You Dun Like Fanfic! You H8ters!
Over on [info]torch_wood, [info]sadbhyl has some things to say about the State of the Comm:

[info]torch_wood from the beginning has been open and welcoming of all different forms of expression related to this show, including fanfiction. In the user info for the community, it specifically states, "All Torchwood fanfic is welcome here." Twice polls were taken on the issue of keeping or removing fanfic from the community, and twice the overwhelming response was to keep it (299-181 in the latest poll, taken in December). Due consideration was given to those who didn’t want to be “bombarded” with fic. Not one but two different ways of filtering the community were presented, and the most draconian posting protocol of any fan community out there was implemented to keep a minority of the community from being imposed upon. But still the hate continues. To those who complain about people not following the posting rules, who say, “The instructions are right there in the sticky for the comm,” I would like to point out the bullet list immediately above those instructions which clearly indicate ways to read the community without any fanfic. For those who say, “There’s torchwood_fic to post fanfic in,” I would agree, and also point out that there are other communities for icons, for vidding, and for discussions. If we all went to our preferred communities, what purpose then is torch_wood? \

Apparently some fic-posters are starting to bend and outright break the posting rules, and they're being smacked down. This makes [info]sadbhyl unhappy. Some kudos, some disagreement, for two pages. Oh, and the pipes up, with a rare cool head.

that doesn't look terribly wanky to me

I can't comment on the kerfuffle because, honestly, I sympathize with the people complaining about the "bombardment" of fic. That Torchwood community is kind of overwhelming with the number of posts. If I didn't have it heavily filtered, I'd probably be grouching about it too.

I just took a look at the comm and randomly chose a day. Out of the 20 posts, at least 13 (didn't count how many locked posts there were) were fic posts. That's not something I want on my f-list if I don't care for fics that much.

OTOH, the mods have set up tags so you can read the comm without fic (and I think one so you can read it without fic, icons, vids, or any other creative fanworks), and set up RSS feeds now that LJ lets you do an RSS feed for just posts with a particular tag, so you could friend the RSS feed and not have to deal with the fic at all.

The mods there have bent over backward trying to accommodate everybody, and done a pretty good job, I think.

True. And I suspect that many American group members (like me) are there primarily for bit torrents, not fic.

That would be the reason I lurk around Torchwood fandom yes.

My two attempts at Torchwood fic can be ignored. They were prompts and I was suckered into taking them.

There was this massive kerfuffle a while back in [Bad username: 206_bones"], which is the general Bones comm, where the mods decided they were disallowing fanfic and icon posts. Some people were pleased, some were not, polls were made and people argued and/or left the comm in fits of anger. Good times.

Bah, not wanky enough. I'm hoping this turns into wank about JB's cock:

I posted this on clairvoyant_wank a few days ago. It was definitely hovering on the border of wank (I've not checked back since, really), but while people were sniping at each other they were being polite. Though I kinda threw myself into the comments after that, which was fun.

I dunno, I thought the "expressing your opinion that posting rules should be followed made me feel worthless!" exchange was rather wanky.

Oh, goodness yes. That "Protoplasmica" person needs to grow a spine. And a skin. Though I guess if she's protoplasm, she couldn't help lacking them.

Not wanky. Kerfuffle from anti-fic or pro-fic community members *might* be, but this just reads like a sensible mod post.

Hope this wasn't a grudge f_w.

I looked at that and thought "what anti-fic bias?" It looked to me like sadbhyl was being oversensitive and/or stirring shit up. How can you have an anti-fic bias in a community that's more than 50% fanfic posts?

But as often seems to happen in torch_wood, the wank miraculously failed to appear despite severe provocation. I don't know why Torchwood fandom is so unwanky, but I thank God for it.

It all died down after the mods posted another poll about fic. Clearly the allure of the ticky box is enough to distract the average wanker at least.

I think it's because the show provides us with too much non-metaphorical wank material; we're all much too happy to engage in a lot of petty bickering. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go back to listing all of the canon pairings on the show, and then making guesses at which ones will become canon next season (hint: all of them).
