So Jeffery Wells of Hollywood-Elsewhere.com doesn't want Eddie Murphy to win the Oscar, and says so:

It may be too late and it may be a futile notion, but it's time for all good people to rise up and band together in order to stop Eddie Murphy from winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. If anyone wants to launch a website to help amplify this feeling and (who knows?) maybe trigger a turnaround of opinion, I'll contribute $100 bucks...seriously.
(his bolding)

And people wank in the comments, everything from if Coming To America was a decent movie to the merits of Djimon Honsou.

And of course, transvestite prostitutes are everywhere.

Oh yeah, contains spoilers for Dreamgirls and maybe some other movies, so be warned.

Eddie Murphy was amazing in Dreamgirls. I will spank anyone who disagrees.

Yeah, I know. It was hard to believe it was the same guy who played Buckwheat on SNL all the time.

My favorite performance in the film, though, was Jennifer Hudson. Although I'm still pulling for Amanda Breslin to win, since Little Miss Sunshine owned everything.

My favorite part of the movie was the "Steppin' To The Bad Side" sequence though. That rocked!

My question is why Mr. Wells is not trying to prevent a true crime against cinema: letting Eddie Murphy make movie after movie that essentially stars him, him in a fat suit, and him in heavy makeup.

Eh, I think Norbit pretty much cancels out Dreamgirls. If Eddie Murphy wants to stop making horrifyingly derogatory movies, he's more than welcome to an Oscar.

Is Jeffrey Wells the same guy who wanted to Stop Return of the King from winning best picture? Because I remember whoever's plea having a very similar "I am calling upon you, people of the world, to prevent this sudden but inevitable travesty" ring to it.

I read the phrase "stop Eddie Murphy" and desperately wished that it ended with "from making more movies about fat people." Every time a commercial for Norbit comes on, I can feel my brain cells committing suicide in despair.

As for the Oscar nom, I thought he was surprisingly good in Dreamgirls, though my vote would have gone for Jamie Foxx instead.

I haven't seen Dreamgirls, but I'm always a sucker for people who you don't expect giving Oscar-caliber performances getting noms (Like Marky Mark this year)

If only Michael Sheen were nominated. His portrayal of Tony Blair in The Queen was really fucking hot excellent. Oh Tony.

*yawn*

Jeff Wells does this ever Oscar season:

Pick a film/performance that's a front runner for "the win."

Demand that people do whatever they can to stop this win at all cost.

Repeat ad nauseum.

Only thing that's changed since I first encountered him was that he's not writing for a web site that has a toilet seat on it. :p

Because the Academy Awards are, and always have been, TOTALLY nonbiased and TOTALLY about quality. And they are NEVER, EVER wrong!

It's not Actor Who Did A Great Job In Every Movie He's Been In, youall. I'm not understanding how some people seem to consider that Academy awards are cumulative things, like they represent *all* a person's work instead of someone's performance in a single role. Which is IS.

Everyone gets duds. Some people are in more duds than otherwise-- Cuba Gooding Jr. can't seem to get a decent script no matter what, for example. So what? He was considered to have done in a single role and was recognized for it.
