Can We Have Elf-Wank without LotR? Answer: Apparently.
In [info]girl_gamers, [info]project_jeni shares with the group her St. Patrick's Day/WoW tee-shirts, featuring the game's newest race, the Blood Elves, and the logo Kiss Me, I'm Elvish! Hey, I'm the biggest folkloristic morphology geek ever (as evidenced by the fact that I even know what the hell "folkloristic morphology" is), and while the shirts are not exactly folklore-friendly, I still want one.

Two comments in, [info]omnissiah appears, wondering what the hell this has to do with St. Patrick's Day. People gently try to explain the pun, but [info]omnissiah stubbornly refuses to yield:

I've never known of Elves being considered of Irish descent in any of the games I've played. Mainly because elves are of German descent and most games follow the Tolkien style of mythology, which still doesn't render them as Irish.

People try to move on, but [info]omnissiah continues to pop up with his/her authoritive knowledge of all things Irish/Elvish.

Slowing down now, but the wank is rich.

Honestly, if you were going to make this joke about any race in WoW, it ought to be the Dwarves. I know my dwarf has the cutest little Scottish accent you ever did hear, and while it isn't exactly the same as an irish accent, it's a lot closer than the blood elves' Valley Speak.

I wouldn't say that around any Scottish people. Really. ;) (Well, not my mother at any rate).

I would wear a shirt that says, "Kiss me, I'm Gnomish!" on it in binary. Mostly 'cause one of the punch card boxes in Gnomeregan says just that.

Geez, that's quite a show of crankypants. St.Patrick's Day is about being drunk all day and loving it, not pointless bitching about spelling the holiday right! Hey, if you can spell ANYTHING at the end of St.P's Day, you're ahead of the game!

Damn it, I'm part Pict! Acknowledge them!

Every year there's Paddy's day wank, and...why? What is it about my native holiday that inspires such lunacy? I'd have thought intoxication would diminish one's capacity to type at least.

(And incidentally, I'd say the Tuatha Dé Danann are fairly similar to our conception of Elves, but then...I'm hardly a scholar on this type of thing.)

From the post at girl_gamers:

"Actually, Elves are considered Faerie, and the earliest mention would be the Tuatha De Danaan of IRELAND.

And you are are confusing Germanic with German. Very big difference.

(Here courtesy of F_W)"

Actually, no. Elves and Fairies (whatever spelling you use) are different, seeing as how Elves are part of Germanic mythology, and the Fairies of Celtic mythology, but thank you for playing, person-who-does-not-read-the-FW-rules.

Maybe it's just cos I'm sick of getting "WOW COOL UR IRISH i'm .0005% Irish and I want to know EVERYTHING ABOUT THE PLACE so start typing rite now!!!" messages on MySpace/Facebook/everywhere. :(

Oh gods, I cannot help myself FORGIVE ME FOR WANKING IN-HOUSE, but I'm not seeing anything about "folkloristic morphology" in this wank, because that refers to *narrative structure* of folk stories; the wank here is about classification and terminology of folklore critters. They're somewhat different things, and since this wank is all about proper terminology, I felt obligated to point it out. AGH.
