More Webcomic Wank!
Okay, so by now it's apperant I'm something of a webcomic junkie. That being said, I found this little wank about PvP's Scott Kurtz and it's pretty funny.

Entire thread can be found here and it's still going!

Basically the OP drasticcomics says that digital inking is the same as regular inking and calling out Scott Kurtz for making it seem more complicated then it actually was. And he calls for Scott to "act like the 36 year old you are, instead of the attention grabbing 12 year old with a new toy you constantly come off as."

Some people agree with him in his rant and others call him out for being something of an ass himself. Some just nicely say to back off:

Batdan: Dude, people were asking him how he did it, and he answered their questions. Most people don't know how comics are made, just like most people don't know the intracacies of making our favorite tv shows. Lay off Scott for educating his fanboys.

Others are a bit more energetic in their response.

Toonhound: Wow. You're really acting like a baby, Dude.

saikou_dani: Is it Desperate Housewives that hits your masculinity, or the fact that you sob through Grey's Anatomy? :P

anonymous: Frankly your art sucks ass. Maybe you should try picking up a pencil and sketching it out first before you throw your acidic diatribes out to a world who could give a fuck less about how little you love PVP or anyone else you might find to be a threat to your precious "medium".

He replies of course as do others on his behalf.

smashingstars: You post an opinion about Kurtz' tutorial and he sends his little fans to your LiveJournal to anonymously flame you. Typical.

drasticcomics: Seriously Scott, if I had to pin words to the emotions you spring up in me, it would be annoyance and irritation. Don DeLilo once wrote "talent is more erotic when its wasted" he is so mistaken.

In all earnesty and to be fair to the OP the real wankers are the people who are telling him to STFU about Scott. There are more funny comments in the thread and it's still being added to so I'm sure there is some more to come.

And Kurtz got so cranky about being told off by some teensy little webcomic artist he had to come all the way across the internet and chew on them. No dissing too small. Precious! My favorite part:

"I think you're out of line, Drastic." I can hear the ominous voice. Also, line? Get it? Inking, line? OMG FUNNEH SCOTT

It's not the first time. Penny Arcade has made fun of him on more than one occasion because of his antics. And it's always hysterical.

Recently I've done a little research/asking around about how one goes about promoting one's webcomic. I saw a lot of suggestions that I thought were bad ideas, but even so "make an angry, frothing rant about someone who draws a much more popular webcomic" was nowhere to be seen. And clearly it works!

Well, depending on your definition of "works" I guess.

There is no such thing as a bad site hit. Webcomics are abuse whores that way.

So--since I've got a webcomic I need to pimp too...what popular strip needs a good ranting?

Maybe I should try that! I can be famous on the interwebs! ... though on second thought, maybe I should learn to draw before gaining notoriety for my webcomic.

I'm doomed then. I'm terrible when it comes to bashing comics and things - just like I'm terrible at riding my artist to get something done or tell me you want to not do it at all so I can go hunt down another artist plz.

Alas!

I can't comment on the video, being at work and not being able to see it and all, but ... while it is possible that it doesn't take any more inherent talent, digital inking IS sort of different from inking on paper. In the way sculpting with clay is different from sculpting with, say, play-doh. Different medium, and all that. Isn't this sort of like saying to oil painters, "Oh, suck it up and use acrylics"?

digital inking IS sort of different from inking on paper.

Wordy Mc Word.

As someone who knows several comics creators (the paper kind boys and girls), and of those who are "switch hitters", not a single damn one them ever says working on one is exactly the same as the other. In fact, when working predominately with one of them for an extended period of time, they find they are "rusty" when it comes to switching back.

I just watched the video and this is a whole lot of stink over nothing. The only comment made was that in digital inking, you can erase your mistakes and not have to worry about smudging.

Such is the nature of wank!

This is just me, but the "you spring up in me" phrase really doesn't seem to fit the wording of the rest of the sentence. "Create" or "cause" probably would have been much better than "spring up", I think. Or just completely reword the entire thing. Oh, and the fact that "words" is plural, so it should really say "they would be", not "it would be".

...I think it's time I went back to bed and slept off the pain meds.

God damn it. I try and I try but no matter how offensive my blog rants are, I can't seem to get a rise out of anyone. The worst I've ever been called (to my knowledge) was "that dingbat who draws Kagerou..." and that was coming from a furry!

And now you're telling me what's really been missing all this time was a tendency to attack the competition?

Well fine then. I'll build the biggest fieriest flaming wall of angry words you've ever seen! I'll just need someone vastly more successful in the field who's easy to make fun of. Luckily, I have one on tap already, so here goes:

It's the easiest thing in the world to spout off something hostile online and get attention from it, like Kurtz does.
