con ... nooga?
First Chattanooga, TN brought us political wank last fall when former mayor Bob Corker was involved in a throughly nasty Senate race with Harold Ford. Now it's bringing convention wank to us!

See, Chattanooga is host city to four cons: Chattacon, LibertyCon, HallowCon, and FantaSciCon. For a city the size of Chattanooga, this is nothing short of impressive -- especially since both Chattacon and LibertyCon are over twenty years old.

But some fans in the area, in their wisdom, became /convinced/ the city needed a fifth con. An "Ultimate Fandom Convention", in fact. From their website: "We want to bring the best event for the Fans of Science Fiction, Horror, Fantasy, Gaming, Anime, Cosplay, Book Enthusiast, Fan Films, Artist, Celebrities, Comics... " Wait, this is kind of familiar, isn't it? It sounds an awful lot like ... Dragon*con. And that name ... it's hard to avoid noticing that the name "Con-nooga" is an inversion of "Chatta-con".

All this might seem like the usual con-fandom infighting Chattanooga fandom is locally known to support -- until you look at Connooga's forums. The nameless organisers of Connooga are wanking away, determined to ... well, I'm not sure what they're determined to do, but it seems to involve beating out Chattacon somehow. Unsurprisingly, therefore, they've chosen to site their con at the same hotel as Chattacon, barely a month after Chattacon closes.

Highlights: "We want to make this a Convention for YOU."

"I want horror!" "No, gaming!" "No, make it family friendly!" "More panels!" "Less partying!" "More partying!" "More celebrities! (Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Lucy Lawless)" uh, guys, this is a first year con. with what money? "Fix registration!" "Child-friendly during the day, party at night!" "Horror!" "Gaming!" "Comics!"

The beat thread, imho, is entitled "Other CONVENTIONS! - What went Wrong? What went Right?!", and starts off with an eight-point bullet list of things Connooga's organisers disliked about ... oddly enough, Chattacon. Specifically. Mentioned in the post, even. Unsurprisingly, Chattacon's director shows up in the thread, concealing a rapier of snark beneath velvet curiosity.

Equally of note is this thread, started by the "family-friendly" guy on the forums, pushing his little red family-friendly wagon. Note how the thread closes (as of right now) with this gem: "Maybe we can get some lady to tattoo her boobs or stomach like that lady from the Super Bowl!"

That's very family-friendly, dear.

Edit: I forgot to include the best comment (iRL, sadly) on the wank so far: "They're in the Choo Choo? Well, at least they're in the right place for the train wreck this is going to be."

Disclaimer: I'm involved with Hypericon, and I think these guys are idiots. That tone may come across in this wank report.

And if this local wank fails to be of interest, I discovered this discussion of volunteerism at cons.

Wank from my hometown! I lived there until I was 25, and I never knew there were cons there until about a year ago.

Ah, cons...there's a reason I don't go. Still, I want to hand it to Con-nooga for having the worst name I've ever heard! And the wankiest of beginnings!

Ew, noogies.

And... no, it's not just you on the "these guys are idiots" train. There's a whole lot of naive enthusiasm, and a very strange hate-on for Chattacon, but not much else. I somehow doubt that NoogieCon is ever going to get off the ground, much less be a second DragonCon in its very first year.

I do, in fact, know where the registration crap got started -- Chattacon prints out your badge on the spot; they don't do preprinted badges. This year, the computer system went bonkers, resulting in looooong lines -- Dragon*con style lines. You see the result.

What amuses the hell out of me is the fact that Chattaconners have been objecting to the ChooChoo as a con location basically since it went there, and yet this competing "protest" con is going to be in the same bad location. I can't wait to see how well that works for them.

Hell, DragonCon wasn't DragonCon in its very first year. It was a modest little convention in a medium-sized downtown hotel that had a pretty nifty consuite. It took many years for it to grow into the nexus of geekdom that it is today.

Did you want the most recent one, or the wanks of past years? This panel is only about the most recent wank; the past wanks are at 2:42 on Sunday in the B building of the fifth hotel. I think that's the Holiday Inn ... Anyway you have to go through the other hotel first and cross the street ...[blahblahblah] Enjoy the con! :D

As for the link to this DragonCon post, I can only say that I have heard the line, "She's worked here xx years now and still hasn't slept with me" an awful lot from guys when introducing colleagues, especially at not very formal events like cons. I find this joke extremely dumb and make a mental note of guys who think this is funny, but as a reason to stop working on something she loves, if that's the only complaint she has against him, this poster is going a bit far, imo...

Gee, and I thought Chattacon was only causing wank with its art room, by failing to collect sales tax and then telling artists they had to pay it now out of their base sales numbers. Good to know there's wank all around, then!

Since I couldn't get to the actual wank, I just read the D*C link. Wow, that [info]rick_day was a great guy. Really. Where can I meet an asshole like him? Oh, right, the con. Anyway, if that Brian guy is as bad as reported, someone needs to knee him in his small (okay, microscopic) package wearing steel toe boots. Repeatedly. Considering they have proof of the joke. *sigh* What you say to your friends is not necessarily what you say to people who paid to be there and/or are volunteering their time. Simple concept.

"We want to make this a GREAT, SUCCESSFUL, MEANINGFUL Con."

First of all, when I hear the term Con, I actually think of Ocean's 11. But that's neither here nor there.

Furthermore, I don't want my Cons to be Deep and Meaningful Life Experiences, I want them to be fun. But that's just me.

I fail at Funny.

Dude, my first con I ran was completely chaotic, messy, and tons of fun.

Ah, my first con I ran and the first con I attended. Thank you, LotR slash.

Hell, we had about fifty people show up, including one from England, one from New Zealand, and someone who filmed it with con-goers permission.

I want more cons like that, not grudgecons and the like.

Well, damn. I said I'd never shell out for a journal fen account unless I made fandom_wank. Now that multiple people have linked to the Dragon*Con thread, I have.

Chattacon is the only place I can ever think of where I faked a cell phone call to get out of a gaming event. When the pay-per-view in your hotel is more interesting than the con you're attending, something is wrong. If they're wondering where the gamers went - we left because the guy who runs your gaming events is unoragnized.

Unsurprisingly, therefore, their con is made of fail. There's only so many times you can get money out of the same group of people, and if the choice is between an experienced con committee and a group of first-time bozos who by the sound of it couldn't find their asses with both hands ...

Panya,

It's fun to have opinions, isn't it? The problem arises when you start putting words in other's mouths.

If you're "involved" with HyperiCon, it might be as part of the volunteer pool. I don't recall putting you on staff. And I certainly don't recall authorizing you to speak for HyperiCon. You WILL NOT spread ill will in our name. Drama like this, we don't need.

If you want to express yourself, great, that's your right. If you're trying to speak for HyperiCon, kindly shut your hole. Clear enough?

As for ConNooga, I'll have an informed opinion _after_ they've held their first year.
