Neener neener you selfish hoarding bastard!
They Might Be Giants, as some of you may know, are a low-key nerd-rock band. Songs they've done include "Birdhouse in Your Soul", Malcolm in the Middle theme "Boss of Me" and two songs immortalized in Tiny Toons, "Particle Man" and "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)".

Back in 1999, TMBG started playing a new song, "Thunderbird" at their live shows. It was well-received, but didn't appear on an album until 2004's The Spine. That version has a somewhat different arrangement from the live version and some fans were disappointed. However, in 2002 one well-known TMBG fan, TDK, was able to get his hands on a rare CD which included a demo recording of "Thunderbird" that more resembled the live version. Shortly after his big purchase, the two Johns of TMBG asked him not to share any of the recordings on that CD to anyone. So he hasn't. Some people in fandom hate him for it, since he's shared hard-to-find music before.

(Note: apparently TDK has a reputation of collecting rare and sundry TMBG memorabilia and has gone to well over a hundred shows. In TMBG fandom he's been known to brag about his collection and how much some if it has cost. Fandom opinion seems to be split between "He's a nice guy!" and "What a bigheaded bastard.")

Fast-forward to February 25th, 2007! So someone else was able to find a copy of the "Thunderbird" demo, and a video appears on youtube with the song... as well as a diatribe against TDK and his selfish, hoarding ways. Apparently this video was made to "put him in his place." It is then posted (hello troll!) to LJ's TMBG community.

Reactions are mixed.

And finally, TDK's response: bite me.

Smallish, and I doubt it'll get any bigger, but still amusing.

[edit: Here's a bit more information on the matter. It also contains a yousendit to the file in question! Props to poisonyoulove.]

They asked him not to, and he didn't. OK, perhaps he shouldn't have gone around talking about it, but still.

If I'd found myself in possession of a similar rarity and my BSOs asked me not to share the material, I'd like to think I wouldn't. Leaving any possibly legal issues aside, I just love 'em that much, you know?

Agreeance on all counts. My guess is that he started to talk about it and then got the request to not share it. Had the Johns of TMBG said something sooner, I'd guess he wouldn't have mentioned it.

Ah, TMBG...I remember listening to them when I was younger. The only really adequate way of describing them is that their songs are the most meaningful nonsense I've ever heard.

I remember meeting TDK at a few shows, and he used to do some really fair bootlegs-for-blanks trades, back before we had the empeethrees you whippersnappers seem to enjoy so much. He came across as an honest, stand-up tape trader, with a clear policy on what he was going to post and/or trade.

In TMBG fandom he's been known to brag about his collection and how much some if it has cost.

I think he once scored a copy of the 1985 flexi-disc demo on eBay. If he mentioned how much he paid for that, well, I bet a lot of people were interested -- that thing's practically mythical.

This thread in alt.music.tmbg sheds a little more light on things.

He didn't ask the band, he contacted someone in their management, who didn't have much choice but to say he shouldn't share it, surely there would have been legal issues. TMBG have been known to turn a blind eye to these things before, there's no reason to think they'd have cared, if he had just shared it.

Many obsessive fans are known to post their list of hard to find items, and some pictures of said items if they were feeling generous. Perhaps I'm just jaded from seeing old school anime fans barking at people to stay away from their precious collections.

And just to make it clear "Istanbul not Constantinople" is an old song, which has been covered by half the singers on the planet.

(Because I'm feeling old and cranky tonight. My dentist had never heard of Janis Joplin, having been born when she was already dead).

Wow, entitlement much? It's not like he took their stuff or something, he just refused to give them for free something that he paid a lot of money for. And he didn't even do that out of selfishness, but because the band asked him. What right do those brats have to complain?
