Y'know, Mary Ellen, you've never been shy about sharing your opinions about how ClarkLex could be run better, but I have to say I'd be a lot more likely to listen with an open mind if you could manage to express that opinion without obviously slanting it to try and make somebody you don't like look bad.

And she gets this from what exactly? Jesus, ME has never been anything but nice about the infected boil on the ass of SV fandom, aka Sarah T. I'm starting to think that Sarah T. is actually the Borg Queen running a BNF hive mind.

Perhaps it was Mary Ellen's claim that Sarah T. called the clueless fen "trolls" when she didn't even comment *at all* onlist in that thread, nor did she call them trolls in her blog. Stupid, but not deliberate trolls.

Even Mary Ellen admits in her response to Sarah's first post that *she was wrong* and Sarah said nothing of the sort.

When I see stuff like that, it sounds like even more of a smackdown than it should, because where I grew up, Mary Ellen was a name you called your daughter when she'd been bad. (Sort of akin to 'Little Madam')

So in my head Sarah and Livia come off sounding much more patronising than they are being.

she's run LISTS before? whoa.

i used to think she meant well with the voice of academic reason things. SV politics, at least among the bnfs there, seem to strongly resemble 7th grade in-group politics, with, you know, the junior varsity cheerleaders. i've often felt that the people who want to be cool more than they want to be [insert adj: nice, reasonable, whatever] get what they deserve.

I gotta wonder what would happen to us if the Smallville and Harry Potter fandoms disappeared off the face of the earth suddenly, in some twisted fen version of the Rapture.

We'd still have DomLijah, of course...and the Monkees fen are beginning to become a recurring theme...but still, I think we'd lose a good 50%, at least, of our wank material.

Oh, I think other things would rise to fill the void. Fandom in an inherently wanky place.

DomLijah will go ever on - because of their firm "PR Devil" stance, these people can and will believe through anything Dom or Elijah ever do, including getting married, having kids, moving continents apart from each other and declaring publicly that they are not gay, not a couple, and freaked the fuck out by the psychos compiling reams of "evidence" to contrary. And they'll give us a lot of material along the way.

"RPS is evil and you're all going to hell/No, it isn't and how you dare you specify what I can fantasize about" will go ever on. So will "How dare you critique my story/say my character is a Mary Sue/correct my grammar/suggest I get a beta." And "You're an evil plagiarising/icon-stealing bitch/No, I'm not, you're just jealous because I took an idea and did it better than you."

And of course, the glorious "Everyone who reads/posts to/has heard of but not publicly denounced FW is a cunt who deserves a fate worse than death."

Were Smallville and HP to disappear in a cloud of smoke tomorrow, I think we'd be just fine...

Some people don't care for the "group-defining" chatter that some less-sophisticated fans engage in, by which I mean the thoughtless bashing of characters, especially female characters, viewed as an obstacle to their OTP (one former regular on CL used to have a sig advocating that all the "bitches" on SV, in which group she included just about every female character, die), the conviction that the show really is about their OTP and any deviation from this is a sign of a vast conspiracy against them, the feeling of entitlement to the plot and character arcs they desire.

Yes, that's all one sentence.

I wish I could claim these words, but they're from a very smart person who, sadly, left SV fandom because of BNF bitchery.

Is there some circular logic going on?
1) The list is huge (1600 members)
2) High OT traffic in a huge list causes people to leave the list
3) Therefore for the good of the list, OT discussions must be smacked down.

So, what's wrong with people leaving the group? Smaller group => less modding needed => more ability to socialize/discuss things that may wander OT => more fun. It takes 15 minutes to make a Yahoo newsgroup, 15 minutes to email your buddies about it, and then you're in business in less time than it takes to type a rant.

Seems to me like the huge rule-bound groups would just be a pain. What am I missing?

The bitterness, the hatred, the WANK! On all sides. How exciting! Man, I need a freaking scorecard to keep track of y'all. Now does this one like that one or not like that one... hmmm... I'm lost already. All I know is I have friends on both sides. How did I not know any of this was going on? Oh yeah, I spend all my time in Mag7 fandom and I spend it complaing about how nice they all are.

Can't y'all just wear colors... or maybe shirts and skins? Actually, I think I'll just stay out of this one.

And what's up with the paranoia about BNF's. {scratches head} BNF's are sooooooo last year's news. Drat! I missed the memo again! Must find the person in charge of [info]user fandom_memos [info]user and get myself added to the list...

It's espcially fun when you throw down with a friend of a friend and you had no idea they were friends of friends. See, if you ignore the group affiliations and concentrate on individuals, you too can piss off everyone!
