Assuming DOOM (TM) has not descended on the forums in the wake of a god awful prank by the mods, hopefully this gets posted. *crosses fingers*

Anyway,  ladies and gentlemen, I'd like for you to meet SKaze. SKaze asks  members at animenation[info] a rather heartfelt question:

"How do your feelings towards anime characters of the other sex compare with your feelings towards real people?"

 [info]

You're probably assuming that this soul-stirring question was brought on by the classic lament: "Why can't real boobies jiggle like anime boobies?"

No, no,  SKaze deserves more credit than that. He has rejected the love of all real women not only because the lack of 2D jiggle, but also because real women tend to be unattractive and flawed. And the pretty girls? Egotistical and shallow. Real women, by SKaze's standards, just don't measure up to those darling dolls in the cartoons. I mean, they're so perfect, it's almost like someone thought them up.

And yes, naturally, people weigh in on this "unique" perspective:

Dark_Shiki thinks poor SKaze is confused, and just hasn't met that special girl yet. SKaze, disagrees:

This is a line i hear rather often. my reply is, well, i have been looking for about 11-12 years now. not full-time of course - i have a lot of other things i have/like to do - but enough to make me sick of clubs, parties, and going to uninteresting humanitarian science lectures (where pretty intellectual-type chick density is highest).

regrettably, the tendency has been rather downhill - while in the early years when i was 18-20 it was more often that i found someone at least a bit interesting, with time there've been fewer and fewer occasions like that. i'm just tired of superficialness. just put yourself in my shoes - someone with a graduate degree in a tech science - and ask yourself: how many interesting, beautiful women do you know?

*resists urge to roll eyes to another continent*

Things don't take a turn for the wanky until Leader Desslock shows up to rain on SKaze's parade:

I hate to break it to you, Sparky: yep, it sure is. Your perceptions are being colored by your .... detachment from reality? I can't think of any other way to word this. Real human women are failing to meet up with your fictional ideals. That's not a flaw of real women; it's why real women are REAL.

And from there it's basically the members of the board attempting to bounce logic and "get thee real boobies!" remarks off of SKaze's ego.

Now ladies (and gay men), I know some of the comments made may be particularly offensive...when you aren't laughing yourself in and out of a coma. As an proud owner of real boobies, I think it's a blessing that no woman will ever have to worry about sitting through dinner with this guy, at least before excusing herself to the bathroom and attempting a daring escape through the restaurant's ventilation system.

ETA: Credit for finding this goes to a brave mousie over at wank report.

ETA II: Copy and pasting needs some work...

Us poor women, what with our good personalities and all! It's so HARD in today's world to be interesting, kind, and funny. I suppose we've all got our crosses to bear, but sometimes I really wish that I could be the vapid, disproportionate yes-girl that this person apparently wants. Woe I say. Woe.

I do so love the image of scores of women crawling through restaurant airducts to get away from the OP. You know, there was an old urban legend about a crasher dying in the vents trying to get into Studio 54? That's what it reminds me of. Only instead of trying to get into OP's club, they're dying to get out.

What's funny is I've always used his logic to explain how I can not be attracted to real people but can still fangirl over fictional characters with stalker crush type gusto. I don't actually believe it, I just use that for people who think that means I am actually romantically attracted to 2D cartoon drawings instead. Sigh.

The most serious one is that after 10 years of constant exposure to flawless anime beauty, most women are simply not that attractive visually.

Not all of us can have our hair swirl attractively on a still day.

Another one is that, among the few attractive ones, nearly all have been uninteresting for me as personalities in the longer term. Typically, they were rather shallow, in some cases also vain and egoistic.

Cartoons: the highest concentration in the world of well-developed, selfless, and modest people.

This is not a prejudice, rather an impartial observation based on my experience (while there are surely people who know more beautiful women than me, during my life I have probably talked to a few hundred which is enough for a solid statistical sample).

This is where we remind you that your degree is in math, and not psychology. A large sample does not a survey make.

Er, sorry. /end obvious

First of all, why is he pitying these numerous women with good personalities? Because they'll never experience the power of his love? I know I'd be in tears.

Second of all, maybe if he's really lucky he can find a girl with a good personality who would wear one of these for him. Problem solved (sorta)!

Way too long, but...
(Anonymous)

...has anyone in that thread considered yet the fact that with anime characters, you never have to see their weirder and/or more eccentric/disgusting habits? You know, the things they do once they're safe at home and away from the school/club house/main background area of the story's focus? You never see the way they brush their teeth or leave the toilet seat up or walk around naked on the weekends with the blinds up. Very rarely do they trip over their own words or make complete asses out of themselves, or just have bad days where they're selfish and stubborn and lash out at others for no particular reason. Even in the best of shows, an audience rarely sees the characters except for in the context of the story, when they're doing things that are directly or indirectly relevant to the plot. (Short omakes don't really count.) This doesn't mean that good, solid characterization can't exist, but there's an awful lot of blank space the day where we DON'T know what the characters are saying/doing/feeling/etc. That's one of the reasons fanfiction is so popular.

In short, I don't think that what this guy is feeling is "love" for his anime girls. It's a crush. The same kind of "heart-racing, butterflies-in-the-stomach, loving-every-second-you-have-with-them" feeling (his descriptions) that you get whenever you first meet someone you feel attracted too. This is usually especially true when you only GET to see certain aspects of your crush's behavior (the good ones), and even then only for restricted periods of time (say third period gym--or the 20 minutes of an anime episode). The OP even states that the intensity of his emotions falls off after awhile, another common symptom of a crush.

The problem with this is that in the real world, if you really are serious about this person, eventually you *will* begin to spend more time with them, learn more about their personalities and faults, and eventually that happy sparkly crushing glow begins to fade (sometimes totally, and sometimes simply into "real" love). With anime characters you never get to (or is it have to?) reach that point.

And those are my thoughts on yaoi.

*starts to mop up after self*

Hey, if he wants to remove himself from the dating/genetic pool, I don't think there are too many women who will shed a single glistening tear about it.

"This thread is legendary and the OP is gonna become an hero..."

That guy seriously killed me.
And the thing about the RP Ecchi games and that being a little bit less one-sided? Win!!

graduate degree in a tech science

Must be computer science. All the engineers I know have real relationships.

How do your feelings towards anime characters of the other sex compare with your feelings towards real people?

Uh, generally people don't even bother to compare the two.

after 10 years of constant exposure to flawless anime beauty, most women are simply not that attractive visually

Reality check on aisle 3!

One of the quotes you copy-pasted got horfed. I had to go find it out of the original wank to make sense of it:

Doesn't cast him in a much better light, but at least now I know he's just shallow, not incoherent.
