A friend brought this very special American Girl wank to my attention, and thought it was worth sharing. The following is her write-up:

Did you ever have a favorite toy that someone told you just wasn't good enough if it wasn't a real 'insert brand name here' toy? Oneofthosehorriblemoms is on a *crusade* to let everyone know that American Girl Place in NYC allows its stylists (yes, stylists for doll hair...comedy gold in and of itself I'm sure) to inform poor, underpriveleged girls that their Target brand dollies aren't real and not worth loving.

She starts with a scathing, detailed rendition of her lovely daughter "Etta's" treatment at American Girl Place by both a stylist and several upperclass women waiting for their pampered darlings. Oneofthosehorriblemoms claims not to have been there, but her exact quotes and descriptions are awfully well remembered by a six year old.

Commenters flock to the support of the brave, kind hearted Etta and her selfless mother, offering to never buy another piece of American Girl merchandise and to dispose of the items their children already owned. Oneofthosehorriblemoms must have felt vindicated with the interwebz outpouring of support...until the dissenters arrived. 'Why hasn't American Girl corporate heard of this incident?", they inquired, but our stalwart OP refused to answer beyond deleting 'inappropriate' comments.

Hm...so real or well thought out pity plea on "teh internetz"? We'll give you a free dolly hairstyle for the answer!

People pay money to have a doll's hair styled? I thought being able to do it yourself was one of the points of having a doll with styleable hair.

Or at least, for me it was.

I've been dealing with this since it first showed up on the boards I frequent. Instead of posting the long list of holes I have found in the story, I'll leave you with this:

http://oneofthosehorriblemoms.blogspot.com/2006/12/is-for-awful.html

Another entry on this woman's blog. Be sure to notice that she describes her daughter as being sensitive and easy to upset, says she's happy whenever she doesn't have to take this kid anywhere with her, and more to the point, says the kid has gone to AG Place before. This isn't even a situation where a kid went to AG Place for the first time and thus knew nothing of how they operated!

The SA forums got a hold of this a few days ago. They weren't around for the, "This might not be entirely true" portion of the wank, so mostly it's a load of goons shaking their emoticon fists at American Girl.

There's a fun bonus on the last page in the form of a girl who used to work as a stylist there and some of the weird policies the company had in place.

Methinks: the stylist didn't want to be responsible for doll hair that has an unknown provenance (and therefore could possibly be ruined by her attentions) and perhaps did not phrase this well to the child (or perhaps she did -- once they're upset, some kids don't listen to reason); mom hears the story second-hand and overreacts. And reacts. And reeeeeacts.

In some ways, mom's self-righteous attitude annoys me as much as the snobby trophy wives she complains about.

Hm..

This was featured on The Consumerist just last week.

I can't believe little girls are being allowed to spend that much money on dolls. Good thing Barbie was a short phase for me. Caboodles and Polly Pockets (the early versions, not the "on crack" versions they have now) were cool.

True fact: The woman plays up being poor and how her daughter wears hand-me-down clothes, yet she lives in a brownstone in Brooklyn and sent the same daughter to an elite drama camp over the summer.

Also, she has a DVD player in her van. They went on a trip to Ireland with two of the children for a wedding, then decided to bed-and-breakfast hop for another week. She went to a spa for a week(end?) without the kids.

And even better, there's several posts where she is obsessed with name brand things, laments how boring it is to be a mother, how if she doesn't feel like moving or listening to her kids, she just tells them they have to wait for their dad to come home. She regularly fails to include specifics regarding dates, so that in one post in January, she writes as though it is summer and she has 3 children (one able to walk), and in the next post, she's writing that she only has two and one is on the way.

This is not someone trustworthy. Yet hundreds of comments in that post (the only post with more than ten, I reckon) act as though the story is gospel. Yeah, right.

When I was a kid, my Mom sewed the hair of all our Shimmer dolls into unique and elaborate fantasy hairstyles. We were mad poor so she used Dad's fishing line and various cheap plastic beads from her art box to do the job.

Nearly 20 years later, these same dolls live on my collection shelf and their hair is still absolutely perfect. I'm glad I have this beautiful collection to remember Mom by.

I guess what I mean to say is, "Damn kids and their toy salons! Why, when I was a small and effeminate boy...." blah blah blah.

So, these days little girls go to professional stylists to have them coiffure their dolls's hair?

...

When I was a little girl, I used to play with my dolls (and with videogames, and hide-and-seek, and we-are-ninjas, and we-are-indians-and-cowboys, and catch-me-if-you-can, and let's-climb-a-tree, and...). Whatever happened to "fun"?

The comments made me kinda nauseous, especially the insults tossed at the people who were like "Uh...are you sure it went exactly like that?" or the ones who suggest that the adults are being awfully immature for parents (I liked the one that said, in more polite terms "Throwing away your kids' dolls and books they already have to make a point? First of all, AG dolls are designed for girls 8 and up. That's why they're expensive -- because they're really well made. I don't care how rich I was, there's no way I'd let a 6-year-old have an AG doll. I want to buy one for my goddaughter, but at 5, I still think she's way too young. (Plus, I've seen firsthand how she treats her dolls. I love her to bits, but there's no way I'd give her a $100 doll.)

Second, this story seems at least 90% bullshit. Like lots of people have said before, there's probably a company policy that doesn't allow non-AG dolls to be worked on because the store may not have spare parts in case the doll is damaged in the styling process. How can a 6-year-old's recount of the incident, filtered through her obviously biased mother ("My child never lies!" Yeah, right) be seen as fact? Oh yeah, I guess it's because morons rule the internet, just like in the real world.
