Once upon a time...
Once upon a time, in a wonderful land full of profit, the good company Disney, not content with its other triumphs, decided to go out and establish itself on Broadway. And thus it was that Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, Mary Poppins, The Lion King and Aida came to the fair city of New York and delighted the hearts of children and adults everywhere. But not all were pleased with the works of Disney, and seeing the happy faces of children spilling out of Disney musicals darkened the hearts of posters on Broadway internet boards. A great evil began to arise, and the dark-hearted ones attempted to bring doubt to those who loved the good Disney. "The Disneyfication of Broadway is bad!" they cried. "Where are the days of original musicals? Why must Disney take so many theaters?" But Disney carried on with their work, undaunted.

And then it was that Disney decided to expand its happy empire with The Little Mermaid. Rumors began to swirl, encouraged by the dark hearts of the doubting internets posters: how will this be staged? Will there be water involved? Will it be as wretched as Tarzan? But their most insidious tool of evil was.... casting rumors. "Who will play the roles?" the innocently curious people asked, not knowing the danger. And then it was that someone claimed that Norm Lewis would play Triton, the father of Ariel the mermaid. And then it followed that wank exploded in the dark internet realm of Broadwayworld, for the rumored Ariel is white, and lo, Norm Lewis is African American.

A great battle was waged with terrible cost. FOAnatic lead the charge with an inability to imagine just how this will work out:
Please someone explain this to me.

Ariel is white.

I'm all for color-blind casting, but when it's believeable.

This, I don't get.

Sweeping generalizations were made by Fenchurch (who rather enthusiastically throws him/herself into such threads):
The debate itself is racist. Having a problem with a person in a role solely based on their skin color is racist.

Period. End of Story. There's no getting around it, no verisimilitude arguments, they don't hold water. If you can't see past the skin color of a person, you're a racist.

Plain and simple.

Fenchurch and FOAnatic continued to duel (My argument is right, his argument debases humanity), and others joined in. As time went on, some fell to fighting over the concept of color-blind casting, and others spoke of mermaid genetics and discussed the sad discrimination against giant lobsters and bird actors in the musical industry. Some tried to walk a middle-ground and come up with explanations as to why a merman could be black and his merdaughter be white. But the darkest hour came when Fenchurch implied that those in disagreement with him were members of the KKK:
If it's a problem for you, then you're more than welcome to put on a white sheet and protest in front of the theater, or in frony of Disney's offices.

Wildly exaggerated rhetoric flew. Those who could threw up the defenses of mockery and graphics, but still the uncomprehending raged on:
You obviously don't know me at all....Or anything about biracial families...which exist all over the country...there are families who have a black parent and a white parent and blonde-haired/blue eyed kids....look at the Singerl twins...perfect example...That's all I'm gonna say about this...I can't educate the totally STUPID!!!!!!!

Will there be a happy ending, or will chaos rule the land? Good Disney didn't write this one, but since it involves the evil internet, I doubt the perfect ending is in sight.

You know, I don't really care how a Little Mermaid broadway show will turn out.

I just want Disney to do something new and animated so the fanartists will have someone new to draw dirty pictures of.

There already is a musical version of The Little Mermaid. It's called Once, On This Island and when I saw it it had an all black cast (though sadly, I'm told that is not the case anymore).

And while Fenchurch is right, he's also making my side look stupid and I'd like it if he shut his face.

It's Broadway and Disney and racism. This will not end well. Right now all we can do is situate ourselves near enough to see it explode but far enough away to avoid being hit by flying rubble.

The Little Mermaid is about people with fish-tails that live in giant cities underwater and have bad tendencies to fall in love with handsome human princes, and also giant evil octopus-witches with pet talking (sort of) eels, and including Jamaican singing lobsters, and these people are worried about genetics?

Hellooooo, adoption?

I mean, if you're really going to be serious about the whole "a black merman can't have a white merchild" thing, what about adoption?!

I guess I have too much of this thing we call logic.

"The Disneyfication of Broadway is bad!" they cried. "Where are the days of original musicals? Why must Disney take so many theaters?" But Disney carried on with their work, undaunted.

Sound like the sort of people who whine when anime and manga get licensed.

OH MY GOD THEY'RE MERPEOPLE FOR GOD'S SAKE!

They're not real! The papa could be purple and Ariel could be lime green and it wouldn't make a lick of difference! NOT REAL! Mythical! This is almost as annoying as the people who go on and on about what "real" dragons look like.

Mister Matt: She could be adopted or a result of her mother having an affair with a hot young merstud, which would explain why she feels so different, sad and isolated all the time. Her mother was probably beheaded for her indiscretions by King Triton the Eighth himself while Ariel looked on at the tender young age of four and it was so emotionally scarring, it caused her to act out in rebellious defiance against the man (I don't believe he's a God at all) who viciously murdered her mother in a public execution and now, FOAnatic, don't you feel ASHAMED?? I demand an apology at once. Read between the lines, people. Ever heard of subtext? GOD!

Hehehehe, merstud...

OK, so here's how it goes: Disney takes over Broadway, so the standard hyper-commercial Broadway shows are pushed off-Broadway, thus displacing the still-pretty-commercial off-Broadway shows off-off-Broadway...so to find something creative, you'll have to go at least off-off-off-Broadway, while the avant-garde theatre will have been displaced so far off Broadway that it'll actually be getting closer to Broadway again.

A few more rounds, and Broadway will be nothing but pretentious surrealist performance art.

Honestly, I'm more concerned about a) um... water? and b) apparently they will be using TLM as the replacement for Beauty and the Beast.

I've had the concept cast recording of TLM: The Musical (with Kerry Butler) for a while now, and I have to say the music is pretty good. I was worried as to how they would do it, what with the title character not having a voice for the latter half, but they managed to make it work (she sings, but it's her thoughts - there's a very lovely song where Eric sings and she sings her thoughts back, but he can't hear them).

On another note, I have only seen one stage production of Beauty and the Beast, and that was the recent German production with Leah Delos Santos, who was the original German Belle when the production first opened in Stuttgart. And she's Filipino. But she is absolutely stunning and adorable and a wonderful singer to boot. I <3 her to bits. So yeah. Stop complaining and pray for a pretty actress who can sing and pull of the role. Unlike Toni Braxton's turn at Belle.

Wtf are these people smoking? It's not like color-blind casting is New And Exciting, and anyone who's seen Norm Lewis in the Les Miz revival has already had a big heaping platter of the discrepancies they're bitching and moaning about. If a Latina Fantine can give birth to an Asian ickle Cosette who magically grows up into a Filipina teenage Cosette, whose daddy is being pursued by a black police inspector who was Roma in the book anyway... what on earth is so mindfucky about black Triton and white Ariel?

Ayezur's Theory of Color/Genderblind Casting:

If it's a show that deals with issues of race or gender or both, i.e. West Side Story, A Raisin in the Sun, and others, then it doesn't exactly work audiences don't always have the best imagination, so it's in the best interest of the production to cast along racial and gender lines. This also goes for if you're trying a new staging of an old classic in an attempt to Make A Point or somesuch.

In all other cases, who gives a fuck?
