Whoa, dudes, I haven't been here in ages. But this one is...special.

You're not my friend, so neener. Or, I have left fandom, except I haven't.

It's very long indeed, and it's extremely difficult to detect a main point, but I think one can sum it up thusly:

-- I am too speshul for fandom. No, wait, I am totally speshul enough for fandom, but LJ, like, blows.

-- LJ people are not really your friends. They are sycophantic mouth-breathers who DO NOT APPRECIATE MY TALENT.

-- it is not about the self-aggrandizement, it's about the Story. CAPITAL S, people. Only plebes use the lower case.

-- if you aren't going to write to the best of your ability, don't write at all. Because, of course, the author bats it out of the park every time.

-- Paging Captain Pretension: if you're American, and you use British spelling in an essay? Yeah, mmhm. Okay.

-- I might have had more, but my eyes are glazing over trying to look back at the essay.

Heyyyyy, plenty of Americans use British spelling, after all.. it's worked for Madona.. heh.

As for the tl;dr.. my eyes started crusting over at the second "and so forth"..

Guess this just proves how little I care about her specialness, but then, I have a medical excuse. I suffer from Belzer's Syndrome, it leads to a lack of the brain chemical Givesafuck.

Nobody writes Tolkien's hobbits. Some might think they do, but no, they really don't.

It's interesting to me that unlike in, say, Harry Potter fandom, where someone will outright post something inflammatory and then other people who disagree will respond and the whole fandom gets stirred up, all seems quiet and civil in the land of hobbitslash, but people are apparently secretly reading negative spin and nasty motivations into everything you do and don't do, becoming simmering cauldrons of resentment which bubble over into tl;dr essays like this.

Makes me glad I'm only a marginal part of hobbitslash, just there to read the pr0n.

You don't have to be talented to get people to read and comment on your Frodo/Sam story; you just have to write it. I've wandered again. Most of the time, fandom is fun. Because feedback is all fanfic authors get!! Feedback is all there is for fanfic authors. Like feedback. I read something and enjoy it, I comment. Especially if you're an author yourself.

Don't ask me if it's an accurate summary. There's no way in hell I'm making my way through eighteen pages of that shit.

There were potatoes and coffee in LoTR? I forgot this part. Then again, I read the story ages ago when I was a kid, so I probably forgot a lot.

IIRC, way back in the day there used to be a comics fanfic writer who went by "Me". This isn't the same person, is it? That would make me a sad panda.

What I have left is the daily assault on my temper and my sanity that lj was. A friend of mine frequently rolls her eyes and insists that lj is simply some university's sociology experiment and there's a bunch of students cloistered away somewhere, studying the effects of stupidity on the common fan. And more and more, I tend to agree with her. Because lj, for someone like me, is sort of like a one-way glass, through which I watch people who call themselves my 'friends' say and do things that I would not tolerate in a stranger on the street, let alone an actual friend.

Funny, but I read shit like this and wonder what I'm doing wrong.

I have no enemies on LJ. I never get into fights, especially not over something so frivolous as fandom. I've never banned anyone from posting on my LJ. I've never friended someone only to have them get overly familiar. And I've never had anyone treat me badly, or felt forced to put up with shitty online behavior.

What am I doing wrong, to miss out on such drama, I ask? Why, oh why, is my LJ experience so pleasant and peaceful? How come this person's such a drama magnet, and I'm not?

Gee, I wonder.

Because I didn't come to fandom for the 'personal' relationships...

Okay, I just burst out laughing at that, because it's almost exactly what every scheming, nasty, two-faced reality-TV show contestant says. Doesn't matter if it's America's Next Top Model or Top Chef--the second one of the hamsters opens their mouth to say "I'm not here to make friends," you know which one is the Asshole. And the Asshole always ends up wondering why all the other contestants hate them so much.

I was never there to make 'contacts' or to beef up my List so that bazillions would flock to me and comment upon my every word. I was there for the Story.

It's easy enough to stay on the periphery of fandom on LJ and not get personally involved--assuming you really don't want to. Using an LJ account to read and post in communities, without ever using it as a journal, is one way. Posting your fandom-related meta to appropriate communities, rather than your own journal, is another. If you want to keep people at arms' length on LJ, it's not that fucking hard. Really, it's not.

The rest of it? Total tl;dr. [skims] Yep.

The wannabe-British spellings are like the extra nuts on this wanky sundae...

Er. Hi, Aratlithiel.

The secret to enjoying yourself in any fandom or hobby is not to obsessively invest your soul into it. Neither LJ nor the unworthies (cough) on your f-list held a gun to your head and forced you to track and TIME the people visiting your site. Really, it didn't give you the warm fuzzies knowing that you had a shitload of visitors reading your work? Did each one really have to write you a personal note? Would you then complain about the spam?

Sheeeeeesh. Hobbits. They're just a bunch of hairy, short guys.

I was compelled to defend (among other things) my use of the word 'upside', as in, "Are you completely off your head?" she hissed, thwacking him upside said head. The editor declared it anachronistic (she didn't like 'thwack', either), to which I replied that it was actually circa 1600 and so not an anachronism.

Wait wait wait. This was about hobbitfic? And now we're talking anachronisms? And hobbits ca. 1600?

And I rarely let go of a point if I think I'm right,

Ah, LotR. The fandom that got my very first porn story. *hugs her Merry/Pippin smut* Best compliment I ever got was how I didn't turn Hobbits to Elves when the clothes came off.

And that was on Yahoo. I missed the great Hobbittimes on LJ.

Now I just watch the HP people. I'm sure that's about the same level of wank.

*pets the little tl;dr essay writer and goes back to ignoring her*

Is it bad that my main thought when I skimmed it and saw the sociology experiment line was how they were experiments in experiments in experiments and the entire concept of LJ was going to collapse into a sociology black hole.

Plus she just made use of one of the most common pseudo-cide excuses just makes me giggle. A lot.

Holy shit that is some tl;dr. I tried, but the Confetti Background From Hell raped my corneas and left me with a migraine. And for a feedback whore, there's only one tiny feedback link — maybe she'd be happier if she just posted a "comment" link in giant text at the top of the page.

As an American who uses primarily British spellings, I have to defend it, because it's not necessarily pretentious: I read mostly British books as a kid and so British spellings look "correct" to me. I use British spellings in IM, on LJ, and in academic work; my computer is set to use a British dictionary and I'll only change to American if one of my professors or reviewers complains. And really, I don't see why you should consider it pretentious unless you sekkritly think British spellings are more 1337 than American ones... :P

Imagine fandom without those authors, without those worlds that take us in and make us see the sunsets and the spark of the moon on the river, make the characters step right off the page and whisper in our ears and tell us why they've done what they've done, why they love who they love.

Why doesn't she just come right out and say "HELLO I AM TALKING ABOUT MYSELF HERE PEOPLE."

I have found authors who believe in Story and who believe in maintaining the integrity of that Story and who work at telling that Story to the very best of their abilities.

4 out of 5 dentists say that capitalizing random words make things sound more profound!

Lady, you quit writing fanfic. You didn't quit "fandom." Fandom and fanfic writing are not interchangeable terms.

Good Lord, that ETA.

Apparently, it's okay that a good author might get hurt because they're 'more with it and together' than some of those who make an lj career out of garnering sympathy in the form of feedback from others by weeping in public when they don't get what they want. Silly me. But yeah, good to know. Bloody hell. There we go again: rewarding bad behaviour and punishing talent -- apparently, it's okay that one gets screwed so another can get kissed.

I've never seen a specialler snowflake.

it isn't fun when you realise that people are not here for the original material or the characters or the writing -- they're here for only the kinds of pairings/scenarios/kinks they want to read about.

Why, yes! How ungrateful to read only the stories you're interested in! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE HANGING ON HER EVERY WORD, PEOPLE! No matter how much it bores or squicks! And then you damn well better write her long loveletters in gratitude for deigning to share her Stories with the pathetic likes of you! Or else she will take them away FOREVER!

My eyes glazed over after the first few pages. Is she defending her position not to use lj, or just trying to get everyone else off lj as well? Fandom was just as bitchy and whiny when it was on Pitas, mailing lists and usenet before.

I feel old.
