He seems unaware of two things:

1. That fandom is not a hive mind and fanfiction is not collective. Each story takes place in its own uinque ficverse and is lauded or loathed on its own merits or failings.

2. 90% of everything is shit.

Also, it's been my experience that hen canon has covered an aspect of stroytelling, eg, fighting werewolves, fics in which fighting werewolves is central, but not episode-based (as though the ficthor imagined the story on her own) will be less well-recieved than fics which explore a new facet of storytelling.

THAT said, well, I hope I didn't sound too pretensious.
