KOOL-AID PARTY!
Thanks to a mousie on Wank Report. Lacking in virulence but with some enjoyable exchanges.
The game begins when NucMed makes a complaint post on the USA boards called "Getting Sloppy":
Monk is a fantastic show. I just hate that they have gotten so incredibly sloppy with this season ending show. I don't know who did their hospital research, but they should be fired. The most glaring error is the medical coat that Dr. Scott is wearing. Coats are an EXTREMELY revered part of the medical repetoire. There is even a ceremony when you graduate from Med School. You see, a med student wears a SHORT coat until graduation. On the day of graduation, someone who is already a physician gives a LONG coat to signify acceptance into the "franternity" of doctors. No doctor, ESP someone of Dr. Scott's reputation would be caught DEAD in a short coat!!!
The British Airline Pilots Association would like to point out that it takes a chap six years to become a fully qualified airline pilot, and not two. (phone ring) Yes, ah yes - yes. (puts phone down) My wife just reminded me that on a recent 'High Chapparal' Kathy Kirby was singing glibly about 'Fly me to the Stars' when of course there are no scheduled flights of this kind, or even chartered, available to the general public at the present moment, although of course, when they are BALPA will be in the vanguard.

The first response from TheOddJen seems like there might be a promising flame war: What's your point? Nobody cares.

Og_of_the_Jungle: Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Unfortunately, all remains rather cordial. Those of you who have not seen the show may benefit from TheOddJen's summary: Seriously though, the show ISN'T about detail. It's about a man named Adrian Monk who has to deal with stuff, and we're all "haha" because he gets into uncomfortable situations and sometimes dangerous ones. For the dangerous ones, we shout, "Oh no, Mr. Monk!"

So I'm clicking "next page" and feeling disappointed that it doesn't seem FW-worthy, but tensions are apparently high on the board and some people are out on a crusade to stop the Cult of Mean the NEGATIVE MONKAHOLICS (helpfully color coded) from taking over the board!

kees_lady: IMHO this whole forum has become the subject of negativity - it seems the only cast members who don't come under negativity are Adrian and Leland. Everything else, from the writing of the scripts, the production staff, the inconsistancies of the scripts, the locations where episodes are shot, the sentimentality, Randy's theories, Kevin as a neighbor, the mysteries, et cetera have been picked apart in one way or another.

At first there's lots of agreement and back patting of kees_lady:
monkchick693: Why can't we ALL just stop criticizing the show? We're all on this board because we all like monk. I understand that not everyone feels the same way about all the episodes. But, we still shouldn't criticize it. And if we all have a probelem with new people's criticism (no offense!) Nobody's making us come to their board so we should just let it be.

However extex2 is not about to stand for this:
Concerns you?
Why does it concern you?
We do have a monitor and surprise it's not you and it's not KEES
If she is tired of new people bashing the show perhaps you should be just as tolerant of her views of the bashers as you are of as the bashees...
Sorry I missed the kool aid party. You can join Elfa and sing KumBaya all night long but a troll by any other name is still a troll...
The internet has sucked all the joy out of watching the show.
Instead of bringing people togther,it allows weirdos to get their jollies from running something down that is simply meant to bring joy.
I suppose you support kicking puppies and pulling the wings of butterflies too.
IT"S A SHOW!!!!!!!! NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. GEEZ!

"However, I would just like to add a complaint about shows that have too many complaints in them as they get very tedious for the average viewer." "I'd like to complain about people who hold things up by complaining about people complaining. It's about time something was done about it." (sixteen ton weight falls)

kees_lady: If there are any posters on this board who think they own it or are bullies, it would be you and you could probably include me. YOU would be uno numero as you were here first and I've seen how untolerant and mean you can be. I'm just an 'also ran' compared to you for between the time you joined and the time I joined there have been several posters whose intolerance and downright nastiness have so humiliated posters they have left the board rather than continue to be abused by the original 'billy goat gruffs.'

A poster named Raven makes a brief "GOODBYE CRUEL INTERNETS" but comes back to much (((hugs))).

The thread continues and is still being posted to, but I'm just hoping for a Kool-Aid party.

You know... I am not a medical doctor, nor do I play one on TV. I do sometimes play one in real-life, but that's between me and my man-toy, Hans. I don't know about any arcane medical school rituals. I do, however, own several lab coats. I started kind of early: I bought my first two when I was 14, and although one didn't survive O-chem, I have since acquired two more. All of them are long. I've worked in labs for eight years now, and I've only ever seen a handful of short coats; most people wear long ones.

Yeah, but that's lab coats, not clinical coats. Being a med student myself, I have to say that it's quite true that while all of us wear white "coats" that are really more jacket-length, residents and attendings most certainly wear longer ones, and unquestionably would never wear one of ours, given how hard they worked to earn their status as MDs. It's not a stratification you're likely to run into anywhere except a teaching hospital, as there aren't any students at other hospitals/clinics/etc. But even in other hospitals, I've never ever seen an MD in anything but a long white coat.

FWIW, though, my father, who got his MD in India, was rather boggled by the coat hierarchy here in the US. And he doesn't even bother with a white coat at all, so. *shrugs*

Monk wank! Awww, it's adorable! *pets the wank*

I don't really mix in there, but Monk is one of the least-wanky fandoms I've ever seen. The show is so affectionate to all its chars it's hard to favor one over the other. And the show's more or less committed itself to a "no canon 'ships" policy, which cuts down on an awful lot of wank.

Nevermind the wanking over it, they're still making Monk? I thought it was one of those defunct 90s shows that the BBC buys to fill in the Saturday schedule when the rugby isn't on and they haven't managed to get the football?

I know one exception (I guess that means he proves the rule?) of a well-established physician (fully accredited, has been practicing for decades and is probably in his late 60s or early 70s). At the time, he was working at a teaching hospital, Hasbro Children's Hospital, affiliated with Brown University. He always wore a short coat and did so intentionally to show that he always had something to learn.

I always liked him for that attitude.

Wait. He's wanking about the accuracy of the length of the lab coat on a show in which the main character's mental illness in no way, shape, or form resembles the actual mental illness? A show where the writers seem more than happy not to research *anything*, no matter how central it is to the story line?
