Please, won't someone think of Herodotus? He thinks of you... telling funny anecdotes.
So [info]trinityofone saw an advance screening of 300 and she didn't like it very much. The language is rather overwrought (she begins the review by calling the film "the most disgusting piece of pro-Iraq war propaganda I have ever seen"), but there's no actual wank to be had until Page 3, when people start to disagree. Some are polite, some are sarcastic and mildly offended, some show a curious aversion to addressing her as "you", and some suggest that she "go commit 45-caliber fellatio, you dumb cunt". (Hey, at least they're using the second person.)

And a very special visit from our friend Rann.

I like how someone on the third page finally points out that if the movie is supposed to represent US vs Iraq in a pro-US way, then shouldn't the Spartans have been invading Persia, and not the other way around?

People who identify with being leftist and yet encourage censorship have never really jived well with me.

Ew. Frank Miller. I wish he'd stop blighting my friends page. First LJ, now here. Tsk, tsk.

In other news, I think one of the VERY WORST THINGS about this movie is that there is no gay. Ancient Spartans... and no gay. Sigh. Frank Miller really can't do anything right, can he?

A little gem, when she answers this very well thought-out post (emphasis mine)

Just like the historical homosexuality among the Spartans is deflected onto the Athenians, and other types of sexual perversion onto the Persians.

I'm going to be totally shallow for a moment and admit I'm only seeing the movie for the special effects, cinamatography, and hot sweaty men in leather underwear fighting lots of guys in really awesome costumes with slow motion. When I saw the trailer I was actually kind of dissappointed it looked pretty crappy but I was still recovering from the backdraft of fire from my ovaries spontaneously exploding at the hot sweaty halfnaked men.

Anonymous: I've seen the trailers. The Persian Army is not all monsters. The Immortals are garbed in a quasi-samurai like look.

Trinityofone: If you see the full film, you'll discover that the Immortals are mutated beneath their masks. There are some regular foot-soldiers, yes, but even those are pierced or "disfigured" in some way--or, gasp, dark-skinned!

I know she doesn't mean to imply that being dark-skinned makes you a mutant monster, but her choice of wording still struck me as unintentionally pretty, uh, unfortunate.

Pick up any graphic novel, manga, or anime and you'll find the same exact elements. The 300 is no exception. Perhaps the lack of overt anime and Japanese elements in its style or plot elements blinds the reviewer from noticing this.

Bzuh? Since when do mainstream American comics = anime/manga? And does this person not realize that American people still actually make comics and cartoons?
