Hubby and I went to the movies yesterday in Kamloops, this is probably the first movie we have seen in about 2 years. We had free passes to go and a $10 GC to be used towards another ticket or towards concession. Since we are short on cash as of late this was great, a chance to get out and do something nice with each other instead of being holed up in our house an hour away (this is important later).

Hubby has been drooling obsessively over Pan's Labrynith, the fairy tale for adults. I'm a bit daft I'll admit and I didn't realize the film was subtitled. It hasn't been anywhere on the previews on tv, nor was it advertised anywhere in the theatre as being subtitled.

At the theatre we went too, they usually show "Low" or "Sold" on the marquee if the picture is getting full, ours didn't show this so we thought we were good. Imagine our surprise when we got into the theatre to find a total of maybe 10 seats left + the entire front row (right down front). I was a bit miffed by this but figured since I could still hear the movie it would be fine. We sat the second row back from the front and waited.

I couldn't see any of the screen, every-little-bit was blurry. I couldn't focus on anything. We found out recently that I have worse vision than I thought I did, and are calling optometrists to get in for an exam, however since I thought I could hear the movie, Id just suck it up cuz hubby wanted to see it.

Well movie starts, and I realized alarmingly that oh crap, I can't even hear the movie cuz its in freaking spanish or something! I tried my hardest to read the subtitles but was giving myself a headache and eventually started to cry from frustration. This vision thing is still really new to me and very scary that I can't see things and I was visibly upset. Hubby said we could leave so we got up about 5 minutes in.

When we walked up to customer service you could tell I was upset, cheeks were flushed, eyes glassy, quiet voice yanno the works. I asked if we could please get our money back and she said no problem, then I mentioned we had paid with passes and that we would like them back. She said "ooh no.. we can't do that, they are non-refundable". I'm sorry what? I got to watch 5 minutes of a blurry movie and you won't give me back my passes!? I got upset and she called over her manager who re-iterated, it states on the back of the pass non-refundable?? My response? Oh you mean the fine print that I can't read?

I found him to be completely unsympathetic, I think he thought I was bullshitting him, I eventually got so frustrated with being looked down on that I started to cry even more in front of everyone and asked for the head office number, as I felt that they expected me to pay to watch a movie I couldn't even understand basically. As soon as I mentioned head office he said that he could give us a pass to another movie that night!

I looked at him and said - In all honesty, it takes us an hour to drive here and an hour to drive home, the next film is not for an hour and to be even more honest, this is the only movie we wanted to see. Plain and simple.

Oh! Well we can give you passes that would have to be used by next Thursday. Thursday huh? My next day off is next Sunday. How's that work for me?

The way he was talking to me I felt like a child who was being scolded for doing something wrong. Eventually I just asked for a free pass to see THAT movie specifically, I didn't want anything else, just to be made whole so we could leave.

Eventually he relented and gave us passes that have to be used before the 24th of this month for that film, I'm going to be very hard pressed to go back to that theatre though.

Now before anyone asks, had I have known it was subtitled, we would have came sooner so that I could find a seat that I could see in, I can't see things that are close, nor far away, it sort of has to be in between. We had planned to come back the next weekend and see if we could get in early so I could find a seat that everything would be good, cuz I really wanted to see this f-ing movie.

So yea. Thats my long story. Im still extremely embarassed that I basically had to be made to cry before he realized I was serious.

The other members of the comm aren't inclined to sympathize.

PSA: Everyone should go see Pan's Labyrinth (or, in "freaking spanish", El laberinto del fauno) right the hell now because it is an utterly. awesome. movie.

It is, in fact, utterly awesome. And it's been getting all sorts of award nominations and so been all over the internet/tv, and been in wide release in the US since Jan 19th, so if you hadn't noticed yet that it's in Spanish with English subtitles, you haven't been paying attention.

Now, maybe I'm reading this wrong, but does the first sentence means that she was in the second row from the front? If so, how the heck does siting in the front row (aka a seat closer to the screen) would make things so much more readable for her?

I found it less awesome than Mirrormask, but it certainly had nothing to do with the "freaking spanish".

(Am I the only one who, now as an adult, is baffled by people who have trouble with subtitles, having grown up on a constant diet of fansubbed anime?)

I'd feel bad for her, since my mom's had shitty eyesight for as long as I can remember, but seriously. Not the movie theater's fault they were idiots and didn't check stuff about the movie beforehand. And the whole 'omigosh it was in Spanish or something!' comment of hers made me roll my eyes.

I'm kind of glad I live in a country where just about everything that isn't in our language gets subbed. That way, we get used to subtitles and don't bitch about movies having subtitles at all. We bitch about literal translations and bad attempts at rhyming instead, which is much more fun.

NO BASHY EL LABERINTO. NO. That movie whooped my ass and was FANTASTIC. (I may never be able to watch it again, because, you know, holy shit are they actually going to oh FUCK yes they ARE did he just down a SHOT after aaaaaaaaaagh) But it's AMAZING. Guillermo Del Toro completely outdid himself on that one.

That said, while the OP is being rather a bint, I know that I was not prepared for it when I saw it- a FYC copy, and I'd heard nothing about it previously, so the whole room mistakenly thought it was a children's story- and it can be more than a little jarring.

Maybe she should put her hands to her forehead and look out through the eyeballs on her palms.

I had some problems with the character of Ofelia, but damn, The Pale Man's gonna be keeping my nightmares jumping...with glee.

So... she didn't check to see if the movie was subtitled, they didn't arrive early, they didn't ask if there would be good seats, but they got compensated after walking out? And she then complains on the Internet about "bad service"? I think she could have abstained from complaining.

Hey, speaking of Guillermo del Toro, has anyone else seen El Espinazo del diablo? That was one great ghost story.

Homegirl has probably never worked a customer service job, or else she'd have an inkling that there are limits to what a clerk/cashier/etc can do. I work at a copy shop; I can give you free copies (to a point) if you're unhappy, I can negotiate internet time/fax prices with you, but there are things that are just out of my control. I can't give you color prints on the cheap, I can't Photoshop your sister out of the picture, and I sure as hell can't replace the copiers on cue because they're acting up on you.

I imagine it's something similar with this theater -- they did their damdest to satisfy her within company policy (especially since she was technically at fault), and she refused to meet them halfway. She gets no sympathy from me.

Out of curiosity, what mystical force was preventing your husband from reading the fine print?

"cuz its in freaking spanish or something" made me LOL long and hard, esp. imagining it in a SHRILL OUTRAGED voice.

Is it really that difficult for an american or anglophone person in general to -distinguish- Spanish? Or is it only difficult if you live under a rock in the Appalachians? I'm asking honestly, I have no idea.

I want to see that film :(

She was kind of wanky when it came to asking for the extra passes (though understandable since she did live a while away), but I honestly feel sorry for her. She'd only recently found out that she had severe eyesight problems, she was looking forward to a first movie in two years, and it wasn't her who'd been looking it up. She's got a bad attitude to the language, but in an English-speaking country it's usual for us to be accustomed to everything made in our native language.

So wait. She went in with the full knowledge that she needed glasses and would not be able to see the film, but got upset because she couldn't understand it? Uh, if you go around without being able to see properly, the world will inconvenience you. A lot. And it is in no way obliged to compensate. And I'm saying this with the sympathetic view of someone with bad eyesight since the age of seven.

...you had free passes. You didn't pay. All you really lost was a couple of hours and, okay, the money spent on petrol.

My response? Oh you mean the fine print that I can't read?

But surely your husband can read? I'm very confused.

Pan's Labyrinth was a fantastic movie though.

When my sister and I went to see it, we didn't realize it was subtitled in English either. Brain block, I guess. But my sister used it to hone her Spanish skills and I'm more than used to subtitles. I've never heard Spanish used for such a long time, and I hadn't realized what a lovely language it was. So hey, learn something new everyday!

To sound like a squeamish little girl, my least favorite part of the movie might have been the giant potato bugs. Gragh.

Other than that, I loved it. Not what I was at all expecting, but gorgeous and captivating. Even in 'freaking Spanish'.

I just found it utterly predictable and the contrast with the civil war very passe. It seemed to think it was cleverer than it actually was. I did enjoy some of the imagery though.
