one.

Amano07: i'm so angry i'm shaking ... i have never been so pissed off with a DVD release of a anime ever...i hate what FUNimation do with most of their releases (compression artefacts up the ass) but i can live with those.. this just so much worse ...i hope people lose their jobs for this crap. i know they wont... but i'd love to see it happen.

CrazyA$ano: Fear not, friends! I have written a nasty review and started a customer discussion on the subject. Please join in.

AbeChinchilla: Seriously though, DBZ in -Spanish- is the way it was meant to be seen.

So, who's up for season 2?

In Spanish? o.O;

I dunno, I thought FUNi did a pretty decent job with Yu Yu Hakusho.

Oh, good, because it's essential to have consistent voices for the grunts and screams!

If they weren't cropping it, I'd buy it.

Gotta admit, having seen some anime in Spanish (I live in El Paso and we get a lot of Mexican channels), the kid's right. Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, DBZ, all were excellently dubbed.

But... DBZ wasn't originally shot in widescreen... o_O

And the tl;dr explanation for why Funimation went this route ("overscan") is bullshit. Producers of TV animation account for this all the time-- it's called "TV cutoff". You shouldn't need to see what's in those "overscanned" margins, because there's nothing important there =P

Ahh, DBZ. My username was actually a fan-character I made for it, a million years ago, that's since followed me around everywhere. Good times. I tried to get through the scanlations of the manga recently, but I guess either my tastes have evolved or this particular translation was pretty bad. Otherwise, every parody I've ever seen didn't even have to exaggerate. Oi. Not that the dub was ever much better.

Oh, btw, Buttlord GT. Warning: Do not peruse whilst consuming a beverage.

Yeah, I'm sure all those 40 members of that guy's cousin's anime club will -really- suddenly boycott that product. First of all, I refuse to believe that many people care about DBZ, unless they're all 13 year old boys, and second, who listens to their anime club presidents? I know the one at my university was geeky and self-important and we all hated him, and within five weeks 3/4 of the girls had dropped out because he never relented and never let us watch something with bishounen as main characters.

To be fair, the cropping is rather horrible. I don't have money for any boxsets as it is, though, so I have no right to complain. If I had money for boxsets I'd snag a copy of the Dragon Box release off of eBay anyway, since I dislike the American dub.

The DBZ fandom still knows how to wank up a storm. Somehow, that makes me happy.

transvestite of the original

You keep using that vord...

Also... what's the point of widescreening something that wasn't filmed that way? Was there logic behind this decision, or did somebody just completely fail to understand the point?

Once I went into a video place and, no joke, got to overhear a clerk on the phone saying the following:

"No, sir, it's supposed to look like that. See, on a fullscreen movie they actually chop off the sides of the picture to make it fit your TV." *pause* "NO, sir. They do NOT chop off the top and bottom, the picture is a different shape than your TV!"

OK, just because I have to be absolutely sure here...

When they keep saying 'transvestite', they actually mean 'travesty', right?

...right? D:

This is just comedy gold.

For a second there, I almost wanted to buy it, too, then I remembered I only cared about what happened to the characters in the Saiyajin arc.

And then I realized that widescreening something filmed for a full-screen aspect ratio, as pretty much all TV animation is filmed for, is an unrelentingly stupid move and giving people something they really, really didn't ask for and didn't much want in the first place, since it's another unnecessary alteration of a show that doesn't really need that much effort put into making it less interesting than it already is.

Now, make this a Dragonball rerelease and you'll have me interested.

Yes in the end we might gain some "never seen before" footage, maybe even more than we lose, but in the end the resulting movie will just be a transvestite of the original.

I lost it here. I never got it back. :)
